  • This study was intended to investigate the effect of mesiodistal crown widths of the anterior teeth on the incisor relationship and to determine whether incisor width ratio and anterior width ratio could be used to assess interarch tooth width harmony. From the casts taken from 63 subjects, 26 of open bite, 18 of deep bite and 19 of normal over bite with age of 17-20, mesiodistal crown widths of maxillary and mandibular 6 anterior teeth were measured with Boley gauge. On the basis of tooth measurements, anterior and incisor width ratio were calculated. The cephalograms were taken from same subjects to measure the degree of over bite and over jet and to compare the craniofacial bony structures between open bite, deep bite and normal over bite. Correlations among the anterior width ratio, incisor width ratio, over bite and over jet were calculated. The results were as follows. 1. There were no differences in mesiodistal widths of anterior teeth, incisor width ratio and anterior width ratio between open bite, deep bite and normal over bite. 2. The incisor width ratio and anterior width ratio can be useful in the assessment of tooth width harmony because the incisor width ratio and anterior width ratio were stable statistically and significantly correlated with each other. 3. Over bite and over jet were not correlated with incisor width ratio and anterior width ratio.

  • Single-layer winding configuration in a 12-slot 10-pole Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) has been adopting in electrical power steering (EPS) systems to get the high fault tolerance capability of the motor. However, the motor with single-layer winding has magnetic circuit saturations in the teeth, which deteriorates its performance. In this paper, we propose asymmetric teeth widths to get over the demerit, and analyze the effect of the teeth width ratio variations on the performances of the PMSM. As a result, we suggest the most valuable teeth width ratio for designing the PMSM with a single-layer winding configuration.

  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated the existence of golden proportion between the widths of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The clinical tooth width measurements were recorded with the digital vernier calipers on 576 patients of both sexes in the age group of 21 - 30 years. Flexible ruler was used to determine the width of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth on the patients by the same operator. The data obtained was statistically analyzed using paired student t-test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. The golden proportion was not found between the width of the right central and lateral incisors in 53% of women and 47% of men. The results revealed the golden percentage was rather inconstant in terms of relative tooth width. CONCLUSION. The golden proportion is an inappropriate method to relate the successive widths of the maxillary anterior teeth in Indian population.

  • PURPOSE. The maximum width between the mesial and distal labial transitional line angles, described as "esthetic width" herein, could significantly influence the visual perception of the teeth and smile. This study aimed to conduct biometric research on esthetic width and to explore whether regular distribution exists in the esthetic width of human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 4,264 maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth were measured using the Geomagic studio software program. The proportions of maxillary to mandibular homonymous teeth and proportions between the adjacent teeth were calculated. Bilateral symmetry and the correlation between the esthetic and mesiodistal widths were both accounted for during the measurement procedures. RESULTS. The mean esthetic widths were 6.773 ± 0.518 mm and 4.329 ± 0.331 mm for maxillary and mandibular central incisors, respectively, 5.451 ± 0.487 mm and 5.008 ± 0.351 mm for maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors, respectively, and 3.340 ± 0.353 mm and 5.958 ± 0.415 mm for maxillary and mandibular canines, respectively. Except for the mandibular canines, no significant difference in esthetic width was found among homonymous teeth from the same jaw. A high linear correlation was found between the esthetic and mesiodistal widths of the same tooth, except for the maxillary canines. Esthetic width proportions among different tooth categories showed some regular patterns, which were similar to those of the mesiodistal width. CONCLUSION. Esthetic width is regularly distributed among the teeth in the Chinese population. This could provide an important reference for anterior dental restorations and dimension recovery in esthetic reconstruction of anterior teeth.

  • Objective: The primary aim of the study was to generate new prediction equations for the estimation of maxillary and mandibular canine and premolar widths based on mandibular incisors and first permanent molar widths. Methods: A total of 2,340 calculations (768 based on the sum of mandibular incisor and first permanent molar widths, and 1,572 based on the maxillary and mandibular canine and premolar widths) were performed, and a digital stereomicroscope was used to derive the the digital models and measurements. Mesiodistal widths of maxillary and mandibular teeth were measured via scanned digital models. Results: There was a strong positive correlation between the estimation of maxillary (r = 0.85994, $r^2=0.7395$) and mandibular (r = 0.8708, $r^2=0.7582$) canine and premolar widths. The intraclass correlation coefficients were statistically significant, and the coefficients were in the strong correlation range, with an average of 0.9. Linear regression analysis was used to establish prediction equations. Prediction equations were developed to estimate maxillary arches based on $Y=15.746+0.602{\times}sum$ of mandibular incisors and mandibular first permanent molar widths (sum of mandibular incisors [SMI] + molars), $Y=18.224+0.540{\times}(SMI+molars)$, and $Y=16.186+0.586{\times}(SMI+molars)$ for both genders, and to estimate mandibular arches the parameters used were $Y=16.391+0.564{\times}(SMI+molars)$, $Y=14.444+0.609{\times}(SMI+molars)$, and $Y=19.915+0.481{\times}(SMI+molars)$. Conclusions: These formulas will be helpful for orthodontic diagnosis and clinical treatment planning during the mixed dentition stage.

