Soil CO2 efflux in a warm-temperature and sub-alpine forest in Jeju, South Korea

  • Background: This study investigated the temporal variation in soil $CO_2$ efflux and its relationship with soil temperature and precipitation in the Quercus glauca and Abies koreana forests in Jeju Island, South Korea, from August 2010 to December 2012. Q. glauca and A. koreana forests are typical vegetation of warm-temperate evergreen forest zone and sub-alpine coniferous forest zone, respectively, in Jeju island. Results: The mean soil $CO_2$ efflux of Q. glauca forest was $0.7g\;CO_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ at $14.3^{\circ}C$ and that of A. koreana forest was $0.4g\;CO_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ at $6.8^{\circ}C$. The cumulative annual soil $CO_2$ efflux of Q. glauca and A. koreana forests was 54.2 and $34.2t\;CO_2\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Total accumulated soil carbon efflux in Q. glauca and A. koreana forests was 29.5 and $18.7t\;C\;ha^{-1}$ for 2 years, respectively. The relationship between soil $CO_2$ efflux and soil temperate at 10 cm depth was highly significant in the Q. glauca ($r^2=0.853$) and A. koreana forests ($r^2=0.842$). Soil temperature was the main controlling factor over $CO_2$ efflux during most of the study period. Also, precipitation may affect soil $CO_2$ efflux that appeared to be an important factor controlling the efflux rate. Conclusions: Soil $CO_2$ efflux was affected by soil temperature as the dominant control and moisture as the limiting factor. The difference of soil $CO_2$ efflux between of Q. glauca and A. koreana forests was induced by soil temperature to altitude and regional precipitation.

Synchronization for VDSL system using DMT (DMT 방식을 이용한 VDSL시스템의 동기)

  • A DMT transceiver recovers the sampling time from reserved sub-carriers, the pilots. Since the pilots are available after the FFT, the symbol synchronization must be done before sample synchronization. In DMT VDSL system, symbol synchronization is handled separately from sample synchronization, although the two processes are intimately related. The DMT symbol itself contains sufficient information, the cyclic extension, for symbol synchronization. Using only the sign bit of received signal, the Maximum Likelihood Estimation solution is derived. The Tx windowing in the transmitter of DMT VDSL system results in the blurring of MLE peaks. We propose the weighted summing MLE method using the sign bit which produces the clearly sharp top of MLE peaks. The stability of symbol synchronization is improved significantly by averaging over a few symbols. This paper presents the study of the original MLE and the weighted summing MLE using sign bit. A clock difference between transmitter and receiver destroys the oahogonality of the carriers. Therefore, a receiver using asynchronous sampling must perform timing correction in the discrete-time domain. We introduce an efficient digital sample synchronization method which is based on temporal and frequency domain digital signal processing.

A STUDY ON MASTICATORY PERFORMANCE AND FUNCTION BY POSTERIOR OCCLUSAL SCHEMES IN COMPLETE DENTURE (총의치의 교합면 형태에 따른 저작 효율 및 기능에 관한 연구)

  • This investigation was designed to determine the effectiveness of the posterior occlusal schemes on masticatory activity during mastication in complete denture. Twelve edentulous subjects were selected for this study. All subjects had no past history and no functional abnormality on masticatory system and TMjoint. And, they had residual ridge of favorable morphology, firm mucosa and Class I skeletal jaw relationship, Twelve experimental denture with interchangeable occlusions(0-degree teeth, 30-degree teeth, Levin teeth and S-A teeth) were constructed for this study. The masticatory performance was analyzed by means of standard sieve(10, 16, 20, 30sieve), and the electrical activity from selected muscles(Temporalis and Masseter muscle) was recorded simultaneously with electromyography(Bio-Pak system) as the subject masticated test foods (rice, peanut and gum) with four different occlusal schemes. Mandibular movement was, also, measured with Sirognathography(Bio-Pak system). These recordings were performed in immediately, after 1 week and after 2 weeks of insertion of complete denture. The results were as follows; 1. The average masticatory performance of 0-degree artificial teeth was higher than any other artificial teeth. 2. Masticatory performance in denture wearer was affected preferentially by food and artificial occlusal schemes. 3. During chewing, there was a statistical difference of EMG activity between masseter and temporal muscle(p<0.01). Especially, EMG activity of working masticatory muscle was highly affected by food rather than by artificial occlusal schemes. 4. In denture wearer, the velocity of opening was not affected by food, whereas, the velocity of closing was faster in soft food chewing than in hard food chewing, and the amount of vertical displacement was grater in chewing of soft and large bolus than in chewing of hard and small bolus. However, the amount of lateral displacement showed conversely (p<0.05). 5. It was considered that masticatory performance in denture wearer is not affected by the condition of residual ridge, the history of denture wear, the preference, the adaptation to artificial teeth and the total mesiodistal length of artificial posterior teeth.

