  • We investigated the taxonomic status of the Korean populations of Eurema hecabe (Linnaeus, 1758) based on morphology and nuclear triose phosphate isomerase (Tpi). Up to now, the Korean population of E. hecabe was classified into E. mandarina (de l'Orza, 1869) based on morphological characteristics. A previous study raised the possibility of the Jeju-do population to be E. hecabe based on the color of forewing's fringe. However, morphological examination showed that the Korean population found in southern areas (Gyeonsang and Jeolla provinces), including Jeju-do is E. mandarina. In particular, the external morphology of autumn seasonal type of the Korean population was almost same as the Japanese mainland population, which is known as E. mandarina. Furthermore, sequence analysis of Tpi gene from nine individuals of E. mandarina collected in South Korean localities including Jeju-do clearly showed that all Korean specimens truly belong to E. mandarina.

  • In 2021, during a survey of cnidarian fauna around Geomundo located in the Dadohaehaesang National Park in the South Sea, complete pinnated hydroid colonies attaching on vertical rocky surface at depth of 45 m were collected by SCUBA diving. Through taxonomic examination, unrecorded species, Sertularella acutidentata Billard, 1919, is newly added to the hydrozoan fauna of Korea. Recently, taxonomic position of the genus Sertularella has been relocated into the new family Sertularellidae Maronna et al., 2016 and six species from Korean waters have been synonymized or transferred to new genera. Thus, a total of 17 species belonging to genus Sertularella, including the species reported in this study, have been reported in Korean waters so far.

  • Archaea substantially contribute to global geochemical cycling and energy cycling and are impacted by land-use change. However, the response of archaeal communities to a change from upland field to paddy field has been poorly characterized. Here, soil samples were collected at two depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) from one upland field and six paddy fields that were established on former upland fields at different times (1, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 years before the study). Barcoded pyrosequencing was employed to assess the archaeal communities from the samples at taxonomic resolutions from phylum to genus levels. The total archaeal operational taxonomic unit (OTU) richness showed a significant positive correlation with the land-use change duration. Two phyla, Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota, were recorded throughout the study. Both the relative abundance and OTU richness of Euryarchaeota increased at both depths but increased more steadily at the subsurface rather than at the surface. However, these data of Crenarchaeota were the opposite. Additionally, the archaeal composition exhibited a significant relationship with C/N ratios, total phosphorus, soil pH, Olsen phosphorus, and the land-use change duration at several taxonomic resolutions. Our results emphasize that after a change from upland fields to paddy fields, the archaeal diversity and composition changed, and the duration is an important factor in addition to the soil chemical properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a new method of analysis focusing on interconnections between species rather than traditional biodiversity analysis, which represents ecosystems in terms of species and individual counts such as species diversity and species richness. This new approach aims to enhance our understanding of ecosystem networks. Utilizing data from the 4th National Natural Environment Survey (2014-2018), the following eight taxonomic groups were targeted for our study: herbaceous plants, woody plants, butterflies, Passeriformes birds, mammals, reptiles & amphibians, freshwater fishes, and benthonic macroinvertebrates. A co-occurrence frequency analysis was conducted using nationwide data collected over five years. As a result, in all eight taxonomic groups, the degree value represented by a linear regression trend line showed a slope of 0.8 and the weighted degree value showed an exponential nonlinear curve trend line with a coefficient of determination (R2) exceeding 0.95. The average value of the clustering coefficient was also around 0.8, reminiscent of well-known social phenomena. Creating a combination set from the species list grouped by temporal information such as survey date and spatial information such as coordinates or grids is an easy approach to discern species distributed regionally and locally. Particularly, grouping by species or taxonomic groups to produce data such as co-occurrence frequency between survey points could allow us to discover spatial similarities based on species present. This analysis could overcome limitations of species data. Since there are no restrictions on time or space, data collected over a short period in a small area and long-term national-scale data can be analyzed through appropriate grouping. The co-occurrence frequency analysis enables us to measure how many species are associated with a single species and the frequency of associations among each species, which will greatly help us understand ecosystems that seem too complex to comprehend. Such connectivity data and graphs generated by the co-occurrence frequency analysis of species are expected to provide a wealth of information and insights not only to researchers, but also to those who observe, manage, and live within ecosystems.

