  • This study was carried out to investiagate the residual stress caused by the mismatch of thermal expansion and the bond failure resistance of alloy-porcelain specimens. The thermal expansions of alloys and porcelains were measured by using a straight push-rod dilatometer. Porcelain glass transition temperatures, thermal expansion coefficients, and thermal compatibility indices were derived from length-versus-temperature curves. Strain gauges were used to experimentally determine the Young's moduli of porcelains, the residual stresses of porcelain surface, and tensile bond strengths of the specimens of simulated porcelain metal crown. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The coefficients of thermal expansion for alloys were the minimum of $13.53\mu/^{\circ}C$ and the maximum of $20.11\mu/^{\circ}C$ in the range of $100\sim600^{\circ}C$ and those for porcelains were the minimum of $7.72\mu/^{\circ}C$ and the maximum of $31.24\mu/^{\circ}C$ in the range of $100\sim500^{\circ}C$. 2. The glass transition temperature of porcelains exhibited the same value without my relation to the healing rate, and the thermal disharmony of porcelain and alloy was more affected by porcelains than by the alloys. 3. The Young's moduli of body porcelains were larger than those of opaque porcelains(P<0.01) 4. It seemed that the residual stresses of porcelain surfaces in the porcelainalloy systems were more affected by porcelains than by alleys. 5. The bond strengths of the procelain-base metal alloy systems were larger than those of the porcelain-precious metal alloy systems. The fracture strengths of porcelain surfaces showed significant difference between porcelains (P<0.05).

  • The plane bending corrosiion fatigue test for the welded metal parats was performed in the air and in the natural sea water with and without applying cathodic protection. The specimens tested were the weld of SM41 steel plates, SM58 steel plates and of SM41 to SM58, which were all prepared by submerged arc welding. The main results obtained from the experiment are summarized as follows: (1) In case with SM41 and SM58 steel plates, lower value of impact strength, higher value of hardness and more noble electrode potential were observed in the welded metal part than in the HAZ and base metal. Also the lowest hardness zone in the HAZ was observed with SM58 which was not found with SM41. In case with weld specimen of SM41 to SM58, the impact strength and the electrode potential of the welded metal part showed again the lowest and most noble value but the hardness value was located between those of SM41 and SM58 base metal. (2) In the fatigue test, the specimens tested in the air and under the cathodic protection were both cracked in a purely mechanical mode, but the specimens tested without cathodic protection were cracked by the combination of mechanical fracture and electro-chemical corrosion. (3) The corrosion fatigue limit of the welded metal parts of the specimen was increased by the cathodic protection. As the protection potential was varied down to -800 mV vs. SCE the fatigue limit was increased to the value tested in the air, and the maximum fatigue limit appeared at the -1, 000 - -1, 200 mV vs. SCE. However, as the protection potential was further decreased below -1, 200 mV vs.SCE, the fatigue limit of weld of SM58 and of SM41-SM58 joining was decreased but the limit was almost constant in the case of weld of SM41. (4) It is suggested that when designing steel ship the corrosion fatigue limit of welded metal parts should be stressed as a designing strength of the structure of steel ship in addition to the conventional basis considering simply tensile strength of steel and safety factor.

  • The failure of reactor internals may have a significant effect on the safe operation and shutdown of a reactor. Various agings related to neutron irradiation occur or can potentially occur in the reactor internals owing to high neutron irradiation levels. Austenitic stainless steel, one of the principal materials constituting the reactor internals, shows different mechanical material behaviors such as tensile/creep properties and fracture toughness with neutron irradiation levels. This variation should be considered when the structural integrity of the reactor internals against agings during the design lifetime or continued operation period is evaluated. In this study, user subroutine programs considering the variation of mechanical material behaviors with neutron irradiation levels were developed. The programs were validated by testing them for various conditions.

  • Elastomeric nanocomposites were prepared by employing zinc dimethacrylate into an acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, and their network structures, mechanical properties, and fracture morphologies were investigated according to the adding methods and contents of zinc dimethacrylate. The total crosslink density increased with increasing the zinc dimethacrylate level, due to increased ionic bonds. Both the tensile strength and tear strength increased with increasing zinc dimethacrylate loadings, and then decreased after reaching a maximum value. It was found that the tear strength and crack resistance were greatly affected by the mixing method of zinc dimethacrylate. The in-situ nanocomposites, where zinc dimethacrylate particles were formed by the reaction of zinc oxide and methacrylic acid, showed much improved tear strength and crack resistance compared to those of the nanocomposites based on the direct mixing of zinc dimetacrylate powders. This was because of the finer zinc dimethacrylate particles and improved dispersion of the in-situ nanocomposites.

