Analysis of Historical Documents from a Viewpoint of Paper Science

  • Restoration of historical documents and arts has become important to inherit cultural properties. Most of historical documents were recorded on paper. Therefore, restoration of ancient papers is demanded and techniques for this purpose must be developed and sophisticated. In our study, several nondestructive methods for analyzing ancient paper have been developed. Image analysis using fast Fourier transform with suitable modifications was applied to optical micrographs of traditionally-handmade Korean and Japanese papers. This analysis determines the angle and anisotropy of fiber orientation of paper surfaces. Fiber orientation of traditionally-handmade Korean and Japanese papers was found to show their own characteristics in accordance with the motion of a papermaking screen made of bamboo splints. Consequently, the information on fiber orientation was found to be possible to distinguish the flow-sheet forming typical of Japanese paper and still-sheet forming typical of Korean paper. Moreover, the anisotropy was always higher for the screen side than for the top side, thus meaning that surface fiber orientation is possible to distinguish the two sides of paper of which papermaking history is unknown. An application of this technique to actual historical documents evidenced that wrapping papers were used as envelops with a lateral side up, namely, after rotating 90 degrees. A variety of cultural habits in writing letters was revealed by discrimination of the two sides.

PVOH와 polyDADMAC 첨가에 의한 산화전분의 표면사이징 효과 변화 (Effect of PVOH or polyDADMAC Addition on Surface Sizing with Oxidized Starch)

  • High loading of printing and writing grades with fillers has many advantageous aspects in papermaking because it allows decreasing fiber use and reducing manufacturing cost. High loading technology, however, has some disadvantageous aspects as well. It decreases physical properties of papers, especially strength properties. The problem associated with high loading can be reduced by applying surface sizing starch solution onto paper surface. It is important to control the penetration of the surface sizing starch solution into paper web to obtain the desired property improvement. In this study, the effect of the addition of two polymers into starch solution on paper properties has been examined. PVOH and polyDADMAC were used as polymeric additives for surface sizing with oxidized starch. Viscosity of starch solutions and surface roughness of dried starch films on glass slides showed that some interactions between polymeric additives and oxidized starch have been occurred and the most extensive interaction with starch solution was obtained with high molecular weight polyDADMAC. Low molecular weight PVOH was most effective in improving folding endurance and internal bond strength. On the other hand, polymer addition showed no effect on surface strength of paper. This indicates that not the level of starch holdout but the bonding strength of starch itself has predominant influence on surface strength of paper.

  • 자연어 처리 기술을 접목한 컴퓨터 보조 언어 학습 연구가 진행되고 있지만, 기존 영문교정은 일반적인 영어 문장을 기반으로 연구되어, 격식을 갖춘 문체와 전문적인 기술 용어를 사용하는 학술 영문의 경우 그 특성을 반영하지 못한 교정 결과를 제공한다. 또한 문장의 문법적 완성도 향상을 위한 다수의 기존 연구는 교정을 통한 문장 전달력 향상의 한계점이 존재한다. 따라서, 본 논문은 전문적인 기술 용어 사용을 기반으로 문장의 명확한 의미 전달을 목적으로 하는 학술 영문을 위한 자동 교정 방법론을 제안한다. 제안 방법론은 오탈자 교정과 문장 전달력 개선 두 단계로 구성된다. 오탈자 교정 단계는 입력된 오탈자와 문맥에 적합한 교정 단어를 제공한다. 문장 전달력 개선 단계는 원문과 교정문의 쌍으로부터 학습할 수 있는 양방향 순환신경망 기계번역 사후교정 모델을 기반으로 문장의 전달력을 개선한다. 실제 교정 데이터를 이용한 실험을 수행하였으며, 정량적·정성적 분석을 통해 제안 방법론의 우수성을 검증하였다.

'주류파 언어이론'의 단면도 (A Cross-sectional View of the So-Called Mainstream Linguistic Theory)

  • The main driving force behind Chomskyan theory of language that is gaining ground under the title of the "minimalist program" has been the urge to reduce the variety of natural languages to a minimal number of theoretical concepts and devices and to formulate the strongest possible hypothesis about linguistic structures. This has led to a long series of proposals of ever greater abstractness, with concomitant modifications in a number of theoretical constructs. The minimalist approach is the latest development of these constant changes, for which there is really "only one computational system and one lexicon," the differences among languages being reducible to parametric variation in "nonsubstantive parts of the lexicon"(Chomaky 1995:169-70). Chomsky thus differs, now more than ever, from other linguists by his sweepingly programmatic, rather than empirical, approach to language. The proposals he makes are too complicated to discuss here in any technical details. We rather focus on a series of lectures delivered by an ardent adherent of the minimalist program, with the view to demonstrating how this theory may mislead and distort the whole prospect of linguistic investigation. The rationale of the so-called 'minimalism' per se will be called into question.

학습성과 수행평가를 위한 루브릭 개발과 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development and Application of Rubrics for Performance Assessment in Terms of Promoting Program Learning Outcomes)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide analytic rubrics for measuring teamwork(PO6), communication and presentation skills(PO7), and life-long learning(PO8) based on theoretical concepts of performance assessment and rubrics. Also, this study analyzed data about performance assessment and rubics from courses offered through college of engineering. Participants were 34 senior engineering students who took the course 'Technical writing and presentation'. In the second week of the course, students were given the pre-test instrument which was developed for measuring students' understanding of program outcomes for this study. After performing project activities using rubrics, students were encouraged to complete the post-test instrument and the reaction questionnaire during the ninth week. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 14.0 and Microsoft Excel. The research findings are as follows. First, to promote and evaluate program learning outcomes appropriately, performance assessment-based on rubircs should be implemented. Second, in the reaction questionnaire about the rubircs, students answered that using rubircs for performing the project was very useful for understanding the performance procedures and assessment criteria. Third, the mean of understanding of program outcomes of students in post-test was significantly increased than in the pre-test(p<.0001). From the findings, performance assessment and rubrics should be used as evaluation tools at course levels in terms of promoting program learning outcomes for engineering education.

