A cost-effective and simple culture method for primary hepatocytes

  • Hepatocytes, the major epithelial cells of the liver, maintain their morphology in culture dishes coated with extracellular matrix (ECM) components such as collagen and fibronectin or biodegradable polymers (e.g. chitosan, gelatin). In these coated dishes, survival of cells and maintaining of liver-specific functions may increase. The aim of this study was to determine a suitable, cost-effective and simple system for hepatocyte isolation and culture which may be useful for various applications such as in vitro toxicology studies, hepatocyte transplantation and bioartificial liver (BAL) systems. In order to obtain primary cultures, hepatocytes were isolated from liver by an enzymatic method and cultured on plates coated with collagen, chitosan or gelatin. Collagen, gelatin-sandwich and gelatin-cell mixture methods were also evaluated. Morphology and attachment of the cells were observed by inverted microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). An MTT assay was used to determine cell viability and mitochondrial activity.

Corrosion Protection Performance of PVDF/PMMA-Blended Coatings by Electrochemical Impedance Method

  • The effect of mixing ratio on the corrosion protection of carbon steel coated by a film composed of poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Surface crystallization behavior and thermal properties of the PVDF/PMMA coated carbon steel were evaluated using polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. A Maltese cross-pattern spherulite crystal was observed in the PVDF/PMMA coating film, which became more apparent with increasing PVDF content. The highest corrosion protection performance was achieved with 60 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel, and delamination and corrosion reactions were observed for 20 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel. Further, corrosion protection performance with an amorphous/crystal mixture (PVDF/PMMA, 60/40 (w/w)) was better than those observed in the amorphous domain and the perfect-crystal domain of the PVDF/PMMA blended coating system.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) / polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric composite films for nanogenerator devices were fabricated by spray coating method. When the CNT/PVDF mixture solution passes through the spray nozzle with small diameter by the compressed nitrogen gas, electric charges are generated in the liquid by a triboelectric effect. Then randomly distributed ${\beta}$ phase PVDF film could be re-oriented by the electric field resulting from the accumulated electrical charges, and might be resulted in extremely one-directionally aligned ${\beta}$ phase PVDF film without additional electric field for poling. X-ray diffraction patterns were used to investigate crystal structure of the CNT/PVDF composite films. It was confirmed that they revealed extremely large portion of the ${\beta}$ phase PVDF crystalline in the film. Therefore we could obtain the poled CNT/PVDF piezoelectric composite films by the spray coating method without additional poling process.

해상환경에서 MITL 시스템을 활용한 VTG 기반 기동표적 추적성능 개선 기법 (VTG based Moving Target Tracking Performance Improvement Method using MITL System in a Maritime Environment)

  • In this paper, we suggest the tracking method of moving multi-objects in maritime environments. The image acquisition is conducted using IR(InfraRed) camera sensors on an airborne platform. Under the circumstance of maritime, the qualities of IR images can be significantly degraded due to the clutter influence, which directly gives rise to a tracking loss problem. In order to reduce the effects from the clutters, we introduce a technical approach under Man-In-The-Loop(MITL) system for enhancing the tracking performance. To demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach based on VTG(Valid Tracking Gate), the simulations are conducted utilizing the airborne IR video sequences: Then, the tracking performances are compared with the existing Kalman Filter tracking techniques.

Monte Carlo analysis of LWR spent fuel transmutation in a fusion-fission hybrid reactor system

  • The aim of this paper is to determine neutronic performances of the light water reactor (LWR) spent fuel mixed with fertile thorium fuel in a FFHR. Time dependent three dimensional calculations for major technical data, such as blanket energy multiplication, tritium breeding ratio, cumulative fissile fuel enrichment and burnup have been performed by using Monte Carlo Neutron-Particle Transport code MCNP5 1.4, coupled with a novel interface code MCNPAS, which is developed by our research group. A self-sustaining tritium breeding ratio (TBR>1.05) has been kept throughout the calculations. The study has shown that the fissile fuel quality will be improved in the course of the transmutation of the LWR spent in the FFHR. The latter has gained the reusable fuel enrichment level conventional LWRs between one and two years. Furthermore, LWR spent fuel - thorium mixture provides higher burn-up values than in light water reactors.