  • Probabilistic Ecological risk assessment (PERA) is extensive approach to qualify and quantify risk on the multi species based on species sensitivity distribution (SSD). As a while, deterministic ecological risk assessment (DERA) considers the comparison of predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) and predicted exposure concentration (PEC). DERA is used to determine if there is potential risk or no risk, and it doesn't consider the nature variability and the species sensitivity. But PERA can be more realistic and reasonable approach to estimate likelihood or risk. In this study, we compared PERA used in developed countries, and proposed PERA applicable for the Korean water environment. Taxonomic groups were classified as "class" level including Actinopterygill, Branchiopoda, Chlorophyceae, Maxillapoda, Insects, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Secernentea, Polychaeta, Monocotyldoneae, and Chanophyceae in this study. Statistical extrapolation method (SEM), statistical extrapolation method $_{acutechronicratio}$ ($SEM_{ACR}$) and assessment factor method (AFM) were used to calculate the ecological protective concentration based on qualitative and quantitative levels of taxonomic toxicity data. This study would be useful to establish the PERA for the protection of aquatic ecosystem in Korea.

  • A study on the presence of benthic dinoflagellates in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Jeju Island, Korea was conducted during 2011 and 2012. Identification and taxonomic observations were made of the benthic dinoflagellate samples using light and epifluorescence microscopy. Thirty-seven dinoflagellate taxa belong to five orders, nine families, 18 genera and 30 species, which are new records for Korean waters, were detected in this study. The detailed nomenclature, references, distribution, and illustrations are presented here. The commonly occurring genera were Amphidinium, Coolia, Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum, and Thecadinium. Among the recorded species, 26 were found only in sand sediment, seven in macroalgal samples, and four were found in both sand and macroalgal samples. Of the 37 species, nine were potentially toxic. These results suggest that diversified benthic dinoflagellates including several potentially toxic species occur in sand sediment and macroalgae in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Jeju Island. The morphological features of the identified species were more or less similar to observations made by previous studies in Korea and elsewhere. The presence of known toxic species may indicate a potential risk of toxicity in the marine ecosystem of Jeju Island. The present study can be helpful for further detailed taxonomic, toxicological, molecular phylogenetic studies and may help in the management and conservation of Jeju Island's marine ecosystem.

  • Molecular approaches, internal transcribed spacer(ITS) sequences of ribosomal DNA, and Universal Rice Primer Polymerase Chain Reaction(URP-PCR) were used to investigate the genetic diversity, taxonomic complexity, and relationships of Trichoderma species in mushroom farms. Forty-one isolates of 13 Trichoderma spp. were used in this study and clustered into eight groups. The DNA fingerprint patterns and ITS1 region sequence alignment data showed similar results, but not in some species, such as T. virens, T. atroviride, T. harzianum, and T. aureoviride. Results of this study have proven that the morphology-based taxonomic system has some limitations in terms of classification. The data obtained in this study would be a good index for classifying indistinguishable Trichoderma strains.

  • Monthly changes in communities of benthic macroinvertebrates collected in the Suyong and Soktae stream of the Suyong river were investigated from September 1993 to August 1994. The total number of species collected during the study period ranged from seven to seventy six species according to pollution levels at the study sites. Monthly changes in species richness appeared differently in different taxonomic assemblages. In chironomids differences in species richness responding to different levels of saprobity were shown consistently as time proceeded. In Ephemeroptera species richness at the relatively clean sites responded sensitively to slight enrichment. In connection with species richness the monthly changes in densities in taxonomic assemblages also appeared to effectively represent environmental impacts. Species diversity generally represented the pollution status also, however the monthly variations at the study sites appeared to be relatively high. The clustering analysis showed that the communities collected at polluted sites were grouped closely, and the communities collected at the relatively clean sites were clustered to the same stream although the degree of community association was low, Through the Principal Component Analysis, the impact of Pollution was reflected in a great degree in overall community variations.
