  • Background and Objectives: Detection of auditory signals may be improved when maskers far from the frequency of the target signal are coherently amplitude-modulated. This improvement of signal detection is called comodulation masking release (CMR). In the CMR experiments, flankers have been usually arranged symmetrically. In practice, we will be confronted with a problem by using symmetric flankers due to the limited output of clinical audiometers, especially at high-frequency. We aimed to check whether flanker arrangement has any effect on the amount of CMR, especially when there is no flankers with a frequency higher than the signal. Subjects and Methods: Eighteen normal hearing listeners ranging in age from 20 to 46 years old participated. Symmetric (2-2) and asymmetric (3-1 and 4-0) flankers were used and then the amount of CMR compared among them. Results: Our results showed in the same numbers of flankers, there were no statistically CMR differences between symmetric and asymmetric arrangement. Also when we did not have a flanker at a frequency higher than the signal and all flankers were placed below the signal, there was no statistically difference with the symmetric arrangement. Conclusions: The asymmetry of the flankers and also omitting the flankers with a frequency higher than the signal, have no effect on CMR results. We concluded that CMR can be considered by using clinical audiometer.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified iterative pre-whitening projection statistics (MIPPS) scheme for improving multi-target detection performance in non-homogeneous clutter environments. As a non-homogeneity detection (NHD) technique of space-time adaptive processing algorithm for airborne radar, the MIPPS scheme improves the average detection probability of weak target when multiple targets with different reflection signal intensities are located in close range. Numerical results show that the conventional NHD schemes suffers from the masking effect by strong targets and clutters and the proposed MIPPS scheme outperforms the conventional schemes with respect to the average detection probability of the weak target at low signal-to-clutter ratio.

  • This paper deals with the method to classify the aircraft target by analyzing its JEM signal. We propose the method to classify the engine model by analyzing JEM spectrum using the harmonic frequency mask generated from the blade information of jet engine. The proposed method does not need the complicated logic algorithm to find the chopping frequency in each rotor stage and the pre-simulated engine spectrum DB used in the previous methods. In addition, we propose the method to estimate the precise spool rate and it reduces the error in estimating the number of blades or in calculating the harmonic frequency of frequency mask.

  • In RADAR and SONAR detection systems, noise environment can be classified into homogeneous and heterogeneous environment. Especially heterogeneous environments are modelled as target masking and clutter edge. Since the variability-index (VI) CFAR, a composed CFAR algorithm, dynamically selects one of the mean-level algorithms based on the VI and the MR (mean ratio) test, it is robust to various environments. However, the VI CFAR still suffers from lowered detection probabilities in heterogeneous environments. To overcome these problems, we propose an improved VI CFAR processor where TM (trimmed mean) CFAR and a sub-windowing technique are introduced to minimize the degradation of the detection probabilities appeared in heterogeneous environments. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method has the better performance in terms of detection probability and false alarm probability compared to the VI CFAR and single CFAR algorithms.

  • This paper compares and evaluates model performance from two perspectives according to the learning target and network structure for training Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based speech enhancement models in the frequency domain. In this case, spectrum mapping and Time-Frequency (T-F) masking techniques were used as learning targets, and a real network and a complex network were used for the network structure. The performance of the speech enhancement model was evaluated through two objective evaluation metrics: Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) and Short-Time Objective Intelligibility (STOI) depending on the scale of the dataset. Test results show the appropriate size of the training data differs depending on the type of networks and the type of dataset. In addition, they show that, in some cases, using a real network may be a more realistic solution if the number of total parameters is considered because the real network shows relatively higher performance than the complex network depending on the size of the data and the learning target.

  • Antennas of the near field detection radar require little distortion in time domain caused by multi reflections between feed and open ends of the antenna, so that help to discriminate the target signal from the clutters. The resistive loading techniques have been used to reduce the late time distortions in order to prevent masking of target. In this paper, we design a microstrip antenna with two arms having sloted lines, which have inductance loading effect. Implemented antenna shows better performance on reducing late-time ringing, and the peak value of the received signal becomes 45% greater than the one by the antenna with two non-sloted lines.

  • This paper is second part on the auditory thresholds and fish behaviors to the underwater sounds for luring of target species at the set-net in the coast of Cheju. In order to obtain the critical ratio of yellow tails(Seriola quinqueradiata) and the emission level of underwater sound for luring of them, we make experiments to measure the auditory threshold of them using conditioning with electric shock. In state that the white noise with 10dB higher sound pressure level than ambient noise is emitted, the auditory thresholds of yellow tails are measured with 100~116.5dB and they are higher than those in state of no emission of white noise by the masking effects of it. Although sound pressure level of background noise go down, the auditory thresholds go up with frequency above than 300Hz.The critical ratio of yellow-tails in frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 800Hz are 46dB, 40dB, 50dB, 52dB, 60dB, 70dB respectively. The sound pressure level of which the signal sound is recognized by yellow tails under the ambient noise is above 100dB and the critical ratio of them is above 40dB.

  • This paper deals with a noise reduction algorithm which uses the binary masking approach in the time-frequency domain to improve speech intelligibility. In the binary masking approach, the noise-corrupted speech is decomposed into time-frequency units. Noise-dominant time-frequency units are removed by setting the corresponding binary masks as "0"s and target-dominant units are retained untouched by assigning mask "1"s. We propose a binary mask estimation by comparing the local signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to a threshold. The local SNR is estimated by a training-based approach. An optimal threshold is proposed, which is obtained from observing the distribution of the training database. The proposed method is evaluated by normal-hearing subjects and the intelligibility scores are computed by counting the number of words correctly recognized.

  • In this study, software-based countermeasures against a side-channel cryptanalysis of the Rabbit stream cipher were developed using Moteiv's Tmote Sky, a popular wireless sensor mote based on the Berkeley TelosB, as the target platform. The countermeasures build upon previous work by improving mask generation, masking and hiding other components of the algorithm, and introducing a key refreshment scheme. Our contribution brings improvements to previous countermeasures making the implementation resistant to higher-order attacks. Four functional metrics, namely resiliency, robustness, resistance, and scalability, were used for the assessment. Finally, performance costs were measured using memory usage and execution time. In this work, it was demonstrated that although attacks can be feasibly carried out on unprotected systems, the proposed countermeasures can also be feasibly developed and deployed on resource-constrained devices, such as wireless sensors.
