  • The purposes of this dissertation are to demonstrate that DSC theromoanaytical methods of vulcanization can provide useful informations on the vulcanization characteristics of industrial formulations and also provides the potential basis for a rapid and complete method of sulfur and vulcanizing accelerator analysis for quality control. The influences of those factors such as heating rate, scan temperature, vucanizing accelerator's type and concentration upon vulcanization exotherm in NR and NBR compounds in the presence of vulcanizing accelerators such as TMTD,MBTS,DPG,TMTM,CBS, and MBT were evaluated by means of DSC. In order to examine the credibility in the DSC method, the same samples which were used for DSC method were studied to compare the DSC results with the ODR (Oscillating Disk Rheometer) data. The results obtained were as follows 1. In the DSC dynamic experiments, the observed enthalpy results from vulcanization depends upon the heating rate; In the range of 2 to $20^{\circ}C/min$ of heating rate, as the heating rate was increased the enthalpy change was also increased. However, over the heating rate of $30^{\circ}C/min$ it was observed that the enthalpy change was decreased as the heating rate was further increased. Without regard to the change of enthalpy, tremendous instantaneous heat evolving was observed in the range of high heating rates. 2. For the samples which are added with various vulcanizing accelerators, the activation energies of vulcanization were as follows; 3. Regarding to the influences of vulcanizining accelerator's types upon the characteristics of vulcanization exotherm, NR and NBR compounds in the presence of thiuramsulphide compounds type accelerators such as TMTD, TMTM, were exhibited sharper and higher vulclanization exotherm than others. From the resuts of DSC thermograms which was distributed in even shape in the broad temperature range, it was clearly shown that the guanidine compounds type accelerator such as DPG acts as a delayed acting accelerator. 4. In the comparison of DSC and ODR results, the dependency of temperature in the cure rate and the observed conversions show good agreements between two results. 5. In the same curatives, by the comparison of glass transition temperatures, it was possible to predict relative values of maximum torques. Consequently, from the present studies, it is shown that the DSC thermoanalytical method can provide an alternate new method for rapid and complete quality control analysis of rubber industry.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques based on the use of active-sensing piezoelectric (PZT) materials have received considerable attention. The validation of the PZT functionality during SHM operation is critical to successfully implementing a reliable SHM system. In this study, we investigated several parameters that affect the admittance-based sensor diagnostic process. We experimentally identified the temperature dependency of the active-sensor diagnostic process. We found that the admittance-based sensor diagnostic process can differentiate the adhesion conditions of bonding materials that are used to install a PZT on a structure, which is important when designing a sensor diagnostic process for an SHM system.

  • This study aims at investigating the size-dependent free vibration of porous nanoplates when exposed to hygrothermal environment and rested on Kerr foundation. Based on the modified power-law model, material properties of porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplates are supposed to change continuously along the thickness direction. The generalized nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory incorporating three scale factors (i.e. lower- and higher-order nonlocal parameters, strain gradient length scale parameter), is employed to expand the assumption of second shear deformation theory (SSDT) for considering the small size effect on plates. The governing equations are obtained based on Hamilton's principle and then the equations are solved using an analytical method. The elastic Kerr foundation, as a highly effected foundation type, is adopted to capture the foundation effects. Three different patterns of porosity (namely, even, uneven and logarithmic-uneven porosities) are also considered to fill some gaps of porosity impact. A comparative study is given by using various structural models to show the effect of material composition, porosity distribution, temperature and moisture differences, size dependency and elastic Kerr foundation on the size-dependent free vibration of porous nanoplates. Results show a significant change in higher-order frequencies due to small scale parameters, which could be due to the size effect mechanisms. Furthermore, Porosities inside of the material properties often present a stiffness softening effect on the vibration frequency of FG nanoplates.

  • The objective of this study is to propose a mathematical model for a pervaporation process for concentrating hydrogen peroxide. The process was developed by NASA, which consists of a shell and membrane tubes, where a liquid hydrogen peroxide solution flows in the shell, and a sweep gas flows in the tubes countercurrent to each other. The liquid retentate is concentrated as more water molecules permeate and evaporate through the membrane than hydrogen peroxide. For this process, a mathematical model has been developed in the form of a system of nonlinear partial differential algebraic equations based on a sorption-diffusion mechanism for permeation, an Arrhenius relationship for the temperature dependency of the permeate flux, and mass and momentum balances for the liquid concentrations and flows in the membrane module. The dynamic behavior of the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the retentate side has been simulated by solving a simplified version of the proposed model, and the result is compared with the experimental data reported in the NASA patent.

