  • Writing education for the students who major in natural sciences and engineering is concentrated on just writing in liberal education. So, this article study the condition and practical solution of writing education with a focus on natural sciences and engineering. This article researches the condition of writing in these majors of Seoul National University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. As a result, students keenly feel the necessity of writing in this major, but SNU does not offer such courses and few teachers that could teach it. To solve this, we propose that writing teachers of liberal education give feedback on the reports of the capstone research subject 3 or 4 times, which corresponds to 1 credit. This solution would be applicable to most universities in practice, though it is not final method.

  • In this study, we fabricated TiO2-decorated SnO2 nanorods (TSNRs) via glancing-angle deposition to achieve highly sensitive and selective CH3COCH3 detection. The gas-sensing properties of the TSNRs were systematically investigated, and the optimal sensing performance was achieved at 350℃ by 2-nm-thick TSNRs. When the sensors were exposed to 50 ppm of various gases (CH3COCH3, C2H5OH, C5H8, CH4, and CO), the 2-nm-thick TSNRs demonstrated a 4.6-fold increase in response (Ra/Rg-1=134) to CH3COCH3 compared with bare SnO2 nanorods (Ra/Rg-1=29.5) and exhibited excellent selectivity. In a high-humid environment (relative humidity = 80%), the 2-nm-thick TSNRs indicated a low theoretical detection limit of ≈5.31 ppb for CH3COCH3. These results suggest the significant potential of the proposed sensor for use in Internet-of-Things applications, particularly under extreme environmental conditions.

  • Telematic and new programming technologies support the increasing demand of education and training leading to the delivery of computer based learining systems open to distance and continuing education. Using LabVIEW, we designed and implemented an interactive learning environment for practice on electronics measurement methodologies. The environment provides remote access to real and simulated instrumentation and guided experiments on basic circuits. The environment is applied to the education and training on electronics for engineers in the field of semiconductor industry.

  • Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a major primary indoor air pollutant with various adverse effects on the human body, includingsuch as sick building syndrome, lung cancer, and nasal cancer. Therefore, gas sensors for effective HCHO detection detecting HCHO are crucial for maintaining a healthy indoor environments, and research is being conducted to develop high-performance sensors for this purpose. AnOne of the effective methods for enhancing the to enhance sensing properties is involves modifying the p-n heterojunction structure, which improves sensing through via electronic sensitization based on the expanded depletion region and chemical sensitization that dissociates specific gases. In this studyHerein, weWe fabricated NiO-decorated In2O3 NRs using an e-beam evaporator based on the glancing angle deposition technique by optimizing the NiO thickness (0, 1, 2, and 3 nm). When exposed to 50 ppm HCHO, NiO-decorated In2O3 NRs showed a 3.91%-fold enhancement in the gas response (Ra/Rg-1= 23.9) and a 41.47% faster response time (40.7 s) than-compared to bare In2O3 NRs with an extremely low theoretical detection limit of ≈approximately 9.3 ppb.

  • Objectives: Practice of dental technology poses great potential risk since the manufacturing processes are complex and involve dangerous devices and the students are asked to handle various materials in the casting and processing process. Lacking an understanding of the overall practice process, the beginners of practice are exposed to greater danger due to their unsafe attitudes and poor practice attitudes. This study set out to investigate the students of dental technology for their attitudes toward safety and their practice of safe actions during practice and to provide basic data for safety education to prevent any possible safety incidents during practice. Methodology: The subjects include total 408 dental technology majors in their sophomore and junior year. Based on literature study and previous studies, a structured questionnaire was made, distributed to the subjects right after practice, and gathered on the spot. The questionnaire contained total 60 items, and data were collected from April 20 to May 25, 2006. Results: Collected data were analyzed in frequency and $X(C)^{\sim}$-test using the SPSS 12.0 version. The analysis results show that the students believed that they could prevent safety accidents by following safety rules and guidelines as far as safety attitudes were concerned. However, they did nothing more than paying attention to many practice processes even though they thought they were dangerous. Conclusion: Overall the subjects practiced proper safety actions during practice with significance differences in their behavioral characteristics according to grade, gender and age. The significant differences according to grade seem to derive from safety education before practice, and those according to gender and age have more to do with individual actions and common sense according to gender and age than education. Thus practice teachers need to develop safety education materials for each practice process and provide systematic safety education before practice so that the students can practice safety actions.

  • This paper is on the analysis of the survey results for the recognition of the practical engineering education among the engineering educators and educatees including alumni. After performing the survey, we classify 4 forms of practical engineering education, company-oriented, major-field-oriented, basic-engineering-knowledge-oriented and others. Also we survey what are necessary for the students to get employed. The survey results indicate that the respondents understand the practical engineering education as company-oriented and many of them also recognized basic-engineering-oriented engineering education. For the employment, the professors and the alumni focus on the personal character but the students feel that major field knowledge and the English ability are vital to the employment tests. Concerning the opinion for the students on the shortage of ability as an engineer, the professors respond the major field knowledge while the students and the alumni answer the English ability. This research produces some interesting results on the direction of practical engineering education, but needs more detailed and extended survey and analysis.

  • Augmented reality technology can provide computer-generated information to user effectively, therefore many industries have been trying to adopt AR technology to own domain field. Shipbuilding and offshore industry are also trying to introduce the technology, especially in education field. We have already studied about transporter education system based on augmented reality to help understanding for non-expert engineers. Once our previous study was focused on improving of rendering quality, this paper focuses on effective interaction between engineers and system to more increase educational results.

  • Smart devices have a variety of affordances to foster meaningful learning in elementary school. For the design of smart learning environments, more research is needed to understand students' smart device usage and their perception of learning with smart devices. In order to capture smart device usage profiles among elementary school students in South Korea, this study carried out Latent Profile Analysis with three constructs: information search, communication, and study. Participants (n=253), who ranged from the fourth to the sixth grade students, were classified into three profiles of smart device usage: low-activity, communication, and high-activity groups. The smart device usage profiles varied depending on smartphone usage experience, and the profiles were significantly related with smart device addiction, not with smart device usage ability. Perceptions of smart education were also significantly associated with the profiles. The high-activity group showed more positive attitudes toward smart education than the others, but no significant difference was found in regard to negative attitudes. Based on the findings, this study discussed implications for the use of smart devices in elementary school.