  • Stricter environmental demands have increased the need to replace conventional C/D bleaching sequence by chlorine-free sequence. Permanganate is well known as a powerful oxidant and have been used industrially in variable fields. However, it has considered to be difficult to use permanganate as a bleaching reagent because of its strong oxidative effect decreasing the viscosity of pulps extremely. We have tried to use permanganate as a bleaching reagent for KP under the mild condition and it was clear that pernanganate oxidized lignin remained in pulps selectively and increased pulp brightness decreasing K number of pulps with small degradation of cellulose. We have employed the neutral condition in the permanganate bleaching process in this study. In this case, permanganate was converted to manganese dioxide after bleaching reaction. The manganese dioxide is remained in the treated pulp fibers because of its insolublity in water. So it was required to reduction the manganese oxide to manganese ion by using reductants with acid. In this paper, we proposed to use oxalic acid as a reducing reagent converting manganese oxide to manganese ion after bleaching reaction. Oxalic acid plays the role as a reductant and a acid, so post-treatment after bleaching became to be easy by using oxalic acid. On the study using lignin model compounds, it was clear that permaganate react with phenols firstly, after that oxalic acid reduce the manganese oxide to manganese ion in the mixture of permanganate, phenols and oxalic acid. Several lignin model compounds ($\textit{p}$-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillin, syringaldehyde, veratraldehyde) are selected to elucidate the effect of substituents on reaction rate and its mechanism with permanganate including oxalic acid in this study. Except for veratraldehyde, the rate of oxidative degradation of phenolic compounds by permanganate with oxalic acid are higher than neutral condition. Especially, the degradation rate of $\textit{p}$-hydroxybenzaldehyde are strongly dependent on pH of reaction mixture. On the other hand, the degradation rate of veratraldehyde are decreased with decreasing pH and main degradation product is veratric acid. This result indicate that pH of bleaching liquor should be kept over 2 to degrade of non-phenolic lignin in the pulps effectively in permanganate bleaching.

고화준설토의 역학적 특성과 식생 발아 특성 (Mechanical and Germination Characteristics of Stabilized Dredged Soil)

  • 본 논문에서는 준설토를 친수공간 조성과 같이 친환경적으로 재활용하기 위하여 고화준설토를 제작하였고, 역학적 특성과 식생 발아 특성을 분석하였다. 사용된 고화제는 고로슬래그 미분말을 기본재료로 고칼슘플라이애시 및 알칼리 복합 활성화제를 이용하여 제작한 고화제(Non Sintering Binder, NSB)이며, 비교 분석을 위해 포틀랜드 시멘트도 사용하였다. 고화준설토의 지반공학적인 개량 효과를 검토하기 위하여 유동성 시험, 단위중량 시험, 일축압축시험 등과 같은 다양한 실내 시험을 실시하고, 환경에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위하여 중금속 용출과 식생 발아 실험을 실시하였다. 일축압축강도를 통하여 고화제의 함량이 증가할수록 모든 고화준설토의 강도가 증가하는 경향을 볼 수 있으며, NSB 고화준설토가 OPC 고화준설토보다 높은 강도를 나타냈다. 식생발아 실험 결과 OPC 고화준설토보다 NSB 고화준설토에서 발아 시기와 발아율이 우수하게 나타났다. 고화준설토의 pH와 7일 강도가 클수록 발아율과 발아 시기는 감소하는 경향을 보인다.