Adaptive Timeout Scheduling for Energy-Efficient, Reliable Data Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Network (무선 센서 네트워크에서 에너지 효율적이고 신뢰성이 높은 데이터 병합을 위한 적응적 타임아웃 스케줄링 기법)

  • In wireless sensor networks, a sensor node with in-network aggregation adjusts the timeout which is a waiting time to receive messages from child nodes. This paper proposes a novel timeout scheduling scheme for data aggregation in wireless sensor networks, which adaptively configures its timeout according to changing data patterns in order to improve energy efficiency and data accuracy during data aggregation. The proposed scheme decreases the timeout when the temporal difference of collected data(data variation) from children is lower than a pre-defined threshold because there is no occurrence of critical events. Conversely, it increases the timeout when the data variation is higher than the pre-defined threshold in order to fulfill more accurate data aggregation. Extensive simulation reveals that the proposed scheme outperforms the cascading-based scheme in terms of energy consumption and data accuracy.

The FASCO BMA based on Motion Vector Prediction using Spatio-temporal Correlations (시공간적 상관성을 이용한 움직임 벡터 예측 기반의 FASCO 블럭 정합 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, a new block-matching algorithm for standard video encoder is presented. The slice competition method is proposed as a new scheme, as opposed to a coarse-to-fine approach. The order of calculating the SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) to fad the best matching block is changed from a raster order to a dispersed one. Based on this scheme, the increasing SAD curve during its calculation is more linear than that of other curves. Then, the candidates of low probability can be removed in the early stage of calculation. And new MV prediction technique with an adaptive search range scheme also assists the proposed block-matching algorithm. As a result, an average of 13% improvement in computational power is recorded by only the proposed MV prediction technique. Synthetically, the computational power is reduced by 3977∼77% than that of the conventional BMAs. The average MAD is always low in various sequences. The results are also very close to the MAD of the full search block-matching algorithm.

  • The purpose of this review was to investigate the neurophysiological and neuroimaging characteristics of patients with depression and anxiety reported in previous studies. A literature search was conducted using Medline and psychiatric textbooks. "Electroencephalography (EEG)", "Event Related Potentials (ERP)", "functional neuroimaging", "heart rate variability (HRV)" and "depression or anxiety" were used as key words. A physiological finding indicated that there was a higher degree of relativity with regards to prefrontal dysfunction in patients with depression. Right prefrontal lobe hyperactivity and left prefrontal hypoactivity were consistently observed, and abnormalities were observed in other regions (ACC, hippocampus, amygdala, etc.). Therefore, dysfunctions in these areas are related to depressive symptoms. In patients with anxiety disorder, each emotional condition showed specific activation patterns in different brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, hippocampus, and limbic system, including the amygdala. However, in the majority of patients with anxiety disorder, the degree of activation was higher in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere. The current data supports that there is a difference in brain dysfunction characteristics between depression and anxiety and that the different activations of various brain regions would play a significant role in the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety disorder.