  • Magnetic hyperthermia mediated by superparamagnetic particles is mainly based in sinusoidal waveforms as excitation signals. Temperature changes are conventionally explained by rotation of the particles in the surrounding medium. This is a hypothesis quite questionable since habitual experimental setups only produce changes in the magnetic module, not in the field lines trajectories. Theoretical results were tested by changing the waveform of the exciting signal in order to compare non-sinusoidal signals against sinusoidal signals. Experiments were done at different frequencies: 200 KHz, 400 KHz, 600 KHz, 800 KHz and 1 MHz. Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide samples (SPION), made of magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) and suspended in water (100 mg/ml), were used. Magnetic field strength varies from $0.1{\pm}0.015KA/m$ to $0.6{\pm}0.015KA/m$. In this study was observed that the power loss depends on the applied frequency: for 1 to 2.5 RMS current the responses for each signal are part of the higher section of the exponential function, and for 3.5 to 8 RMS current the response is clearly the decrement exponential function's tale (under $1{\times}10^3LER/gr$).

  • Uniformity related issues in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) are within wafer non-uniformity (WIWNU), wafer to wafer non-uniformity (WTWNU), planarity and dishing/erosion. Here, the WIWNU that originates from spatial distribution of independent variables such as temperature, sliding distance, down force and material removal rate (MRR) during CMP, relies to spatial dependency. Among various sources of spatial irregularity, hardness and modulus of pad and surface roughness in sources for pad uniformity are great, especially. So, we investigated the spatial variation of pad surface characteristics using pad measuring system (PMS) and roughness measuring system. Reduced peak height ($R_{pk}$) of roughness parameter shows a strong correlation with the removal rate, and the distribution of relative sliding distance onwafer during polishing has an effect on the variation of $R_{pk}$ and WIWNU. Also, the results of pad wear profile thorough developed pad profiler well coincides with the kinematical simulation of conditioning, and it can contribute for the enhancement of WIWNU in CMP process.

  • In hydrothermal reaction tests, smectite-to-illite conversion was identified using a domestic bentonite which is favorably considered as a buffer material, and its dependency on various hydrothermal conditions was investigated. The analysis results of the XRD and Si concentration indicated that the smectite-to-illite conversion was a major process of bentonite alteration under the hydrothermal conditions. The temperature, potassium concentration in solution, and pH were observed to significantly affect the smectite-to illite conversion. A model of conversion reaction rate was suggested to evaluate the long-term stability of smectite composing a major constituent of bentonitic buffer. It was expected from the evaluation results that the smectite would keep its integrity for very long disposal time under a normal condition, whitens it might be converted to illite by 50 percent after over $5{\times}10^4$ year of disposal time under a conservative condition and consequently lose its swelling capacity as a buffer material of a repository.

  • The semiconductor detector has a high sensitive to radiation and a small volume. It has been frequently used in high energy photon and electron beamdosimetry. However, Semiconductor detector are subject to radiation damage in high energy radiation beam which reduces the sensitivity and creat a large discrepancy. In this experiments, P-type semiconductor was irradiated to 18 MeV electron beam with pre-irradiation for reducing the sensitivity for high reproducibility and investigated the dose characteristics against the dose rate variations. The sensitivity per unit dose in small dose rate showed a 35% large different to a large dose rate with pre-irradiation dose for 0.5 KGy and 20% for 3 KGyin this study. The silicon detector has showed a large dependency of beam direction with 13% discrepancy and a linear sensitive as increased temperature.

  • Recently, the electrical insulation design for electrical apparatuses is important to cope with the tendency of high voltage. The degradation characteristics of a superconducting coil due to an electrical breakdown should be considered to design a high voltage superconducting coil. In this paper, the degradation characteristics of 2G high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires are studied with respect to electrical breakdown tests. To analyze the dependency of the degradation characteristics of 2G HTS wires, the electrical breakdown tests are performed with AC(alternating current) and DC(direct current) voltage. All tests are performed by applying various magnitudes of AC and DC breakdown voltages. To verify the degradation characteristics of 2G HTS wires, the tests are performed with various 2G HTS wires with respect to stabilizer materials. The degradation characteristics of 2G HTS wires, such as Ic(critical current) and index number are measured by performing electrical breakdown tests. It is found that the characteristics such as Ic and index number can be degraded by an electrical breakdown. Moreover, it is concluded that the degradation characteristics of 2G HTS wires are affected by the stabilizer material and applied voltages. The cross-sectional view of 2G HTS wires is observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As results, it is found that the degradation characteristics of 2G HTS wires are concerned with hardness and electrical conductivity of stabilizer layers.

  • The electrical conduction mechanism of high dielectric $(Ba,Sr)TiO_3$ (BST) thin film capacitor, which is the promising cell capacitor for high density DRAM, was investigated in low field region (<0.2MV/cm). It is known that the current in the low field region consists of dielectric relaxation current and leakage current. The current-time (I-t) measurement technique under the constant voltage was used for extracting successfully each current component. The conduction mechanism of the BST capacitor was deduced from the dependency of the current on the measurement temperature, strength of electric field, the polarity of applied electric field and post annealing process. From these results, it was suggested that the dielectric relaxation current and the leakage current are originated from the redistribution of internally trapped electron by hopping process and Pool-Frenkel conduction mechanism, respectively. It was also concluded that traps causing these two current components are due to oxygen vacancies within the BST film.