일액형 알코올형 실리콘 실란트의 제조 및 접착 물성 (Preparation and Adhesion of One Part Room Temperature Curable Alkoxy Type Silicone Sealant)

  • 실리콘 실란트는 실리콘폴리머, 가소제(plasticizer), 가교제(crosslinker), 충전제(filler), 촉매(catalyst), 첨가제(additive) 등으로 제조할 수 있으며, 실란트의 실용특성에는 각 제조변수의 종류와 혼합비율이 크게 영향한다. 알코올형 실리콘 실란트는 최근들어 환경적인 이점 때문에 그 사용이 늘고 있다. 본 연구에서는 상온경화형 일액형 알코올형 실리콘 실란트를 PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane)의 점도를 달리하여 제조한 후 그 접착특성을 평가하였다. 또한 점도 20000과 80000 cps의 PDMS를 혼합 사용하고 가교제, 가소제, 촉매 등의 함량을 변화시켜가면서 실란트를 제조하고 접착특성을 평가하였다. 또한 각 실란트의 제조과정 중의 반응온도 변화를 기록하여 적절한 제조조건을 얻도록 하였다. 실란트 제조시 혼합물의 온도가 $40^{\circ}C$ 이하가 되도록 제조변수의 조성을 조절하여 적합한 물성의 실란트를 제조할 수 있었다. 피착재에 따라 접착력이 달라졌으며, 유리/유리 > 유리/알루미늄 > 알루미늄/알루미늄 순으로 나타났다. 실란트의 신장률은 폴리머 점도와 가소제의 함량 증가에 따라 증가하였으며, 강도는 가교제와 가소제 함량 감소와 촉매함량 증가에 따라 증가하였다.

현대건축의 표피에서 나타나는 다질성의 특성 연구 (A Study on the Multiplicity of Architectural Skin in Contemporary Architecture)

  • Development of digital technology, which is individualizing and differentiating the world, makes time and space facilitate multi-layering in the contemporary society. It gives a large influence on the contemporary architecture that inducing the visual and spatial experience. Also, It generates new images through the skin of architecture, which implies the contingent and fluid characteristics. These phenomenon show that various parameters are working on the architectural skin simultaneously. Such complexity make the structure of open space and diversity that are homogenized and synchronized. Like this, the architectural skin implies 'multiplicity': qualitative difference which is enable to change and create new images. This characteristic generates instant images changing variously and semantics constantly by the function of skin as a filter. Also, the architectural skin integrates or relocates of relationships between the various information and elements appearing in contemporary society in order to escape the customary relationship between internal and external. Furthermore, the inside and outside of the mixture as a collection of sense has been recognized as one image. This image of mixture consists of one unified continuous integration and extend the meaning of a fluid interface not just surface of the building. The skin of the contemporary architecture is very technical, so its meaning and role is expanded as a complex that exchange interaction. This means that the skin itself has functional elements of the integrated multiple skin to assist. Also it can form a multi-layered relationship and act as a wide range of interfaces depending on the perception of the observer. Therefore the multiplicity of the architectural skin indicates the importance as a boundary that generate images of new life through the sensory perception and implicit force. And it shows potential as the intermediary to try to communicate.

유기농업자재를 이용한 인삼 탄저병의 친환경 방제효과 (Control Efficiency for Ginseng Anthracnose by Eco-Friendly Organic Materials)

  • This study was conducted to select and develop effect of eco-friendly organic materials for the eco-friendly prevention of Anthracnose occurred in the ginseng. Anthracnose on ginseng is occurred by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and the crop damage is severe especially from July to August after rainy season. The test results showed that control effect by test products materials on the three years ginseng and four years ginseng field was lower in eco-friendly organic materials than that of chemical pesticide. However, the control effect of bordeaux mixture was higher with 71.3% and 73.8% levels than those of mineral matter, microbial agent, and developed plants extract mixtures (Eugenol, Curcumin, Wood vinegar, etc). On the other hand, three types of developed plants extract mixtures (3 types) showed control effect in a range of from 58.1% to 63.6% against Anthracnose which was higher as compared with plant extract alone and sodium silicate regardless of ages of ginseng. The results of this study would attribute in verifying the control effect of eco-friendly materials against Anthracnose for ginseng through investigating antimicrobial compounds contained in the plants body. Also, it would be used as control method against Anthracnose occurred in ginseng by judging the right control time through monitoring occurrence of disease.
