Theoretical Modeling of Pulsed Plasma Thruster Performance with Teflon Ablation

  • A performance analysis for a pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) has been conducted to predict the thrust and current change. Two models were implemented - a one-dimensional lumped circuit analysis model and the Teflon ablation model provided by Michael Keidar. The circuit model incorporating resistance and inductance models was adapted to predict the magnitude of the discharge current. Numerical simulations like current discharge rates with different voltages were reasonably well compared with experimental data. The effects of Teflon ablation on thruster characteristics were investigated.

  • 펄스형 플라즈마 추력기의 성능해석을 위해 Teflon의 승화와 이온화 모델링을 수행하였다. PPT 작동 시 발생하는 방전 전휴의 변화를 예측하기 위해 일차원 lumped circuit model을 적용하였으며 Mickeal Keidar가 제시한 테플론-플라즈마 온도에 따른 테플론 승화 모델을 적용하였다. Saha 방정식을 이용하여 테플론 구성 원소인 탄소와 불소분자의 이온화를 예측하였다. 프로그램 검증을 위해 선행실험 결과와 비교하여 유사함을 확인하였으며 PPT 작동 전압에 따른 전류 변화정도를 고찰하였다.

  • The pure PTFE nozzles may not be used in the GCB with very high interrupting capacity because of their excessive ablation and carbonization. But it is known that the nozzles with filler can show good performances at the extremely high inetrrupting currents of 50kA or 63kA. So, the manufacturing process of filled Teflon has been carefully studied. Then several specimens have been prepared for the experiments and analyses of their mechanical and electrical characteristics. Finally the high power arc tests have been conducted to the Teflon nozzle with filler of $Al_2O_3$. The results of experiments and tests show that the filled Teflon nozzle has superior mechanical characteristics, comparable electrical characteristics to a pure Teflon nozzle and a distinguished endurance against high power arcs.
