  • The steam reformer for hydrogen production from methane is studied by a numerical method. Langmuir- Hinshelwood model is incorporated for catalytic surface reactions, and the pseudo-homogeneous model is used to take into account local equilibrium phenomena between a catalyst and bulk gas. Dominant chemical reactions are Steam Reforming (SR) reaction, Water-Gas Shift (WGS) reaction, and Direct Steam Reforming (DSR) reaction. The numerical results are validated with experimental results at the same operating conditions. Using the validated code, parametric study has been numerically performed in view of the steam reformer performance. As increasing a wall temperature, the fuel conversion increases due to the high heat transfer rate. When Steam to Carbon Ratio (SCR) increases, the concentration of carbon monoxide decreases since WGS reaction becomes more active. When increasing Gas Hourly Space Velocity (GHSV), the fuel conversion decreases due to the heat transfer limitation and the low residence time. The reactor shape effects are also investigated. The length and radius of cylindrical reactors are changed at the same catalyst volume. The longer steam reformer is, the better steam reformer performs. However, system energy efficiency decreases due to the large pressure drop.

  • The objective of this paper is to describe the experimental and numerical investigation of the analysis of the heat transfer in a solar chemical reactor. These are compared about methane steam reforming process in the solar chemical reactor which was a volumetric absorber consisting of honeycomb and a multilayered catalyst supports. With this high operating temperature, convective heat loss, thermal fracture are important features for designing SCR. In order to estimate the system performance and to design the actual solar reactor with various conditions, CFD analysis was used in this study. The nickel oxide porous metal is inserted inside the solar chemical reactor to increase the conversion rate of the reforming reaction. Simulation has been carried out based on the experimental data. According to the simulation results, the optimum methane-steam mole ratio and thickness and numbers of catalyst supports were obtained.

  • Long-term exposure to loud noise affects performance since it changes arousal level, distracts attention, and also is able to evoke subjective stress accompanied by negative emotional states. The purpose of the study was to analyze dynamics of subjective and physiological variables during a relatively long-lasting (30 min) exposure to white noise (85 dB[A]). Physiological signals were recorded on 15 college students during 30 min of intense auditory stimulation. Autonomic variables, namely skin conductance level , non-specific SCR number, inter-best intervals in ECG, heart rate variability index (HF/LF ratio of HRV), skin temperature, as well as respiration rate were analyzed on 5 min epoch basis. Psychological assessment (subjective rating of stress level) was also repeated every 5 min. Statistical analysis was employed to trace the time course of the dynamics of subjective and autonomic physiological variables and their relationships. Results showed that the intense noise evoked subjective stress as well as associated autonomic nervous system responses. However it was shown that physiological variables endured specific changes in the process of exposure to the loud white noise. Discussed were probable psychophysiological mechanisms mediating reactivity to long-term auditory stimulation of high intensity, namely short-term activation, followed by transient adaptation (with relatively stable autonomic balance) and then a subsequent wave of arousal due to tonic sympathetic dominance.

  • Investigation was carried out lean burn de-NOx properties of Pt-$TiO_2$ bifunctional catalyst by propylene in order to get the high de-NOx activity and the wide temperature window under coexistence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. Only noncatalyst and carrier catalyst themselves had NOx conversion activity at high temperature over $400^{\circ}C$. NOx conversion activity of catalysts exchanged copper ion resulted in Cu-$TiO_2$>Cu-ZSM-5>Cu-$Al_2O_3$>CU-YZ>Cu-AZ. Catalysts impregnated with platinum based on titania gave the results of high NOx conversion activity at low temperature. $250^{\circ}C$. Bifunctional catalysts based on Pt-$TiO_2$ showed high NOx conversion activity both at a low zone of $300^{\circ}C$ and a high zone of $500^{\circ}C$. Pt-$TiO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst gave the highest NOx conversion activity at a low temperature zone. and Pt-$TiO_2$/$Mn_2O_3$(21) catalyst gave the highest NOx conversion activity at a high temperature zone. Under the coexistence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. NOx conversion activities of 0.55wt%Pt-$TiO_2$/5wt%Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst was high both at a low and high temperature zone, and increased depending on oxygen concentration. 0.55wt%Pt-$TiO_2$/5wt%Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst showed the best correlation between de-NOx activities and the propyl ere conversion rates to CO on the log function.

  • The NOx conversion properties of Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ and $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalysts were studied for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with ammonia. The performance of the catalysts was investigated in terms of their $NOx$ conversion activity as a function of the reaction temperature and space velocity. The activity of the Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ catalyst decreased with increasing reaction temperature and space velocity. However, the activity of the $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst increased with increasing reaction temperature. High activity of the Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ catalyst was observed at temperatures below $200^{\circ}C$. H2-TPR and XPS analyses were conducted to explain these results. It was found that the activity of the Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ catalyst was influenced by the thermal shock caused by the change of the initial reaction temperature, whereas the $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst was not affected by the initial reaction temperature. In the case of catalyst C, the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency decreased with increasing space velocity. The decrease in the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency with increasing space velocity was much less for catalyst D than for catalyst C.

