  • Resonant-Type Magnetometer(RM) using high permeability isotropic magnetic material is designed to implement Smart Digital Compass. Theoretically, the inductance L of a coil, winding on the magnetic core, is proportion to the change of permeability $\mu(H)$ and, the change values of L can be obtain as the change of frequency by simple Schmitt Trigger circuit. By the use of integrated circuit switch, the RM can be designed with simple circuit and it can provide overcoming the drift by temperature and the variation of operating points in $\mu(H)$ curve. The facts that Metglas 2705M is an optimum magnetic material and ship's permanent magnetism can be obtain from measured values of RM are also known in this study.

  • The $O_2$ annealing technique has considerably suppressed the leakage current of GaN power devices, but this forms NiO at Ni-based Schottky contact with increasing on-resistance. The purpose of the present study was to fabricate 1.5 kV GaN Schottky barrier diodes by improving $O_2$-annealing process and GaN buffer. The proposed $O_2$ annealing performed after alloying ohmic contacts in order to avoid NiO construction. The ohmic contact resistance ($R_C$) was degraded from 0.43 to $3.42{\Omega}-mm$ after $O_2$ annealing at $800^{\circ}C$. We can decrease RC by lowering temperature of $O_2$ annealing. The isolation resistance of test structure which indicated the surface and buffer leakage current was significantly increased from $2.43{\times}10^7$ to $1.32{\times}10^{13}{\Omega}$ due to $O_2$ annealing. The improvement of isolation resistance can be caused by formation of group-III oxides on the surface. The leakage current of GaN Schottky barrier diode was also suppressed from $2.38{\times}10^{-5}$ to $1.68{\times}10^{-7}$ A/mm at -100 V by $O_2$ annealing. The GaN Schottky barrier diodes achieved the high breakdown voltage of 700, 1400, and 1530 V at the anode-cathode distance of 5, 10, and $20{\mu}m$, respectively. The optimized $O_2$ annealing and $4{\mu}m$-thick C-doped GaN buffer obtained the high breakdown voltage at short drift length. The proposed $O_2$ annealing is suitable for next-generation GaN power switches due to the simple process and the low the leakage current.

  • Power semiconductor devices required the low on-resistance and high breakdown voltage. Wide band-gap materials opened a new technology of the power devices which promised a thin drift layer at an identical breakdown voltage. The diamond had the wide band-gap of 5.5 eV which induced the low power loss, high breakdown capability, low intrinsic carrier generation, and high operation temperature. We investigated the p-type pseudo-vertical diamond Schottky barrier diodes using a numerical simulation. The impact ionization rate was material to calculating the breakdown voltage. We revised the impact ionization rate of the diamond for adjusting the parallel-plane breakdown field at 10 MV/cm. Effects of the field plate on the breakdown voltage was also analyzed. A conventional diamond Schottky barrier diode without field plate exhibited the high forward current of 0.52 A/mm and low on-resistance of $1.71{\Omega}-mm$ at the forward voltage of 2 V. The simulated breakdown field of the conventional device was 13.3 MV/cm. The breakdown voltage of the conventional device and proposed devices with the $SiO_2$ passivation layer, anode field plate (AFP), and cathode field plate (CFP) was 680, 810, 810, and 1020 V, respectively. The AFP cannot alleviate the concentration of the electric field at the cathode edge. The CFP increased the breakdown voltage with evidences of the electric field and potential. However, we should consider the dielectric breakdown because the ideal breakdown field of the diamond is higher than that of the $SiO_2$, which is widely used as the passivation layer. The real breakdown voltage of the device with CFP decreased from 1020 to 565 V due to the dielectric breakdown.

  • To approximate the threshold of the fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) system, validation of the measurements is mandatory. Naturally, the system shows uncertainties due to measuring sensors - mostly thermocouples or RTDs - and due to repeatability. The uncertainty of a thermocouple comes from natural variation or a drift of the thermocouple measurement. Considering the natural variation behaves like zero-mean white noise, its natural variation can be characterized closely by the steady-state standard deviation. However, residuals between measurements and no-fault references in FDD systems show a statistical distribution with various uncertainties. In this paper, steady-state variations of measurement residuals were investigated by utilizing built-in temperature sensors in a heat pump for the model development and the final application.

  • This paper suggests the novel light-weight signal processing algorithm for wireless sensor network applications which needs low computing complexity and power consumption. Exponential average method (EA) is utilized by real time, to process the magnetometer signal which is analyzed to understand the own physical characteristic in time domain. EA provides the robustness about noise, magnetic drift by temperature and interference, furthermore, causes low memory consumption and computing complexity for embedded processor. Hence, optimal parameter of proposal algorithm is extracted by statistical analysis. Using general and precision magnetometer, detection probability over 90% is obtained which restricted by 5% false alarm rate in simulation and using own developed magnetometer H/W, detection probability over 60~70% is obtained under 1~5% false alarm rate in simulation and experiment.

