  • The structure of phytoplankton community was studied for one year round at 6 stations in the Beopsu Marsh, Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. One hundred seventy-eight taxa (69 taxa belonging to Chlorophyta, 55 taxa to Bacillariophyta, 33 taxa to Cyanophyta, 15 taxa to Euglenophyta, 2 taxa to Rhodophyta, 2 taxa to Dinophyta and 1 taxon to Xanthophyta) were observed. Phytoplankton bloom occurred at the staions 2, 3 and 4 where waters were polluted by sewage and treated water of purification plants from the vicinity. The species diversity index of phytoplankton was the lowest (0.66) in November at the station 3, which the station showed the most eutrophic water due to the diverse pollutants from surroundings of the marsh. For the whole seasons, Fragilaria sp. and Euglena sp. appeared in pollutant water at the station 3, while Cyclotella sp. and Pinnularia sp. inhabited in relatively clean water at the station 5. To reserve the natural treasure, the wetland should be more specially managed by a local governing institution.

  • Investigations were performed on the flora, community composition and ecology of the diatoms collected from the water system in the suburbs of Kyungju city from June, 1981 to May, 1982 and from August to September, 1983. Total taxa of 157 were identified as diatoms consisting of 2 orders, 5 suborders, 8 families, 12 subfamilies, 26 genera, 97 species, 54 varieties and 6 forma. Among them 69 taxa were found as unreported ones in Korea. By the creteria of adaptability of these taxa to organic pollution in water, the taxa could classified as 8 of tolerant, 34 of indifferent and 115 of intolerant taxa.

Specific plant species by floral region were total 15 taxa; Prunus yedoensis in class V, 2 taxa (Carex idzuroei, Magnolia kobus) in class IV, 2 taxa (Monochoria korsakowi, Poncirus trifoliata ) in class III, 10 taxa (Sagittaria aginashi, Salix glandulosa, Clematis brachyura, Nymphoides peltata, etc.) in class I. The naturalized plants in this site were 13 families, 29 genera, 43 species, 1 varieties, 44 taxa and naturalization rate was 11.5% and based on the list of an ecosystem disturbance plants, 3 taxa were recorded in the studied areas : Paspalum distichum, Solanum carolinense, Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior. The hydrophytes was listed 31 taxa of 15 families, 20 genera, 29 species, 2 varieties and Eleocharis mamillata var. cyclocarpa, Penthorum chinense, Soirodela polyrhiza were recorded in Osongjae, Sagittaria aginashi, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, Scirpus triqueter, Monochoria korsakowi, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea were recorded in Ogongjae. • The vascular plants in Jeju composed of 21 families 62 genera, 190 species, 7 varieties with 197 taxa in Pteridophyta, 3 families 5 genera, 7 species, 3 forma with 10 taxa in gymnosperm (Coniferophyta) and 143 families 703 genera, 1,622 species, 114 varieties and 47 forma with 1,783 taxa in Endospermae. The total number of taxa was 1,990 consisting 167 families, 770 genera, 1,818 species, 121 varieties and 50 forma. Three families, 4 genera 4 species and 1 variety in Pteridophyta and 1 family, 1 genus I species, 1 forma of Coniferophyta were endemic to Jeju. Five families, 8 genera and 8 species in the Monocotyledonae of Endospermae and 23 families, 32 genera, 21 species, 16 varieties and 7 forma and 44 taxa in Cholipetalae, and 9 families, 24 genera, 12 species, 13 varieties and 7 forma, total 32 taxa in Sympetalae were endemic to Jeju. Total 90 taxa with 41 families, 69 genera, 46 species, 29 varieties and 15 forma were drawn up as endemic plants in Jeju. As the numbers show on, Jeju has more biodiversity especially plant diversity than any other places in Korea. It was an important region in regard to geographical position. The rarity on plants from Jeju has been assessed based on the IUCN red list categories and criteria at both regional and global levels. There was one species in each extinct (EX) and extinct in the Wild (EW). The EX and EW species were Rhododendron saisiuense Nakai (Ericaceae) and Asplenium antiquum Makino (Aspleniaceae), respectively. Three taxa, Rhododendron dauricum L. (Ericaceae), Lycopodium sieboldii Miq., and Lycopodiella cernua (L.) Serm (Lycopodiaceae) were species that is extinct in the region (RE). Sixty-one taxa were critically endangered (CR), 13 were endangered (EN), and 83 were vulnerable (VU) at regional level. The taxa listed on a Red List corresponds 26.9% of total taxa in Jeju. At global level, there were 19 taxa in CR, 4 in EN, and 1 in VU (Vulnerable) as the category of threat. The rest taxa (133 taxa) were classified as Least Concern (LC). According to the results of the assessment, conservation measures must be taken for total of 157 species that were categorized in threaten including one of EX, one of EW and three extinct in the region immediately. Of 157 species, 61 were CR, 13 are EN and 83 were VU.
