Unsaturated soil mechanics has been often used to find out a cause of failure (tensile failure) of retaining walls and hill slopes containing sandy soils. Checking shear strength is a popular method by considering suction stress developed form pore water menisci among the grains and saturated pockets of pore water under negative pressure. Linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is generally adopted as a failure criterion. However, depending on relative density, stress history, and the magnitude of stress, the failure behavior of sand may not follow linear M-C frictional behavior. For stress in the large compressive ranges, say from tens to hundreds of kPa, the linear M-C criterion is an adequate representation for the shear strength behavior of sand. However, less than tens of kPa, the M-C criterion often can not be accurately represented. Depending on failure criterion, the uniaxial tensile strength is different over 100% relative error. For sand behavior under small compression regimes, therefore, such as under low or zero gravity, or under undergoing tensile failure in the crest area of hill slopes or behind retaining walls, it is important to consider the non-linear behavior.
This paper considers the tensile strength of concrete samples in direct, CTT, modified tension, splitting and ring tests using both of the experimental tests and numerical simulation (particle flow code 2D). It determined that which one of indirect tensile strength is close to direct tensile strength. Initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models in four introduced tests was also cross checked with the results from experimental tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed and failure patterns were watched to be reasonable in accordance with experimental results. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Tensile strength of concrete in direct test was less than other tests results. Tensile strength resulted from modified tension test was close to direct test results. So modified tension test can be a proper test for determination of tensile strength of concrete in absence of direct test. Other advantages shown by modified tension tests are: (1) sample preparation is easy and (2) the use of a simple conventional compression press controlled by displacement compared with complicate device in other tests.
The creep characteristics of concrete under tensile stress has been usually assumed to have the same characteristics as that under compressive stress in the time-dependent analysis of concrete structures. However, it appears from the recent experimental studies that tensile creep behavior is much different from compressive one. In particular, high sustaining tensile stress may cause time-dependent cracking and thus lead to tensile failure. It is, therefore, necessary to model the tensile creep behavior accurately for realistic time-dependent analysis of concrete structures. The present paper to have been focused to suggested more realistic model for the tensile creep behavior of concrete. The models are compared with tensile creep test data available in the literature. The proposed model may allow more refined analysis of concrete structures under time-dependent loading.

Because of a complicated behavior of fatigue in mechanical structures, the analysis of fatigue is in need of much researches on life prediction. A method is developed for the dynamic tensile strength analysis by simple tensile test, which is for the failure life prediction by lethargy coefficient of various materials. Then it is programed to analyze the failure life prediction of mechanical system by virtue of fracture. Thus the dynamic tensile strength analysis is performed to evaluate life parameters as a numerical example, using the developed method.
The microstructure and fractography of the friction welded joint of Al to Cu have been investigated in order to understand the formation of intermetallic compounds and their effects on the failure in tensile test of the joint. The variation of welding pressure did not affect significantly the tensile strength of joint. However, the tensile strength of joint decreaed as welding time increased. The thickness of reaction layers of welded joints was several micro-meters and mainly composed of intermetallic compounds of $CuAl_2$, $Cu_9Al_4$ and Al+$CuAl_2$. The thickness of $CuAl_2$, $Cu_9Al_4$ was increased with welding time. However, $CuAl_2$ was gradually changed to $Cu_9Al_4$ which caused the decrease of tensile strength . Even though the morphology of fractured surfaces depended upon the welding time, the failure occurred along $CuAl_2$ intermetallic compound itself or between $CuAl_2$ and $Cu_9Al_4$ in most cases.

There are various test methods for evaluating the reflective cracking resistance of asphalt concrete pavement. Repeated direct tensile test is cheap and simple compared to the other traditional experimental methods. Determination of failure criteria is needed to apply a repeated direct tensile test. Various methods were used to determine the number of failure of repeated direct tensile test. The number of failure was defined as the time to reach 10% of the initial load, this method can be satisfied with specified tolerance of 10%. When the thickness of specimen is increased to 50 mm from 30 mm, the failure number is increased by 13.6 times. Thus, this result shows that the thickness of pavement is a big influence on the reflective cracking resistance. Reflective cracking resistance of asphalt concrete is decreased according to the increase in opening displacement. The repeated direct tensile test can be used as a reflective cracking resistance factor in pavement design, because it can evaluate the reflective cracking resistance according to the pavement thickness, opening displacement, material properties etc.

This paper presents an experimental study on flexural behavior of structural member enlarged with epoxy mortar system. The main test variable is flexural tensile strength. A series of 4 test beams was tested to shoe the corresponding effect of each variables on maximum load capacity, load-deflection and moment-curvature relationship, interface behavior and failure mode. The results show that the flexural tensile strength of retrofitted materials have no relation load-deflection, but to load-strain, and failure mode.
Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests with an aid of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. A polymeric maleic anhydride coupling agent and a monomeric amino-silane coupling agent were used via the electrodeposition (ED) and the dipping applications, respectively. Both coupling agents exhibited significant improvements in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) compared to the untreated case under tensile and compressive tests. The typical microfailure modes including fiber break of cone-shape, matrix cracking, and partial interlayer failure were observed during tensile test, whereas the diagonal slippage in fiber ends was observed under compressive test. For both loading types, fiber breaks occurred around just before and after yielding point. In both the untreated and treated cases AE amplitudes were separately distributed for the tensile testing, whereas they were closely distributed for the compressive tests. It is because of the difference in failure energies of carbon fiber between tensile and compressive loading. The maximum AE voltage for the waveform of carbon or basalt fiber breakages under tensile tests exhibited much larger than those under compressive tests, which can provide the difference in the failure energy of the individual failure processes.
This study aims to characterize the dynamic tensile strength of unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites. Two different carbon/epoxy composite systems, the unidirectional T700S/2500 and TR50S/modified epoxy, are tested at the static condition and the strain rate of $100\;s^{-1}$. A high-strain-rate test was performed using a tension-type split Hopkinson bar technique with a specific fixture for specimen. The experimental results demonstrated that both tensile strength increase with strain rate, while the fracture behaviors are quite different. By the use of the rosette analysis and the strain transformation equations, the strain rate effects of material principal directions on tensile strength are investigated. It is experimentally found that the shear strain rate produces the more significant contribution to strain rate effect on dynamic tensile strength. An empirical failure criterion for characterizing the dynamic tensile strength was proposed based on the Hash-in's failure criterion. Although the proposed criterion is just the empirical formula, it is in better agreement with the experimental data and quite simple.

This study was to compare the tensile bond strength and flexibility of four different soft liners(Coe-Soft, Soft Relining, Soft-Liner, Dura Base Soft) before & after thermocycling. Each soft liner was bonded to denture base resin block, and measured the tensile bond strength and modulus of elasticity using Universal testing machine. The mean value of tensile bond strength and modulus of elasticity for each experimental groups were statistically processed by SPSS(Statistical Package of Social Science). The obtained results were as follows : 1. Dura Base Soft had the highest tensile bond strength and Coe-Soft had the lowest tensile bond strength. 2. Coe-Soft had the lowest modulus of elasticity, and Dura Base Soft had the highest modulus of elasticity. 3. Thermocycling had no effects on the tensile bond strength and modulus of elasticity of all the soft liners. 4. The failure modes of Coe-Soft, Soft Relining, Soft Liner were mainly cohesive failure, and that of Dura Base Soft were mainly adhesive failure.