도서관 정보이용교육: Cyber 강좌 개발과 실제 운영 (Cyber Learning Program of a University Library's Information Literacy Education: Its Development and Course Management)

  • 숙명여자대학교에서는 2004학년도 2학기부터 1학년 교양필수 과목인 "글쓰기와 읽기" 과목을 수강하는 모든 학생들이, "도서관 정보이용교육: Cyber 강좌"를 수강한 후 온라인 퀴즈문제를 풀고 과제물을 제출하여 인증을 받도록 하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 "도서관 정보이용교육: Cyber 강좌"의 개발 및 시행을 주관하고 있는 숙명여대 도서관의 강좌 개발배경 및 개발과정, 내용구성 및 구현방법 그리고 실제 운영현황을 서술함으로써, 이 cyber 강좌가 빠르게 그리고 성공적으로 숙명여대의 특화 프로그램으로 정착한 요인을 분석하였다. 또한 cyber 강좌 학습관리시스템(LMS: Learning Management System)의 제반 기술적 문제점과 cyber 강좌 시행의 실제적인 문제점 등을 분석하여 향후 개선책을 제시하였다.

  • Since 1995, One of the NGIS(National Geographic Information System) projects, the underground utilities project has been finished in 2003. The 19 cities in korea for this project will use underground utilities management system using underground utilities database focusing on water and sewage system. However, special expert, technical and experience problem in computer environment has not been had in working department for water and sewage management and maintenance for each local government. The management and maintenance of underground utilities database by manual method is getting lowered a data quality of underground utilities database because of the data omitting, error in writing and securing of the lasted database. Therefore, in this study, Application test for field workers using a mobile tool and environment analysis of wireless communication in Korea and application test of GPS receiver for mobile tools had been processed and made a mobile working environment. The efficient management and maintenance method for underground utilities database has been developed an off- line method for modification and update of database about general work which has a high working frequency because of the limitation of wireless communication environment Also, the emergency working has been applied for on-line method.

SEISMIC ISOLATION OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

  • Seismic isolation is a viable strategy for protecting safety-related nuclear structures from the effects of moderate to severe earthquake shaking. Although seismic isolation has been deployed in nuclear structures in France and South Africa, it has not seen widespread use because of limited new build nuclear construction in the past 30 years and a lack of guidelines, codes and standards for the analysis, design and construction of isolation systems specific to nuclear structures. The funding by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission of a research project to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and MCEER/University at Buffalo facilitated the writing of a soon-to-be-published NUREG on seismic isolation. Funding of MCEER by the National Science Foundation led to research products that provide the technical basis for a new section in ASCE Standard 4 on the seismic isolation of safety-related nuclear facilities. The performance expectations identified in the NUREG and ASCE 4 for seismic isolation systems, and superstructures and substructures are described in the paper. Robust numerical models capable of capturing isolator behaviors under extreme loadings, which have been verified and validated following ASME protocols, and implemented in the open source code OpenSees, are introduced.

  • 동시성을 보장하는 프로그래밍은 개발자에게 있어서 필수적이다. 이를 사용하지 않는다면 하드웨어 자체의 기술 발전이 있지 않는 한 프로그램의 속도 향상을 기대하기 힘들다. 뛰어난 동시성 코드를 지원하는 프로그래밍 언어로 go, elixir, scala 등이 있다. 수많은 유용한 라이브러리를 지원하는 파이썬 역시 asyncio나 coroutine과 같은 동시성 프로그래밍을 지원하고 있다. 본 지에서는 동시성과 병렬성의 개념을 정의하며, 파이썬에서 동시성 프로그래밍을 작성할 시에 유의해야 할 점에 대해 설명한다. 웹 데이터를 수집하는 크롤러를 동시성 코드로 작성하여 순차, 멀티스레딩 코드로 작성된 프로그램과 성능을 비교한다.

Imagism of The Early Poems of William Carlos Williams

  • This paper attempts, not to evaluate, but to describe William Carlos Williams' poetic techniques in accord with his poetic theory of Imagism; it does this by showing the early poetry in 1910's. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how Williams developed his poetic techniques with his theory of poetry. The progress of his poetic theory is drawn from the influence of another poet, Ezra Pound. William Carlos Williams' poetic development in Imagism threads the periods of his writing from the early 1910's to the early of 1920's. William Carlos Williams forms progressively the theory of his poetic technique of Imagism in this period. He treats the poems as images. In his theory of Imagism, his art continually demonstrates the development of poetic techniques by the help of other artists. This period represents Williams' attention to the essence of poetic elements: 'the thing itself.' All of these things in life come before us in his poetry in such a way as to be a technical process divided into the well-formed theory of poetry. The development of William Carlos Williams' poetic technique takes a particular pattern in order to achieve a theory of Imagism. At last, the steps of his poetic technique arrive at an organic unity of poetic theory in the early poetry of Williams.
