Ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) is a power generation method that utilizes temperature difference between the warm surface seawater and cold deep sea water of ocean. As potential sources of clean-energy supply, Ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) power plants' viability has been investigated. Therefore, this paper evaluated the thermodynamic performance of solar-OTEC convergence system for the production with electric power and desalinated water. The comparison analysis of solar-OTEC convergence system performance was carried out as the fluid temperature, saturated temperature difference and pressure of flash evaporator under equivalent conditions. As a results, maximum system efficiency, electric power and fresh water output show at 40, 10, 2.5 kPa of the flash evaporator pressure, respectively. And their respective enhancement ratios were approximately 6.1, 18, 8.6 times higher than that of the base open OTEC system. Also, performance of solar-OTEC system is the highest in the flash evaporator pressure of 10 kPa.
The heat transfer characteristics of inorganic salt for high temperature heat storage material of solar power system were examined. The inorganic salts employed in this study was a mixture of $NaNO_3$ and $KNO_3$ and the operating temperature range was determined by measuring the melting temperature with DSC and by measuring the thermal decomposition temperature with TGA. The heat transfer characteristics was qualitatively obtained in terms of temperature profiles of salt in the tanks during the heat storage and heat release process as a function of steam flow rates, steam inlet temperature and the inlet position of steam. The effects of steam flow rates and inlet temperature of steam were experimentally determined and the effect of natural convection was observed due to significant density difference with temperature.
A theoretical model was developed to evaluate the effects of soil and airflow characteristics on the soil-air heat exchanger performances. The model, which includes three-dimensional transient energy and mass equilibrium-equation, was solved by using a computer program that uses Finite Difference Methods and Gauss-Seidel iteration computation. Energy gains, heat exchange efficiencies, and outlet air temperature are presented including the effects of soil moisture content, soil conductivity, soil thermal diffusivity, and soil initial temperature. Also, data related to the effects of airflow rate and inlet air temperature on the thermal performance of the system are presented. The results indicated that energy gains depend on soil conductivity, soil thermal diffusivity, and soil initial temperature. Heat exchange efficiencies relied on air mass flow rate and soil moisture content.
Studies have shown that the thermal performance of buildings changes depending on the year of construction completion. It leads to increased energy consumption of buildings and significant financial burden on users. Thus, this study has calculated the thermal insulation performance of 86 apartments quantitatively, using temperature difference ratio and sensible heat flux. Also, energy consumption characteristics depending on the year of construction completion and thermal insulation performance were analyzed by comparatively analyzing the results of insulation performance evaluation and heating costs. The analysis results are as follows. As for thermal insulation performance, it was around 70% lower in the apartments completed before 1985, compared to apartments completed after 2010. As for heating costs, the apartments with the highest heating cost incurred 1.5 higher heating cost than the apartment with the lowest heating cost. In terms of the insulation performance evaluation, the difference was 2.5-fold.
Solar radiation data measured by pyranometers is of fundamental use in various fields. In the field of atmospheric optics, the measurement of solar energy must be precise, and the equipment needs to be maintained frequently. However, there seem to be many errors with the existing type of pyranometer, which is an element of the solar-energy observation apparatus. In particular, the error caused by the thermal dome effect occurs because of the thermal offset generated from a temperature difference between outer dome and inner casing. To resolve the thermal dome effect, intensive observation was conducted using the method and instrument designed by Ji and Tsay. The characteristics of the observed global solar radiation were analyzed by classifying the observation period into clear, cloudy, and rainy cases. For the clear-weather case, the temperature difference between the pyranometer's case and dome was highest, and the thermal dome effect was $0.88MJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. Meanwhile, the thermal dome effect in the cloudy case was $0.69MJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$, because the reduced global solar radiation thus reduced the temperature difference between case and dome. In addition, the rainy case had the smallest temperature difference of $0.21MJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. The quantification of this thermal dome effect with respect to the daily accumulated global solar radiation gives calculated errors in the cloudy, rainy, and clear cases of 6.53%, 6.38%, and 5.41% respectively.
To reduce structural weight, light metals, including aluminum and magnesium alloys, have been widely used in various industries such as aircraft, transportation and automobiles. Recently, composite materials such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) and Graphite Epoxy Composite Material (GECM) have also been applied. However, aluminum and its alloys suffer corrosion from various factors, which include aggressive ions, pH, solution temperature and galvanic contact by potential difference. Moreover, carbon fiber in CFRP and GECM is a very efficient cathode, and very noble in the galvanic series. Galvanic contact between carbon fiber composites and metals in electrolytes such as rain or seawater, is highly undesirable. Notwithstanding the potentially dangerous effects of chloride and temperature, there is little research on galvanic corrosion according to chloride concentration and temperature. This work focused on the effects of chloride concentration and solution temperature on AA7075T6. The increased galvanic corrosion between CRFP and AA7075T6 was evaluated by electrochemical experiments, and these effects were elucidated.
The tree is regarded as an sustainable architectural outdoor design element which reduce urban heat island effect by its solar shading and evapotranspiration. This study carried out field observations of measuring thermal environment of selected tree and its ambience to determine passive cooling effects. Results from the field observations are as below; Tree-shading effect to the thermal environment can not be properly evaluated by merely measuring air temperature differences between tree-shaded space and unshaded space for the maximum temperature difference is less than $1.5^{\circ}C$. The differences of longwave radiation and shortwave radiation between tree-shaded space and unshaded space are measured. Shortwave radiation is considered as a main thermal comfort determining factor for the difference of the shortwave radiation is much bigger than that of longwave radiation. By thermal infrared image analysis, the surface temperature of the tree under strong solar radiation is measured same as ambient air temperature. By which the evapotranspiration is considered to retard tree surface temperature raising effectively.
This study carried out to understand the thermal characteristics of various surface material which compose the city through the observation in the summer. To examine passive cooling effect of planting of building, it is arranged four different materials that is natural grass, grass block, concrete slab and artificial grass. The results of this study are as follows; (1) Natural grass and grass block show the lower surface temperature because of the structures of leaf can do more thermal dissipation effectively. (2) There is little surface temperature between artificial grass and concrete. But there is little high surface temperature difference between natural grass and concrete because of latent heat effect. (3) The concrete can play a role of the tropical nights phenomenon as high heat capacity of concrete compare with other materials. (4) It is nearly same color in artificial grass and natural grass but there is large difference between natural grass and artificial grass at albedo. There is different albedo in near infrared ray range. (5) A short wave radiation gives more effect at the globe temperature than long wave radiation. (6) The artificial turf protected the slab surface temperature increase in spite of thin and low albedo materials.
The study on ice thermal storage system is to improve total system performance and increase the economical efficiency in actual all-conditioning facilities. To obtain the high charging and discharging efficiencies in ice thermal storage system, the improvement of thermal stratification is essential, therefore the process flow must be piston flow in the cylindrical type. With the relation of the aspect ratio(H/D) in the storage tank, the stratification is formed better as inlet flow rate is smaller. If the inlet and the outlet port are settled at the upside and downside of the storage tank, higher storage rate could be obtainable. In case that the flow directions inside the thermal storage tank are the upward flow in charging and the downward in discharging, thermal stratification is improved because the thermocline thickness is maitained thin and the degree of stratification increases respectively. In the charging process, in case of inlet flow rate the thermal stratification has a tendency to be improved with the lower flow rate and smaller temperature gradient in case of inlet temperature, the large temperature difference between inflowing water and storage water are influenced from the thermal conduction. The effect of the reference temperature difference is seen differently in comparison with the former study for chilled and hot water. In the discharging process, the thermal stratification is improved by the effect of the thermal stratification of the charging process.
