  • Purpose: This paper considers the issue of corporate tax avoidance (CTA) in the distribution of the tax burden across companies in Vietnam because the high level of CTA leads to unfairness in taxation. In particular, we aim for discussing the way to measure the extent of CTA and explore the determinants of CTA that reflect the features of high-tax risk-taking companies. Research design, data and methodology: The study investigates factors influencing the CTA behavior of legal entities listed on the Vietnam stock market between 2012 and 2018 to fill the empirical research vacuum in the country. we employ the dynamic GMM estimate method. Interestingly, CTA is considered through three approaches, including two effective-tax-rate-based methods and especially accrual earnings Results: The results highlight tax - accounting book disparities have significant effects on CTA. In addition, firm size, net asset value, debt leverage, and tax-accounting books are related to CTA. Conclusions: Tax avoidance is shown to have a positive correlation with financial distress in this case. The higher a company's capital adequacy ratio, the fewer tax avoidance opportunities it has. The paper draws some recommendations to deal with tax avoidance that improves the fairness in the distribution of the tax burden among corporations.

  • This paper empirically examines whether the tax effect of indirect tax reductions such as reserves deductible and direct tax reductions such as tax credits and tax reductions is significantly associated with value relevance. That is, direct and indirect tax reductions bear upon an increase in accounting earnings and decrease in cash outflows through reducing tax burdens. The empirical result in this paper shows that firm value is significantly related to the tax effect of reserves for business improvement and other tax reserves, which comprise parts of the book value of equity through tax benefits, but is not significantly related to the tax credits and reserves deductible as necessary expenses that comprise accounting earnings. This paper also analyzes the difference in value relevance between direct tax reductions and indirect tax reductions(That is, Hypothesis No.5). We find that there are no significant differences between direct tax reductions and indirect tax reductions. Because the regressive coefficients of direct tax reductions and indirect tax reductions are not significantly.

To test this hypothesis, we used the samples of the auditors' tax services selected from firms listed on the securities markets of Korea. We use the methodology of regression analysis. The major findings are as follows. First, TAX_SER has a positive relationship with the firm value. The knowledge and experience resulting from the offer of audit services are applied to the process of offering tax services to enhance the professionalism of audit and tax services. Second, the analysis was performed to determine if the type of tax services from auditors and the type of listed markets make any difference in the effect of TAX_SER1 on TQ; the study has revealed that only tax adjustment has a positive effect on TQ in the type of tax services. Depending on the type of listed markets, TAX_SER1 has been found to have a differential effect on the firm value. The results show that investors might decide to invest in those firms where the auditor could increase the firm value through audit and tax services.

  • The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the key factors affecting tax compliance among Vietnamese firms in Vietnam. We employ both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative research has been carried out through focus group discussions with ten chief accountants and tax officers. Quantitative research has been conducted through interviews with 200 firms (chief accountants or financial directors) in Vietnam. Analysis of the model includes the following stages: (i) Cronbach's test for reliability of the scale, (ii) exploratory factor analysis (EFA), (iii) confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and (iv) structural equation model (SEM). The results of the research show that voluntary tax compliance is directly affected by the three factors of audit probability, corporate reputation and business ownership. The probability of audit and severity of sanctions have the strongest impact on tax compliance. Therefore, the tax authorities need to strengthen the inspection of tax declarations, tax payments and tax refunds of firms. The paper confirms that enforced tax compliance is directly affected by the three factors of audit probability, sanction severity and social norms. Voluntary compliance and compulsory compliance have an effect on tax compliance, though voluntary compliance has a more powerful impact.

  • This paper reconsiders the empirical evidence of the relationship between tax treaties and FDI using U.S. outbound FDI to 78 countries over the period of 2007-2018. Unlike previous studies, we explicitly consider differences in the tax environments of recipient economies, including their tax-haven status, transfer pricing rules, CFC rules and anti-avoidance regulations, in our estimations. Our results confirm the importance of controlling for country-specific tax environments, especially the tax-haven status and transfer pricing rules. We find that tax treaties positively contribute to FDI inflows in developing countries, while they have no statistically significant impacts on OECD countries. Recently signed tax treaties still foster FDI but less than older ones do. Finally, our results indicate, all other things being equal, that the weaker the transfer pricing regulations, the greater the amount of U.S. direct investment into a non-OECD economy.
