  • Most of reconstruction algorithms for the calculation of temperature distributions in CT (computed tomography)-TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) are based upon two-line thermometry method. This method gives unstable calculation convergence due to signal noise, bias error, and signal mis-matches. In this study, a new reconstruction algorithm based on cross-correlation for temperature calculation is proposed. The patterns of the optical signals at all wave lengths were used to reconstruct the temperature distribution. Numerical test has been made using phantom temperature distributions. Using these phantom temperature data, absorption spectra for all wave lengths were constructed, and these spectra were regarded as the signals that would be obtained in an actual experiments. Using these virtually generated experimental signals, temperature distribution was once again reconstructed, and was compared with those of the original phantom data. Calculation errors obtained by the newly proposed algorithm were slightly large at high temperatures with small errors at low temperature.

  • The thermal analysis of the hot roller in a dry film laminator is studied numerically by steady-state two-dimensional heat transfer. In the laminating process for PDP glass or PCB, the temperature distributions in a hot roller are presented considering the effects of the roller rotation speed and the inner and outer radii of the roller. The results show that the temperature distributions are strongly dependent on Peclet number. If Pe number becomes larger, the iso-thermal lines are more concentric about the rotating axis and the temperature difference on the hot roller surface decreases exponentially. It also shows that if the contact angle between the roller and the film becomes smaller the temperature difference becomes smaller. However, the changes of the rollers inner or outer radius have little effect on the temperature difference.

  • Temperature distribution measurements in the mockup apparatus of reactor vessel were performed to determine the effective thermal conductivity of porous media with different geometry and to obtain the experimental data for the heat transfer processes by natural convection occurring in the air duct. The temperature distributions at four separated sections with different arrangements of porous media have different slopes according to the geometrical configuration. From the measured temperature distribution, effective thermal conductivity have been derived using the least square fitting method. The test at air duct was performed to the high heat removal at 3.4kW/$m^2$ by the natural convection from the outer wall to the air. And also the temperature distributions in the air duct agree well with the 1/7th power-law turbulent temperature distribution. The obtained heat transfer data have been compared with the Shin's and Sieger's correlations.

  • To derive the distributions of electron density, temperature and gas-phase metal abundances within the Orion Nebula, we have performed a non-LTE analysis to the radio observations of hydrogen recombination lines and continuum flux over the frequency range from 0.1GHz to 100GHz. We have explicitly included the thermal balance condition in our analysis, hence our derived distributions have their internal consistencies. This enables us to derive the radial distribution of Oxygen and Nitrogen. The gas-phase concentrations of these cooling agents show about the solar values at the very central part of the nebula, then, decrease slowly outward, and finally become about one quarter of the solar values in the outer extended envelope. Such an outward decrease is interpreted as an outward increase of dust concentrations in the Orion.

  • In this study, electrical properties of polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE-RT) have been studied through an examination of AC conductivity, dielectric constant, and space charge distributions. A dielectric constant was investigated by Dielectric Analyzer (DEA). Measurements of space charge distributions for PE-RT were carried out using Pulsed Electroacoustic (PEA) techniques, and it was possible to observe the negative charge near the cathode overlapped with the positive induced charge peak, the polarity of which remains unchanged after a short circuit.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to understand the effect of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) spatial distribution on regional circulation. A three-dimensional non-hydrostatic atmospheric model RAMS, version 6.0, was applied to examine the impact of SST forcing on regional circulation. New Generation Sea Surface Temperature (NGSST) data were implemented to RAMS to compare the results of modeling with default SST data. Several numerical experiments have been undertaken to evaluate the effect of SST for initialization. First was the case with NGSST data (Case NG), second was the case with RAMS monthly data (Case RM) and third was the case with seasonally averaged RAMS monthly data (Case RS). Case NG showed accurate spatial distributions of SST but, the results of RM and RS were $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ lower than buoy observation data. By analyzing practical sea surface conditions, large difference in horizontal temperature and wind field for each run were revealed. Case RM and Case RS showed similar horizontal and vertical distributions of temperature and wind field but, Case NG estimated the intensity of sea breeze weakly and land breeze strongly. These differences were due to the difference of the temperature gradient caused by different spatial distributions of SST. Diurnal variations of temperature and wind speed for Case NG indicated great agreement with the observation data and statistics such as root mean squared error, index of agreement, regression were also better than Case RM and Case RS.

  • The aim of this paper is to determine temperature and stress distributions in a ceramic based on Partially Stabilized Zirconia coated steel piston crown by using plasma spraying for improving performance of a marine diesel engine. Effects of coating constituent and thickness on temperature and stress distributions were investigated including comparisons with results from an uncoated piston by means of finite element method namely ANSYS. Temperature developed at the coated surface is significantly higher than that of the uncoated piston. The maximum stress components occur between bond coat and adjacent ceramic layer. Provided that coating thickness is constant as 0.5 mm, when numbers of layers increase, magnitude of the normal stress decrease about 34.1% on the base metal surface according to uncoated piston, but the base metal surface temperature of the steel piston increase about 13.1%.

  • The present paper is devoted to the modeling method based on an averaging approach for thermal analysis of microchannel heat sinks subjected to the uniform wall temperature condition. Solutions for velocity and temperature distributions are presented using the averaging approach. When the aspect ratio of the microchannel is higher than 1, these solutions accurately evaluate thermal resistances of heat sinks. Asymptotic solutions for velocity and temperature distributions at the high-aspect-ratio limit are alsopresented by using the scale analysis. Asymptotic solutions are simple, but shown to predict thermal resistances accurately when the aspect ratio is higher than 10. The effects of the aspect ratio and the porosity on the friction factor and the Nusselt number are presented. Characteristics of the thermal resistance of microchannel heat sinks are also discussed.

  • For a new design of a automotive brake system, it appears to be very important to examine the temperature and thermal stresses distribution in the brake drum. In the direct measurement of them, however, a number of difficulties are involved. In this study, simulation on temperature and thermal stress distributions in an A1-MMC brake drum of a commercial vehicle during 15 braking operations was carried out using the finite element analysis(FEA1. The effect of a circumferential fin near open end of the brake drum on the temperature rise and stresses was also examined.

  • A two-dimensional model for anode-supported IT-SOFCs is proposed in order to accurately consider the heat and mass transport processes with a fully-developed axial velocity profile in channel flow. A comprehensive micro model is employed to describe the electrochemical reaction in anode and cathode of SOFCs. This paper investigates the effects of operational parameters (inlet temperature, the amount of flow rate, and air flow rate) including flow configurations (co-flow and counter-flow) on the current density and temperature distributions in the IT-SOFCs.
