  • The present study reports mysids on sandy beaches along the eastern coast of Korea. Samples were collected with a dip net or a sled net in sandy shores in April 1995 and November 2006. 9 species representing five genera were identified from the present study. Of these, the genus Nipponomysis including N. lingvura, N. ornata, and N. imparis, and Acanthomysis nakazatoi were newly recorded from the Korean waters. Morphological descriptions and taxonomic key to species were given. The present study reports that 45 species belonging to 15 genera from the Korean waters have been recorded.

  • Usnea Adans. is a somewhat rare lichen in South Korea, and, in nearly two decades, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study has been conducted. This study was based on the specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at the Korean Lichen Research Institute, and the samples were identified using information obtained from recent literature. In this study, a total of eight species of Usnea, including one new record, Usnea hakonensis Asahina, are documented. Detailed descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics are provided. A key to all known Usnea species in South Korea is also presented.

  • Collema Weber ex F.H. Wigg is scarcely scattered throughout South Korea. However, a detailed taxonomic or revisionary study has not been carried out for almost two decades. The present study was based on specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at Korean Lichen Research Institute, which were identified using recent literature. In this revisionary study, a total of sixteen species of Collema, including five new records, C. furfuraceum var. luzonense, C. pulchellum var. subnigrescens, C. rugosum, C. subconveniens, C. tenax, and one variety C. leptaleum var. leptaleum were documented. Further, detailed descriptions of each species and their morphological, anatomical and chemical characteristics and a key to all known Collema species of South Korea were reported.

  • We performed a taxonomic study on Korean freshwater bryozoans with the materials collected from 70 localities during 2014 to 2016. A total of 14 Korean freshwater bryozoans are reported through this study. Among them, three Plumatellids, Plumatella fungosa (Pallas, 1768), P. repens (Linnaeus, 1758), and P. reticulata Wood, 1988, are newly added to the Korean fauna. Three species were redescribed with only their statoblasts: Lophopodella carteri, Plumatella rugosa, and Stephanosella hina (Seo, 1998; 2005; Chae et al., 2016). Their colonies were found in Korea for the first time in this study. Since Fredericella sultana, Hyalinella punctata, and Plumatella casmiana were reported from Korea (Toriumi, 1941), neither statoblast nor colony has been found, but we observed them. Living colonies of six species were photographed in the field. Furthermore, the statoblasts of nine species, including three species new to the Korean fauna, were also documented using scanning electron microscopy.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the differences of the conchiolin layer, prismatic layer and nacreous layer deposited within the shell of the freshwater family Unionidae. shether they possess species-specific characteristics and differences of the microstructure of these layers, A Scanning electron microscopic obwervations were conducted on seven species. The results indicate that all species possess thin and homogeneous layers within the periostracum. The prismatic layers of these species were composed of ednsely packed prisms. The prismatic layers of the shell in six species were typical shape of prisms. especially Inio douglasiae and Lamprotual gottschei. But, in Unio douglasiae sinuolatus, it was irregular and oblique prism shape. The nacreous layer of weven unionids characterized by possession of three types by lamillae shape: thin and homogeneous on genus Anodonta(0.4 pm size of lamella), Unio(1.3pm) and Lamprotual (1.7pm), homogeneous in shape and irregular in size of lamillae in Lanceolaria(1.0 pm)and irregulat in shape and size in Solenaia(0.2-0.4 pm). The microstructure of the naceous layer may be useful as a taxonomic character at the generic level.

  • $Lobaria$ (Schreb.) Hoffm is a common foliose lichen genus found on the Korean Peninsula, yet until now, no revision study has been done on this genus. After careful examination of specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI), nine distinct species of $Lobaria$ were confirmed. Morphological characteristics such as the presence or absence of isidia, or whether or not the surface was ridged or smooth, and chemical characteristics such as the result of the medulla reaction were of significant importance in the differentiation of species. Here, we provided detailed descriptions together with a key to all the known Korean species.

  • This taxonomic study sought to detect and describe diatom species not yet recorded in Korea. The study was conducted at three islands located off the western coast of Korea, Wido Island near Buan, Wonsando Island near Boryeong and Dekjeokdo Island near Incheon. Diatoms were collected from the bottom, stone, macrophytes and other substrates in water bodies, which are affected by seawater. Fifteen naviculoid taxa are described. Of these, 13 are novel to Korea. The genus Navicula has nine species; Navicula alineae Lange-Bertalot, N. ammophila Grunow, N. cariocincta Lange-Bertalot, N. elegantoides Hustedt, N. longicephala Hustedt, N. normaloides Cholnoky, N. notha Wallace, N. novaesiberica Lange-Bertalot, N. riediana Lange-Bertalot & U. Rumrich. The genus Craticula has four species; Craticula buderi (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot, C. halophila (Grunow) D.G. Mann, C. riparia (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot and C. riparia var. mollenhaueri Lange-Bertalot.

  • Oncholaimid nematode, Oncholaimus secundicollis Shimada, Kajihara and Mawatari, 2009, is firstly reported based on a comparative morphological study. The present specimens of O. secundicollis are collected from rocky intertidal seagrass on the eastern coast of Korea. Oncholaimus secundicollis is distinguished from all of its congeners by the following combination of morphological characteristics: buccal cavity large with thick cuticular wall and three teeth, left subventral tooth larger than right subventral or dorsal teeth, and the presence of two remarkable precloacal papillae with nine pairs of cloacal setae and single ventral tail papilla with two pairs of short setae. In this study, we provide taxonomic description and illustration of unrecorded species of the genus Oncholaimus.
