  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of wedged insole and foot progression angle (FPG) on lateral thrust of knee in healthy subjects. Fifteen healthy male subjects were recruited from Suncheon First College, in Suncheon. The subjects randomly walked at the comfortable velocity under five conditions: bare footed, medio-lateral $10^{\circ}$ wedged insoles, toe-in and toe-out gait. The lateral thrust was measured by a accelerometer with telemeter during walking. Data was collected while each subject walked for about 10 gait cycle on a flat, level walkway at their normal speed. The middle three gait cycle were used for averaged peak value of lateral acceleration. The three averaged peak value of lateral acceleration were collected under each condition at heel strike. The results showed that averaged peak value of lateral acceleration increased significantly in medial wedged insole and toe-in gait and decreased significantly in lateral wedged insole and toe-out gait as compared with bare footed (p<.05). These results suggest that wedged insole as well as walking strategy, such as foot progression angle, may prevent progression of degenerative knee osteoarthritis.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented the system for telemetering ELF(Extremely Low Frequency) magnetic field intensity. The magnetic field measurement system used a 3-axis magnetic field sensor to measure the magnetic field with isotropy and the equalizer to compensate the frequency characteristic in band. By multiplexing three output signals of the magnetic field sensor in time domain, we got the uniform gain and frequency characteristic among three axes. This system was designed that the magnetic field measurement level range was $0.01{\sim}10.0\;uT$ and the measurement frequency band was $40{\sim}180\;Hz$. The control system would access to the magnetic field measurement system with RF and the maximum access distance was 1.0 km. We confirmed that the measurement level error of the fabricated system was within 5 %. The fabricated system was installed to a golf practice range where a high voltage power transmission line was crossed.

  • In order to telemeter the behavior and distribution of fishes. the telesounder was manufactured and it was examined to verify its performance and effects in the gape nets with wings located around Gokunsan islands. Yellow Sea. on August 8. 18~19 and September 8~9, 1994. The behavior of fish entering the net was observed with the buoy station at sea which was installed at the entrance of the gape nets with wing and its echosignal was transmitted remotely to the base station on ship at distance of about 1 km away from the buoy station at sea. The fishes catched by the gape nets with wings were 12 species and Anchovy(Engraulis japonica), Beka squid(Loligo beka), Herring(Harengula zunasi) was 95% of total catches. The images of color display monitor at the base station on ship were very well coincident with the records of fish finder from the buoy station located at sea. When the current velocity was less than 0.6 kt and slight fluctuation, the fishes entered into the gape net were much more in comparision with over 1.0kt and heavy fluctuation, and then the average swimming depth was about 4 m. The catches per one hauling was about 10~30 kg and when the current velocity was too weak and the current direction did not coincident with the direction of net or the current velocity was too strong, the catches was a few. It is concluded that telesounder system is very useful for investigating the distribution and the swimming behavior of fishes entering in the gape nets with wings.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the wireless pH telemetry lasting longer than 24 hours in the mouth to overcome the limits of conventional wire telemetry previously used for salivary and plaque pH measurement, and to assess its effectiveness. We developed a wireless pH telemeter which can measure and store the pH profile data during more than 24 hours. It was composed of intraoral part; pH sensor of antimony electrode, battery and microprocessor for data storage, and extraoral part; control/data receiver and data analyzing software which was newly made for this device. After inspecting wireless electrode for accurate measurement, it was attached to the removable intraoral appliance and delivered to the volunteer who was told to wear except brushing time, retrieved after 24 hours and finally the pH profile data was extracted and analyzed. When compared with conventional wire telemetry, this device showed similar results and induced less discomfort to examinees. The data showed pH changes at same time when examinees ate various scheduled foods and beverages. With this method it became possible to accurately measure pH changes within mouth for long time in accordance with individual's lifestyle, definitely reducing the discomfort inflicted to the examinees' life.

  • For the real-time control of a multi-purpose reservoir in case of a storm, it is absolutely necessary to forecast accurate flood inflows through a good rainfall-runoff model by calibrating the parameters with the on-line rainfall and water level data transmitted by the telemetering systems. To calibrate the parameters of a runoff model. the trial and error method of manual calibration has been adopted from the subjective view point of a model user. The object of this study is to develop a automatic calibration method using an optimization technique. The pattern-search algorithm was applied as an optimization technique because of the stability of the solution under various conditions. The object function was selected as the sum of the squares of differences between observed and fitted ordinates of the hydrograph. Two historical flood events were applied to verify the developed technique for the automatic calibration of the parameters of the storage-function rainfall-runoff model which has been used for the flood control of the Soyanggang multi-purpose reservoir by the Korea Water Resources Corporation. The developed method was verified to be much more suitable than the manual method in flood forecasting and real-time reservoir controlling because it saves calibration time and efforts in addition to the better flood forecasting capability.
