EAST ASIA VLBI CONSORTIUM AND ITS COMMITTEE

  • We had the first committee meeting of the East Asia VLBI Consortium during the EAMA6 meeting held in Seoul. A VLBI network composed of telescopes in the East Asia region could provide extreme properties, and the coordination of them has been expected. The Committee of the East Asia VLBI Consortium is a standing committee to promote activities of the consortium, in which participating countries at present are China, Japan, and Korea over eight institutes/observatories. Here we introduce the Consortium and Committee.

  • Near infrared JHK magnitudes are presented for two hundred two high proper motion stars. We have observed high proper motion stars in the near-infrared bands(JHK) using the COB detector on the Kitt Peak 1.3m, 2.1m and 4m telescopes. The observations and data reduction procedures are described. The infrared color magnitude diagram and color-color diagrams for the program stars are presented.

  • We will discuss two-dimmensional spectrophotometry including long-slit spectroscopy and narrow-band imaging. The basic principles, applications, and techniques of observations and data reduction of spectroscopy and spectrophotometry for extended objects are described. This discussion will focus on practical long-slit spectroscopy using a Cassegrain spectrograph attached with 2 or 4m class telescopes and on imaging spectrophotometry using narrow-band interference filter sets. We will discuss scientific applications.

VSOP: SPACE VLBI PROJECT

  • The VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP) is a worldwide project of one radio telescope in space with many ground radio telescopes. The concerted space VLBI network enables us to reveal high resolution and high quality images of radio sources. The space radio telescope is anticipated to be launched in January/February 1997, and collaborative observations have been coordinated. The basic parameters of the system and present status are given.

On an N-body exoplanet simulator

  • We present a general N-body exoplanet simulator in anticipation of upcoming next generation telescopes. Illustrative examples are presented on P-type orbits in stellar binary stellar systems, that should be fairly common as in Kepler 16AB. Specific attention is paid to reduced orbital lfetimes of exoplanets in the habitable zone by the stellar binary, known from Dvorak (1986).

Wandering in the Universe

  • Gravitationally bound objects in the universe have been a main target of astronomers for long. However, some objects in the universe may want to be free, as we do. Recently we are witnessing the existence of some globular clusters wandering in the nearby universe. The nature and origin of these wandering globular clusters are not yet known. With the advent of giant telescopes they will be an excellent tool for various fields of research including first stars, star clusters, galaxies, and galaxy clusters.

Supernovae Research Using the KMTNet

  • We propose a program of conducting research of young supernovae in nearby galaxies using the KMTNet facilities. Thanks to the wide field ($2^{\circ}{\times}2^{\circ}$) with multiple filters and the continuous sky coverage using the three 1.6 m telescopes, the KMTNet can provide an unprecedented opportunity for studying supernovae. The primary program is twofold: it can be used as a discovery facility of young supernovae and also as a facility providing multi-band photometric data of unprecedentedly high cadence for supernovae light curves.

Hidden Monsters in the Submillimeter

  • Submillimeter Galaxies (SMGs) are high-redshift galaxies undergone extremely intense starbursts. Their UV radiation is heavily extinguished by dust and is re-radiated in the far-IR and submillimeter. They are thought to be progenitors of present-day giant elliptical galaxies and can be tracers of the highest density environment at high redshift. However, because of the low angular resolution of existing single-dish submillimeter telescopes, the progress in understanding the SMG population has been remarkably slow. In this talk, I will outline the outstanding issues in this field, and introduce our Submillimeter Array interferometric studies of SMGs. I will also discuss possible new research that will be enabled by next-generation instruments such as ALMA and LMT.