  • Widths between the first permanent molars and the mesio-distal widths of the four anterior teeth were measured on 32 lower and 33 upper dental casts of young adults aged 18-25 yerars. The casts were grouped in five categories-two where no anterior crowding existed, and three in which varying degrees of crowding were present. Subjects with a difference between arch width and anterior tooth widths greater than 4mm in the upper arch, or 10mm in the lower arch, rarely had crowding. As arch width changes very little from age 7 onwards, measurements at this age may be used as a screening mechansim for future arch crowding.

  • The primary objective of this study was to make the prediction percentile tabulation of the sum of mesiodistal widths of the unerupted permanent canines and premolars derived from the sum of mesiodistal widths of the erupted permanent incisors in normal and crowding groups. Crowding group consisted of 85 pairs of dental casts (42 males and 43 females) with more than 4mm of crowding in anteriors. Normal group consisted of 109 pairs of dental casts (65 males and 44 females) with less than 1mm of spacing or crowding in anteriors. The mesiodistal crown diameters of permanent teeth were measured from the dental casts using the sliding calipers (Mitutoyo Co., Japan). From the study, the obtained results were as follows: There were not significant differences between male and female in both groups on the basis of the ratios between the sum of mesiodistal widths of incisors and the sum of mesiodistal widths of canines and premolars. There was not significant difference between two groups on the basis of the ratio between the sum of mesiodistal widths of mandibular incisors and the sum of mesiodistal widths of mandibular canines and premolars and was significant differences between two groups on the basis of the ratio between the sum of mesiodistal widths of mandibular incisors and the sum of mesiodistal widths of maxillary canines and premolars. There was significant difference between two groups on the basis of the ratio between the sum of mesiodistal widths of maxillary incisors and the sum of mesiodistal widths of mandibular canines and premolars. There was significant difference between two groups on the basis of the ratio between the sum of mesiodistal widths of maxillary incisors and the sum of mesiodistal widths of maxillary canines and premolars. The percentile prediction tabulations were made in an attempt to predict the sum of mesiodistal widths of the unerupted permanent canines and premolars derived from the sum of mesiodistal widths of the erupted permanent mandibular incisors in each group. • Guiding a tooth along an arch wire results in a counteracting frictional force among arch wires, bracket and ligature. This frictional forces should be eliminated or minimized when orthodontic teeth movement is being planned. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of width, cross-sectional forms and surface morphologies of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire after electropolising. Experimental variables included in this experiment were arch wire materials, current, electrolyte temperature and polishing time. Wire widths were measured by micrometer and cross-sectional forms and surface morphologies were examined with optical microscope and scanning electron microcope. The results were as follows: 1. The mean and standard deviation of widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire varying polishing time with condition of $249A/dm^2$ and $20^{\circ}C,\;249A/dm^2$ and, $332A/dm^2$ and $20^{\circ}C$ and $332A/dm^2$ and $250^{\circ}C$ were obtained. 2. With increasing polishing time, the widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire became decreased proportionally 3. The changes of widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire were statistically insignificant between $20^{\circ}C$ group and $25^{\circ}C$ group, but significant between $249A/dm^2$ group and $332A/dm^2$ group. 4 The cross-sectional forms of wire after electropolishing were not changed in stainless steel wire, and while it were changed to rounded corners in $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire. 5. The surface morphologies of wire after electropolishing were scratch-absent and more smoothened both in stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire.

  • This study was intended to develop the design theory of the threshing unit of a head-feeding rice combine. It may be applied for various combining capacities with different cutting widths and forward speeds. Design factors in the theoretical development are : (1) dimensions of the threshing drum, (2) tooth approching angle, (3) distance between the adjacent teeth on their spiral setting line, (4) number of spirals, and (5) total number of teeth on the drum. A computer simulation program was developed to predict the proper dimensions for the threshing drum and tooth arrangement. A simulation for the prospective combine with varied capacities was also demonstrated. The parameters analyzed in the developed design theory were shown to be consistent with those of existing combines.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain the lingual morphology (size, angulation, contour, eminence) of adults with normal occlusion in order to provide the basic data for lingual bracket and lingual arch form in Korean. The subjects (Male: 50, Female: 50) were selected who have normal occlusion and dental casts were prepared. Tooth size, angulation, arch width, horizontal contour, lingual eminence were measured for all 28 teeth both upper and lower arch. The results were as follows: 1. Measuring items of all individual teeth for adults with normal occlusion were obtained. 2. In comparison tests, there was a statistically difference between intermolar widths $(\underline{6}\;to\;\underline{6})$ before occlusal reduction and intermolar width $(\underline{6}\;to\;\underline{6},\underline{7}\;to\;\underline{7})$ after occlusal reduction only all the other measuring items showed no statistically differences. 3. There was small variation in horizontal contour of lingual surface on lower incisors and upper and lower bicuspids. The other teeth showed somewhat greater variations. 4. There was offset between canine and bicuspid in upper arch while there was no prominent offset in lower arch.