  • Recently, polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. Aging test to estimate life property of polymer insulator is executed through several international standard such as IEC 61109 and CEA tracking wheel test, but is not getting clear conclusion yet. There are two methods in the diagnosis method of polymer insulator such as off-line and on-line. The diagnosis methods in off-line are external condition analysis by the eye, contaminant analysis on surface, surface analysis, pollution withstand voltage test, power frequency flashover voltage test, lightning impulse flashover test, tensile fracture load test and flexural load test. Polymer material is also investigated it's tracking resistance by adding surface active agent in IEC 587. In this paper, the tracking performance of polymer insulator with salt solution which is added surface active agent. The diagnosis of insulator sample has been analyzed by leakage current and visual examination, STRI guide and thermal image camera.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate sheets, which are lightweight with high strength, are commonly used to reinforce concrete structures. The bonding strength is vital in structural design. Therefore, experiments and analytical studies with differing variables (concrete compressive strength and tensile strength, the elastic modulus of concrete and FRP, thickness of concrete and FRP, width of concrete and FRP, bond length, effective bond length, fracture energy, maximum bond stress, maximum slip) have been conducted to obtain an accurate numerical model of the bond strength between an FRP sheet and concrete. Although many models have been proposed, no validated model has emerged that could be used easily in practice. Therefore, this study analyzed the parameters that influence the bond strength that were used in 23 of the proposed models (Khalifa model, Iso model, Maeda model, Chen model, etc.) and compared them to the test results of 188 specimens via the numerical results of each model. As a result, an easy-to-use practical model with a simple and high degree of expression was proposed based on the Iso model combined with the effective bond length model that was proposed by Holzenkӓmpfer.

  • Generally, high-temperature, high-pressure, high-priced sintering equipment is used for diamond sintering, and conductivity is a problem for improving the surface modification of the sintered body. In this study, to improve the efficiency of diamond sintering, we identified a new process and material that can be sintered at low temperature, and attempted to develop a composite thin film that can be discharged by doping boron gas to improve the surface modification of the sintered body. Sintered bodies were sintered by mixing Si and two diamonds in different particle sizes based on CIP molding and HIP molding. In CVD deposition, CVD was performed using WC-Co cemented carbide using CH4 and H2 gas, and the specimen was made conductive using boron gas. According to the experimental results of the sintered body, as the Si content is increased, the Vickers hardness decreases drastically, and the values of tensile strength, Young's modulus and fracture toughness greatly increase. Conductive CVD deposited diamond was boron deposited and discharged. As the amount of boron added increased, the strength of diamond peaks decreased and crystallinity improved. In addition, considering the release processability, tool life and adhesion of the deposition surface according to the amount of boron added, the appropriate amount of boron can be confirmed. Therefore, by solving the method of low temperature sintering and conductivity problem, the possibility of solving the existing sintering and deposition problem is presented.

  • The results of an experimental and analytical study of composite pressure hull on buckling pressure are presented for LRN 300. Composite tensile test was done to know the composite material properties applied FE analysis for URN composite. We predicted the buckling and post buckling analysis of composite laminated cylindrical panels under external compression by using ABAQUS /Standard[Ver 6.4]. To obtain nonlinear static equilibrium solutions for unstable problems, where the load-displacement response can exhibit the type of nonlinear buckling behavior, during periods of the response, the load and/or the displacement may decrease as the solution evolves, used the modified Riks method. The modified Riks method is an algorithm that allows effective solution of such cases [7]. Experiments were conducted to verify the validation of present analysis for cross-ply laminated shells. The shells considered in the study have two different lamination patterns, $[{\pm}45/0/90]_{18s\;and}\;[/0/90]_{18s}$. Cylindrical panel of experiment and analysis have the radius of 200mm, length of 210mm and 60 degree of cutting angle. The critical load from experiment is $69\%$ of that of numerical analysis, because the fracture of matrix was generated before buckling. So URN 300 is not proper to use at the condition under high external pressue.

  • The first step in improving our understanding of uncertainties suclt as rock mass strength parameters and deformation modulus in rock masses around high-level radioactive waste disposal repositories, for improved safety, is to study the process of crack development in intact rock. Therefore, in this study, the fracture process and crack development were examined in samples of KURT granite taken from the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT), based on acoustic emission (AE) and moment tensor analysis. The results show that crack initiation, coalescence, and unstable crack occurred at rock uniaxial compressive strengths of 0.45, 0.73, and 0.84, respectively. In addition, moment tensor analysis indicated that during the early stage of loading, tensile cracks were predominant. With increasing applied stress, the number of shear cracks gradually increased. When the applied stress exceeded the stress level required for crack damage, unstable shear cracks which directly result in failure of the rock were generated along the failure plane.

  • Researches on strengthening and rehabilitation methods are being widely conducted due to the deterioration of existing concrete structures. Use of externally bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) strips for the rehabilitation is a cost-effective and time-saving method. Generally, the CFRP layout for the shear strengthening was a uni-directional layout. Many researches have focused on the variables of the uni-directional CFRP layout such as the amount of material, angle, and spacing. Pilot tests indicated that the effective confinement of the concrete member can be provided with the bi-directional CFRP layout than the uni-directional layout. Therefore, the test was carried out after the uni- and bi-directional strengthening work using the same amount of CFRP material. CFRP anchors were installed to prevent unexpected premature CFRP delamination failure before reaching CFRP fracture strain. The effectiveness of the CFRP anchor and bi-directional CFRP layout for shear strengthening was verified based on the principal tensile strain contours.
