The effect of heat treatment on the micro-structures and the mechanical properties of 0.002% boron added low carbon steel was investigated. The tensile strength reached the peak at about $880-890^{\circ}C$ with the rising quenching temperature and then the hardness decreased sharply, but the tensile strength hardly decreased. The tensile and yield strength decreased and the total elongation increased with a rising tempering temperature, but the tensile and yield strength sharply fell and the total elongation prominently increased from above a $400-450^{\circ}C$ tempering temperature. Tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) was observed at tempering condition of $350-400^{\circ}C$. In the condition of quenching at $890^{\circ}C$ and tempering at $350^{\circ}C$, the boron precipitates were observed as Fe-C-B and BN together. The hardness decreased in proportion to the tempering temperature untill $350^{\circ}C$ and dropped sharply above $400^{\circ}C$ regardless of the quenching temperature.
This study examined how varying tempering temperatures affect the susceptibility of Cr-Mo low alloy steels to hydrogen embrittlement. A slow strain-rate test (SSRT) was carried out on the steels electrochemically pre-charged with hydrogen in order to examine the hydrogen embrittlement behavior. The results showed that the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the Cr-Mo low alloy steels improved with increasing tempering temperature. Thermal desorption analysis (TDA) revealed that diffusible hydrogen content decreased with increasing tempering temperature, accompanied by a slight increase in the peak temperature. This decrease in hydrogen content was likely due to a reduction in dislocation density which served as reversible hydrogen trap sites. These findings underline the significant role of tempering temperature in enhancing the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of Cr-Mo low alloy steels.
DC potential drop(DCPD) measurement system was made and the optimum measuring conditions have been studied. The room temperature resistivity of commercially available medium carbon steel(S45C) was measured using this technique. DCPD was measured in the specimens which were hardened and tempered at different temperatures. It was found that DCPD reflected the change of the microstructure during tempering very sensitively. It was possible to monitor the stage of tempering of S45C steel nondestructively using DCPD measurement.

Dimensional precision is a critical parameter in net shape processing of ferrous PM components. Sinter-hardening alloys undergo a transformation from austenite to martensite. Martensite formation expands the sintered compact, while tempering hardened steels results in shrinkage. In addition, martensitic regions with high Cu and C contents may contain large amounts of retained austenite. The presence of martensite and retained austenite, in addition to the tempering step, all play a role in the final dimensions of a component. This paper investigates the dimensional and microstructural changes to two sinter-hardening grades through different post-sintering thermal treatments.
Differences in hardness and microstructure between surface and area at 0.3 mm below the surface after quenching and tempering of ductile cast iron for rear planet carrier of automotive transmission have been investigated. Microstructure of ductile cast iron consisted of ferrite, pearlite, and nodular graphite. The amount of pearlite increased with going down to the half-thickness area. It was found that Cr and Mo segregated to the pearlite and the pearlite transformed to the harder martensite during quenching. The martensite was more resistant to the decomposition to ferrite and cementite during tempering because of segregation of Cr and Mo, resulting in the harder tempered martensite. Consequently, the hardness of the surface with less amount of pearlite, corresponding to the harder martensite in the quenched and tempered microstructure, was lower than that of the area at 0.3 mm below the surface.
440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5wt.%) and addition of small amount of vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum 0.4wt.%, 0.4wt.% and 0.68wt.% respectively were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the intergranular corrosion were investigated through the method of DL-EPR(Double-electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation). It was thought that the highest DOS(Degree of sensitization) of specimens was obtained at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ regardless of types of alloy because of the precipitation of Cr7C3. Addition of vanadium lowered DOS a little above the tempering temperature of $550^{\circ}C$. It was considered to be effected by precipitation of VC carbides. Intergranular corrosion was influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements of V, W and Mo.
An automobile clutch diaphragm spring is operating in a closed clutch housing under high temperature and subject to high stress concentration in driving condition, which frequently causes cracks and fracture. The material of spring is required to possess sufficient fatigue strength and tenacity, which depend largely on the condition of tempering heat treatment. In this paper, specimens are made under a number of different tempering temperatures md tested to find the optimal tempering heat treatment condition. The experiments include the verification of microscopic structure, hardness, tensile strength, fatigue crack growth rate, stress intensity factor range and residual stress. Also, decarbonization, which occurs in actual heat treatment process, is measured and allowable decarbonization depth is studied by durability test.
Effect of tempering treatment on the mechanical properties of 12Cr heat resistant steel with ferrite phase was investigate in this study. As time and temperature of tempering treatment were increase, C and Cr contents in matrix structure were decreased. Due to increase of the amount of Cr26C6 type carbides. It was confirmed in mechanical properties experimental that tensile strength and hardness were decreased, while elongation and impact value were, increased with increasing the time and temperature.
Decarburized zone of metal tongue which is used in seat belt for automobiles was carbon-restoration quenched and tempered using nitrogen-methanol gaseous atmosphere. The effects of microstructure and mechanical properties of metal tongue on the effectiveness of carbon-restoration during tempering was studied. Metal tongue showed $20{\sim}30{\mu}m$ decarburized zone. However, after carbon-restoration, it has uniform microstructure and thus hardness without decarburized zone. Carbon-restoration quenching and tempering process resulted in better wear and corrosion resistances than quenching and tempering process.
The precipitate percentage and the spheroidization percentage were analyzed as a function of the tempering temperatures and the alloying elements for high strength preheat-treated steel. The optimum temperature of tempering produced the small precipitates of nano size. The precipitate percentage and the spheroidization percentage were increased with the tempering temperatures. The size of precipitate decreased as the spheroidization of carbon precipitates progressed. The alloying elements such as Cr and Mo reduced the sphereidization temperature.