Temporal and Spatial Variation of the Sea Surface Temperature Differences Derived from Argos Drifter Between Daytime and Nighttime in the Whole East Sea (위성추적 표류부이를 이용한 동해 표면수온의 주야간 온도차에 대한 중규모 시공간 변동)

  • The daytime and nighttime sea surface temperature (SST) differences and their seasonal variabilities in the East Sea were studied using Argos drifters data during 1996~1999. The SST differences for 1,438 data set were derived from 30 Argos drifters related to the NOAA satellite-based location and data collection system. The horizontal variation of SST differences in summer in the East Sea were higher than those in winter. The relationship between the SST differences and the half day moving distances of Argos drifters was studied. Monthly SST difference in the northern and southern part of 38$^{\circ}$N in the East Sea was considered. The SST differences derived from NOAA-14 satellite were compared with those from Argos drifter between daytime and nighttime in the turbulent eddy off Wonsan coast of Korea.

A Study on the Evaluation Method of Urban Open Spaces of Seoul with Remote Sensing: Detection of the Ecotone of the Mt. Pukhansan National Park (위성영상자료를 이용한 서울시 도시녹지의 평가기법 연구: 북한산 국립공원 주연부 탐지)

  • The purpose of this research were to find ways to detect ecotone between the Mt. Pukhansan National Park and adjacent urban residential areas, to measure the width and size of ecotone around the park, and to investigate temporal change of ecotone around the Park. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) derived from TM data (May of 1985, 1987, and 1993) and the analytical capabilities of GIS were used to investigate the impacts of human activities inside of and outside of the boundary of the park. Major findings of the study can be summarized as follows: First, ecotone around the boundary of the national park could be identified from NDVI-distance curves derived by a series of buffering operations with a GIS. Second, average width of ecotone around the park was nealy doubled during 1985-1993 period. Third, NDVI vaules of the park were about 14 percent higher than those of surrounding areas. Finally, it seems that the expansion of the ecotone of the park is related to heavy trampling of visitors and various types of environmental pollution of the adjacent urban areas.

  • A thermal storage systems was designed to correspond to the temporal or quantitative variation in the thermal energy demand, and most of its heat is stored using the latent and sensible heat of the heat storage material. The heat storage method using latent heat has a very complex phenomenon for heat transfer and thermal behavior because it is accompanied by a phase change in the course of heating/cooling of the heat storage material. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to produce an experimentally accessible as well as numerical approach to confirm the heat transfer and thermal behavior of phase change materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate the problems encountered during the actual heat transfer from an internal storage tank through simulation of the process of storing and utilizing thermal energy from the thermal storage tank containing charged PCM. This study used analysis methods to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM with simultaneous heating/cooling conditions in the rectangular space simulating the thermal storage tank. A numerical analysis was carried out in a state considering natural convection using the ANSYS FLUENT(R) program. The result indicates that the slope of the liquid-solid interface in the analysis field changed according to the temperature difference between the heating surface and cooling surface.

Prevalence of feline calicivirus and the distribution of serum neutralizing antibody against isolate strains in cats of Hangzhou, China

  • Background: Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common pathogen of felids, and FCV vaccination is regularly practiced. The genetic variability and antigenic diversity of FCV hinder the effective control and prevention of infection by vaccination. Improved knowledge of the epidemiological characteristics of FCV should assist in the development of more effective vaccines. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of FCV in a population of cats with FCV-suspected clinical signs in Hangzhou and to demonstrate the antigenic and genetic relationships between vaccine status and representative isolated FCV strains. Methods: Cats (n = 516) from Hangzhou were investigated between 2018 and 2020. The association between risk factors and FCV infection was assessed. Phylogenetic analyses based on a capsid coding sequence were performed to identify the genetic relationships between strains. In vitro virus neutralization tests were used to assess antibody levels against isolated FCV strains in client-owned cats. Results: The FCV-positive rate of the examined cats was 43.0%. Risk factors significantly associated with FCV infection were vaccination status and oral symptoms. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a radial phylogeny with no evidence of temporal or countrywide clusters. There was a significant difference in the distribution of serum antibody titers between vaccinated and unvaccinated cats. Conclusions: This study revealed a high prevalence and genetic diversity of FCV in Hangzhou. The results indicate that the efficacy of FCV vaccination is unsatisfactory. More comprehensive and refined vaccination protocols are an urgent and unmet need.
