  • It is important to estimate the hand skin temperature because it reveals not only physiological properties of a certain diseases but also it can estimate even human mental-stress conditions. In this study, we try to estimate the temporal skin temperature distribution of human hand by applying stress-cold test to possibly apply to estimate a subject's blood circulation condition in his or her hand in terms of normal or abnormal state.

  • This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG) in the male adults since many researches were performed with females and few with males. Sleep quality of 35 male adults were analyzed by Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and they were divided into two groups of good sleep quality and poor sleep quality. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), and parietal (P3, P4) regions according to the International 10-20 system. EEG was measured for 3 min per each period of before, during, and after L. angustifolia aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres and in the theta power at the temporal region of right hemisphere (p<0.05), and a decrease in the alpha at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres (p<0.05). And subjects with poor sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the frontal region of left cerebral hemisphere and in the theta power at the frontal region of both hemispheres (p<0.05). It is concluded that L. angustifolia aroma has effects on decreasing an awakening status related-brain wave and increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with good sleep quality, and has also effects on increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with poor sleep quality.

  • In this study, assessment of vulnerability in the management of spatio-temporal groundwater resources considering the surface waterground water interactions was conducted in administrative districts of mountainous regions in Korea. Mountainous regions were classified into four regions and spatial groundwater resources management vulnerability assessment criteria were selected to consider the surface water-ground water interactions. Paju in the central mountainous region, Gapyeongin the mountains region, Gurye in the southwestern mountainous region, and Yangsan in the southeastern mountainous region were selected as a result of the selection of vulnerable area for groundwater resources management. Assessment of the Monthly vulnerability to groundwater resource management due to changes in groundwater levels and infiltration was carried out in the selected areas. As a result of monthly vulnerability to groundwater resources management, December ~ Feburary was assessed as vulnerable to groundwater resource management. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the more efficient groundwater resource management measures by administrative district

  • In the present study, a numerical simulation for the diffusion of hydrogen leakage of FCV(Fuel Cell Vehicle) in a tunnel was performed to aid the assessment of risk in case of leakage accident. The temporal and spatial distributions of the hydrogen concentration around FCV are predicted from the present numerical analyses. Flammable region of 4-74% and explosive region of 18-59% hydrogen by volume was identified from the present results. Factors influencing the diffusion of the hydrogen jet were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of tunnel ventilation system for relieving the accumulation of the leaked hydrogen gas. The distribution of the concentration of the leaked hydrogen for various cases can be used as a database in various applications for the hydrogen safety.

  • For a vision-based driver assistance system, unusual motion detection is one of the important means of preventing accidents. In this paper, we propose a real-time unusual-motion-detection model, which contains two stages: salient region detection and unusual motion detection. In the salient-region-detection stage, we present an improved temporal attention model. In the unusual-motion-detection stage, three kinds of factors, the speed, the motion direction, and the distance, are extracted for detecting unusual motion. A series of experimental results demonstrates the proposed method and shows the feasibility of the proposed model.

  • Electromagnetometers (EMA) have been widely used in articulatory studies as their temporal resolution can capture most speech activities and the fleshpoint information allows one to readily quantify and analyze tongue shape. However, the drawback is that the data lacks details of activity in the pharyngeal region. Several studies have attempted to estimate the unknown pharyngeal shape of the tongue, but few studies are based on unimodal data containing both front and back regions of the tongue at the same time. We use Stone's ball bearing method to obtain fleshpoint data as well as tongue shape. We further introduce a novel way of connecting balls and attaching them onto the tongue to ensure accurate tracking. An Artificial Neural Network is applied to build a map between observable flesh-points, unknown tongue shape, and pharyngeal region and is optimized to efficiently address nonlinearity.

  • In the present study, the diffusion process of hydrogen leaking from a FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) in an underground parking lot was analyzed by numerical simulations in order to assess the risk of a leakage accident. The temporal and spatial changes of the hydrogen concentration as well as the flammable region in the parking lot were predicted numerically. The effects of the leakage flow rate and an additional ventilation fan were investigated to evaluate the ventilation performance in the parking lot to relieve the accumulation of the leaked hydrogen gas. The present numerical analysis can provide useful information such as the distribution of the leaked hydrogen concentration for safety of various hydrogen applications.

  • In order to examine the variational features of Asian dust outbreak in recent years, observed WMO synop data were employed for the period from 1996 to 2007. We first divided Asian dust source regions into four subregions; 1) Taklamakan, 2) Gobi, 3) Inner Mongolia-Manchuria and 4) Loess, and the meteorogical variables such as wind speed, precipitation and threshold wind speed observed during the Asian dust outbreak period were compared with those during non-Asian dust period. The results showed that temporal variation of occurrence frequency of dust outbreak had a strong positive correlation with the frequency of strong wind speed and low precipitation in each of the 4 source regions. Spatial distributions of frequency of dust occurrence after 2002 showed increasing trend in Gobi and Inner Mongolia-Manchuria but decreasing trend in Loess region. This is showing a shift in main source region toward Northwest, especially since 2003.

  • Land-use in Cheongju region is changing rapidly because of the increased interactions of human activities with the environment as population increases. We used multi-temporal Landsat images (1991 and 2000) and DEM data in a post-classification analysis with GIS to map land-use distribution and to analyse factors influencing the land-use changes for Cheongju City. Land-use statistics revealed that substantial land-use changes have taken place and that the built-up areas have expanded by about $17.57km^2(11.47%)$ over the study period (1991-2000). Agricultural lands and forests have decreased substantially while urban and barren lands have been on the increase. Rapid economic developments together with the increasing population were noted to be the major factors influencing rapid land use changes. Urban expansion has replaced urban and barren lands, thereby affecting habitat quality and leading to serious environmental degradation.

  • In this paper, we proposed the object-tracking algorithm that recognizes and estimates the any shaped and size objects using vision system. For the extraction of the object from the background of the acquired images, spatio-temporal filter and signature parsing algorithm are used. Specially, for the solution of correspondence problem of the multiple objects tracking, we compute snake energy and position information of the target objects. Through the real-time tracking experiment, we verified the effectiveness of the suggested tracking algorithm.
