  • This paper recommends to teach technical writing as a part of the curriculum of engineering design courses. Some features of both engineering design and keystone design course as well as capstone design course for engineering students are studied before the relationship of those features with written communication are investigated. After the characteristics of collaborative writing are reviewed, some aspects of integration of teaching technical writing into engineering design courses are evaluated. Technical writing for engineering students is best taught by collaborative writing approach in engineering design courses.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme for matching specified areas in a satellite image, which is a very efficient method because it can be effectively applied to images that have various features. These features may include different spatial resolution and brightness; sometimes they may different geometrical property. The proposed method can be applied to some application fields such as mosaicing of satellite imagery, GCP matching.

  • This paper maps the overall features of technology valuation through a conceptional framework. The framework is composed of 4 dimensions such as basic, compositional, technical and behavioral dimension. At basic dimension, what is value and what is technology are discussed. The valuation of technology or the valuation of other assets are compared at the compositional dimension. The techniques of the valuation of technology and its difference with the valuation methods of other assets are examined at the technical dimension. The effectiveness, possibility and error of valuation are discussed at the behavioral dimension.

  • Light intensity variation is one of the key factors which affect the accuracy of vehicle face re-identification, so in order to improve the robustness of vehicle face features to light intensity variation, a Nonnegative Matrix Factorization model with the constraint of image acquisition time difference is proposed. First, the original features vectors of all pairs of positive samples which are used for training are placed in two original feature matrices respectively, where the same columns of the two matrices represent the same vehicle; Then, the new features obtained after decomposition are divided into stable and variable features proportionally, where the constraints of intra-class similarity and inter-class difference are imposed on the stable feature, and the constraint of image acquisition time difference is imposed on the variable feature; At last, vehicle face matching is achieved through calculating the cosine distance of stable features. Experimental results show that the average False Reject Rate and the average False Accept Rate of the proposed algorithm can be reduced to 0.14 and 0.11 respectively on five different datasets, and even sometimes under the large difference of light intensities, the vehicle face image can be still recognized accurately, which verifies that the extracted features have good robustness to light variation.

  • Background: Methodologies for a series of radiological consequence assessments show a distinctive difference according to the design principles of the original nuclear suppliers and their technical standards to be imposed. This is due to the uncertainties of the accidental source term, radionuclide behavior in the environment, and subsequent radiological dose. Both types of PWR and PHWR are operated in Korea. However, technical standards for evaluating atmospheric dispersion have been enacted based on the U.S. NRC's positions regardless of the reactor types. For this reason, it might cause a controversy between the licensor and licensee of a nuclear power plant. Materials and Methods: It was modelled under the framework of the NRC Regulatory Guide 1.145 for light-water reactors, reflecting the features of heavy-water reactors as specified in the Canadian National Standard and the modelling features in MACCS2, such as atmospheric diffusion coefficient, ground deposition, surface roughness, radioactive plume depletion, and exposure from ground deposition. Results and Discussion: An integrated accident consequence assessment code, ACCESS (Accident Consequence Assessment Code for Evaluating Site Suitability), was developed by taking into account the unique regulatory positions for reactor types under the framework of the current Korean technical standards. Field tracer experiments and hand calculations have been carried out for validation and verification of the models. Conclusion: The modelling approaches of ACCESS and its features are introduced, and its applicative results for a hypothetical accidental scenario are comprehensively discussed. In an applicative study, the predicted results by the light-water reactor assessment model were higher than those by other models in terms of total doses.

  • In stamping-die manufacturing, the first step is to build die patterns for lost wax casting process. A recent industry trend is to manufacture the die pattern using 3-axis NC machining. This study identifies technical considerations of the pattern machining caused by the characteristics of Styrofoam material, and proposes technical methods related to establishing a process plan and generating tool paths for optimizing the pattern machining. In this paper, the process plan includes the fellowing three items: 1) deter-mining a global machining sequence-a sequence of profile, top, bottom machining and two set-ups, 2) extracting machining features from a pattern model and merging them, and 3) determining a machining sequence of machining features. To each machining feature, this study determines the machining start point, generates the approach tool path, and proposes a tool path linking method fur reducing the distance of the cutter rapid motion. Finally, a smooth tool path generation and an automatic feedrate adjustment (AFA) method are introduced far raising the machining efficiency.

  • The main purpose of the article is to study the features of innovation and project management. The rapid growth of scientific and technological progress in our time is leading to such profound changes that a passive, slow response to the development of science and technology leads to a growing backlog. That is why the main direction of efficient production should be a constant striving to improve product quality, timely replacement of the assortment, minimization of inventories, and ensuring the flexibility and mobility of technological processes. Based on the results of the study, the main features of innovation and project management were characterized.