  • Deactivation characteristics of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts were studied for selective catalytic reduction(SCR) of NOx with ammonia in the presence of $SO_2$. Performance of catalyst was investigated for $deNO_x$ activity while changing temperature, $SO_2$ concentration. The activity of catalyst was decreased with the increase of $SO_2$ concentration and reaction time. Also, degree of activity drop was largely decreased with the increase of reaction temperature in the range of $250{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. Physicochemical properties of deactivated catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, TPD analysis. According to the analysis results, deactivation phenomena occur due to the relatively high formation of ammonium sulfate salts, which created by unreacted ammonia and water in the presence of $SO_2$. It was revealed that ammonium sulfate cause the pore plogging of support and deposition of active matter.

  • In this study, co-combustion characteristics of Chinese bituminous coal and North Korean anthracite were investigated using a 2 MWe scale circulating fluidized bed power plant. At first, the combustion efficiency of bituminous coal of China and Australia as a function of excess air ratio and temperature were observed. The results showed that the combustion efficiency was influenced by particle size and volatile content of coal, the combustion efficiency of Chinese bituminous coal was over 99.5%. The unburned carbon particles from fly ash and bottom ash were a content 5~7% and 0.3%, respectively. The combustion efficiency with the mixture ratio 20% of bituminous coal and anthracite decreased over 5% because of the increase of entrained particles by a small average particle size of anthracite in the combustor. However, the outlet concentration of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ was not changed remarkably. The concentrations of the typical air pollutants such as $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ were 200~250 ppm($O_2$ 6%), 100~320 ppm($O_2$ 6%) respectively. The outlet concentration of $NO_x$ was decreased to 30~65% with $NH_3$ supplying rate of 2~13 l/min in SCR process. The $SO_x$ removal efficiency was up to 70% by in-furnace desulfurization using limestone with Ca/S molar of approximately 6.5. With wet scrubbing using $Mg(OH)_2$ as absorbent, the $SO_x$ removal efficiency reached 100% under near pH 5.0 of scrubbing liquid.

  • Urea-SCR technology is known as one of the powerful NOx reduction systems for vehicles as well as stationary applications. For its consistent and reliable operation in vehicle applications, however, the freezing and melting of the urea solution in cold environments have to be resolved. In this study, therefore, a numerical study of three-dimensional unsteady problems was analyzed to understand the urea freezing and heating phenomena and heat transfer characteristics in terms of urea liquid volume fraction, temperature profiles, and phase change behavior in urea solutions with time by using the commercial software Fluent 6.3. As a result, it was found that the freezing phenomenon proceeds with a phase change from the tank wall to the center, whereas the melting phenomenon occurs faster in the upper part of the storage tank by natural convection and in the adjacent part of the coolant pipe than in other parts. Furthermore, approximately 190 s were required to obtain 1L of urea solution using a 4-coiled coolant heater under conditions of $70^{\circ}C$ and 200 L/h.

  • The adsorption/desorption behavior and separation conditions of vanadium and tungsten ions were investigated using a gel-type anion-exchange resin. In the adsorption experiment with the initial acidity of the solution, the adsorption rate of vanadium was remarkably low in strong acids and bases. Additionally, the adsorption rate of tungsten was low in a strong base. An increase in the reaction temperature increased the adsorption reaction rate and maximum adsorption. The effect of tungsten on the maximum adsorption was minimal. The adsorption isotherms of vanadium and tungsten on the ion-exchange resin were suitable for the Langmuir adsorption isotherms of both the ions. For tungsten, the adsorption isotherms of vanadium and tungsten were polyoxometalate. Both ion-exchange resins were simulated using similar quadratic reaction rate models. Vanadium was desorbed in the aqueous solutions of HCl or NaOH, the desorption characteristics of vanadium and tungsten depended on the desorption solution, and tungsten was desorbed in the aqueous solution of NaOH. It was possible to separate the two ions using the desorption process. The desorption reaction reached equilibrium within 30 min, and more than 90% recovery was possible.

  • In this study, we investigated the separability of vanadium and tungsten from spent SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst leach solution by reduction of vanadium and solvent extraction using Alamine 336 and conducted experiments to optimize process conditions. It is difficult to separate vanadium and tungsten due to their similar chemical behavior, but tungsten can be selectively extracted from acidic solution when vanadium extraction is prevented by reducing anionic pentavalent vanadium to cationic tetravalent vanadium. The results showed that NaHSO3 was most suitable as a reducing agent, and the extraction efficiency of vanadium decreased and the separation efficiency increased as the amount of reducing agent added, reaction time, and temperature increased. When reducing NaHSO3 1.5 eq, 60 min, and 60℃, which are optimal conditions of reduction, vanadium and tungsten were effectively separated with vanadium extraction efficiency of 5.8%, tungsten extraction efficiency of 99%, and separation factor of vanadium and tungsten of 7,564.