  • Quality control of Argo(Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography) data is crucial by reason that salinity measurements are liable to experience some drift and offset due to biofouling, contamination of sensor and wash-out of biocide. The automated Argo real-time quality control has a limit of sorting data quality, so that WJO program is adopted as standardized method of Argo delayed mode quality control (DMQc) in the world that is a precise quality control method. We conducted DMQC on pressure, temperature and salinity measured by Argo floats in the Pacific Ocean including expert evaluation. Particularly, salinity data were corrected using WJO program. 4 salinity profiles of Argo delayed mode were compared with nearby in situ CTD data and other Argo data in deep layer where oceanographic conditions are stable in time and space. The differences of both salinities were lower than target accuracy of Argo. As compared with the difference of salinities before DMQC, those after DMQC decreased by 60-80 percent. Quality of delayed mode salinity data seemed to be improved correcting salinity data suggested by WJO program.

  • Most occupancy sensors installed in buildings, households and so forth are pyroelectric infra-red (PIR) sensors. One of disadvantages is that PIR sensor can not detect the stationary person due to its functionality of detecting the variation of thermal temperature. In order to overcome this problem, the utilization of camera vision sensors has gained interests, where object tracking is used for detecting the stationary persons. However, the object tracking has an inherent problem such as tracking drift. Therefore, the recognition of humans in static trackers is an important task. In this paper, we propose a CNN-based human recognition to determine whether a static tracker contains humans. Experimental results validated that human and non-humans are classified with accuracy of about 88% and that the proposed method can be incorporated into practical vision occupancy sensors.

  • Complex organic molecules (COMs) are increasingly observed in the environs of young stellar objects (YSOs), including hot cores/corinos around high-mass/low-mass protostars and protoplanetary disks. It is widely believed that COMs are first formed in the ice mantle of dust grains and subsequently released to the gas by thermal sublimation at high temperatures (T>100 K) in strong stellar radiation fields. In this paper, we report a new mechanism that can desorb COMs from icy grain mantles at low temperatures (T<100K), which is termed rotational desorption. The rotational desorption process of COMs comprises two stages: (1) ice mantles on suprathermally rotating grains spun-up by radiative torques (RATs) are first disrupted into small fragments by centrifugal stress, and (2) COMs and water ice then evaporate rapidly from the tiny fragments (i.e., radius a <1nm) due to thermal spikes or enhanced thermal sublimation due to increased grain temperature for larger fragments (a>1 nm). We discuss the implications of rotational desorption for releasing COMs and water ice in the inner region of protostellar envelopes (hot cores and corinos), photodissociation regions, and protoplanetary disks (PPDs). In shocked regions of stellar outflows, we find that nanoparticles can be spun-up to suprathermal rotation due to supersonic drift of neutral gas, such that centrifugal force can be sufficient to directly eject some molecules from the grain surface, provided that nanoparticles are made of strong material. Finally, we find that large aggregates (a~ 1-100 micron) exposed to strong stellar radiations can be disrupted into individual icy grains via RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD) mechanism, which is followed by rotational desorption of ice mantles and evaporation of COMs. In the RATD picture, we expect some correlation between the enhancement of COMs and the depletion of large dust grains in not very dense regions of YSOs.

  • Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) and Korea Astronomy and Space Institute (KASI) have been participating in the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Scientific Association as an affiliate institution in order to observe the polar ionosphere since 2015. During the period of December 16-21, 2016 and January 3-9, 2018, the observations for the polar ionospheric parameters such as the electron density profiles, ion drift, and electron/ion temperature are carried out in the polar cap/cusp region by the EISCAT Svalbard radar (ESR). The purpose of the observations is to investigate the characteristic of the winter ionosphere in the dayside polar cap/cusp region. In this paper, we briefly report the results of the ESR observations for winter daytime ionosphere and also the simultaneous observations for the ionosphere-thermosphere system together with the balloon-borne instrument High-Altitude Interferometer WIND Experiment (HIWIND) performed by the High Altitude Observatory (HAO), National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). We further introduce our research activities using long-term EISCAT observations for the occurrence of ion upflow and the climatology of the polar ionospheric density profiles in comparison with the mid-latitude ionosphere. Finally, our future research plans will briefly be introduced.

  • A simple new method was developed for the determination of betaine in Fructus Lycii using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with evaporative light scattering detection (HILIC-ELSD). Good chromatographic separation and reasonable betaine retention was achieved on a Kinetex HILIC column ($2.1{\times}100mm$, $2.6{\mu}m$) packed with fused-core particle. The mobile phase consisted of (A) acetonitrile and (B) 10 mM ammonium formate (pH 3.0)/acetonitrile (90/10, v/v). It was used with gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.7 mL/min. The column temperature was set at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and the injection volume was $10{\mu}L$. The ELSD drift tube temperature was $50^{\circ}C$ and the nebulizing gas (nitrogen) pressure was 3.0 bar. Stachydrine, a zwitterionic compound, was used as an internal standard. Calibration curve over $10-250{\mu}g/mL$ showed good linearity ($R^2$ > 0.9992) and betaine in the 70% methanol extract of Fructus Lycii was well separated from other peaks. Intraand inter-day precision ranged from 1.1 to 3.0% and from 2.4 to 5.3%, respectively, while intra- and inter-day accuracy ranged from 100.0 to 107.0% and from 94.3 to 103.9%, respectively. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was $10{\mu}g/mL$ and the recoveries were in the range of 98.2-102.7%. The developed HILIC-ELSD method was successfully applied to quantitatively determine the amount of betaine in fourteen Fructus Lycii samples from different locations, demonstrating that this method is simple, rapid, and suitable for the quality control of Fructus Lycii.
