  • This study aims at investigating the effect of the baffle height on the liquid sloshing in the three-dimensional (3D) rectangular tank. In order to simulate the 3D incompressible viscous two-phase flow in the 3D tank with partially filled liquid, the present study has adopted the volume of fluid (VOF) method based on the finite-volume method which has been well verified by comparing with the results of the relevant previous researches. The ratio of the baffle height ($h_B$) to filling level (h) has been changed in the range of $0{\leq}h_B/h{\leq}1.2$ to observe the effect on the impact loads on the side wall and free surface behavior. Generally, as baffle height increases, the impact pressure on the wall decreases and the deformation of free surface becomes weaker. However it seemed that a critical ratio of the baffle height existed to reveal the lowest impact pressure on the wall. Consequently, $h_B/h=0.8$ among $h_B/hs$ considered in the study showed the lowest impact pressure.

  • The practice of the construction and management of the underground petroleum storage facilities in Korea was investigated extensively, and the problems were identified. The advanced technologies in the U.S.A was comparatively studied. Considering the effectiveness of leak prevention and technology applicability, the following measures were suggested. To prevent corrosion of the tank, a clad tank, an interior-lining tank, or a double-wall tank was appropriate and appeared to be most cost effective. For piping, non-metalic material was suggested. To prevent spill, a catchment basin can be effective. For monitoring of leak, construction of more than one of one or combination of an automatic leak-detection device, a vapor-detection system, a ground water-monitoring system, and a double-wall detection system was recommended.

  • In plant industry, sulfur storage tank is made of steel and annular plate is connected with concrete foundation of ring wall type by anchor bolt. Due to keep sulfur at high temperature in tank by coil, sulfur storage tank is expanded larger than another tank stores fluid at room temperature. Generally, structural design of tank foundation is performed analysis with loading of temperature gradient between inner and outer surface, this method can't consider the phenomenon that load is intensively transferred to concrete foundation at anchor bolt. This means that temperature load is underestimated and causes crack of concrete near anchor bolt. In this study, evaluation formula considering temperature load transfer mechanism through anchor bolt is proposed and load acting on concrete foundation is rationally decided. For this purpose, it is analyzed variation of thermal load per various anchor bolt number using finite element model including tank annular plate and anchor bolt. Solution is proposed as specified term combining result of analysis and theoretical solution for evaluating load transferred by anchor bolt. For confirmation of validation of proposed formula, it is applied in design of sulfur storage tank at plant site, it shows that the formula can be practically applied.

  • In this paper, the IR and compass sensors for the underwater system were used. The walls of the water tank have been recognized and avoided treating the walls as obstacles by the bio-mimetic underwater robot. This paper is consists of two parts: 1.The hardware part for the IR and compass sensors and 2.The software part for obstacle avoidance algorithm while the bio-mimetic robot is swimming with the obstacle recognition. Firstly, the hardware part controls through the RS-485 communications between a microcontroller and the bio-mimetic underwater robot. The software part is simulated for obstacle recognition and collision avoidance based upon the data from IR and compass sensors. Actually, the bio-mimetic underwater robot recognizes where is the obstacle as well as where is the bio-mimetic robot itself while it is moving in the water. While the underwater robot is moving at a constant speed recognizing the wall of water tank as an obstacle, an obstacle avoidance algorithm is applied for the wall following swimming based upon the IR and compass sensor data. As the results of this research, it is concluded that the bio-mimetic underwater robot can follow the wall of the water tank efficiently, while it is avoiding collision to the wall.

  • A typical viable technique to decrease the seismic response of liquid storage tanks is to isolate them at the base. Base-isolation systems are an efficient and feasible solution to reduce the vulnerability of structures in high seismic risk zones. Nevertheless, when liquid storage tanks are under long-period shaking, the base-isolation systems could have different impacts. These kinds of earthquakes can damage the tanks readily. Hence, the seismic behaviour and vibration of cylindrical liquid storage tanks, subjected to earthquakes, is of paramount importance, and it is investigated in this paper. The Finite Element Method is used to evaluate seismic response in addition to the reduction of excessive liquid sloshing in the tank when subjected to the long-period ground motion. The non-linear stress-strain behaviour pertaining to polymers and rubbers is implemented while non-linear contact elements are employed to describe the 3-D surface-to-surface contact. Therefore, Nonlinear Procedures are used to investigate the fluid-structure interactions (FSI) between liquid and the tank wall while there is incompressible liquid. Part I, examines the effect of the flexibility of the isolation system and the tank aspect ratio (height to radius) on the tank wall radial displacements of the tank wall and the liquid sloshing heights. Maximum stress and base shear force for various aspect ratios and different base-isolators, which are subjected to three seismic conditions, will be discussed in Part II. It is shown that the composite-base isolator is much more effective than other isolators due to its high flexibility and strength combined. Moreover, the base isolators may decrease the maximum level pertaining to radial displacement.

  • Using the finite element analysis, this paper presents the strength safety of a side wall of an outer tank and a roof structures in a full containment LNG storage tank system. The outer tank structure in which is constructed with a prestressed concrete is forced by internal hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures of a leaked LNG and an external wind pressure including a typhoon one. The FEM computed results show that the ring beam between a side wall of an outer tank and a roof structure supports most of the internal and the external loads. This means that the design point of the outer tank system is a ring beam structure and the other one is a center part of the roof structure. In this FE analysis model of a full containment LNG tank system, the outer tank and the roof structures are safe for the given combined loads such as an internal leaked LNG pressure and an external typhoon pressure.

  • This study carried out an evaluation of an oil tank that was defective in structure. This paper is divided into two sections which are analysis for the working process and suggestion for improving on the structure of the oil tank. As stated above, it has three major factors as to an improvement, such as the life cycle of structure (especially physical life cycle), and the many factors related to the duration years of the oil tank and analysis result. Based on this study, the improvement of oil tank was established. For example, the ground investigation needs before design and construction of oil tank, and constructing the oil tank by retaining wall type tank is good for maintenance. Also, it is important that the system for drainage is related to maintenance.

  • Tong-young LNG tank is a LNG storage tank of 140,000 kl, and it is composed of Bottom Slab(Annular, Center), Outer Wall, Ring Beam and Roof. Generally, when concrete temperature arise, the complex thermal stress of inner and outer part can cause serious thermal crack and damage at structure. So in this paper, for the control of this thermal crack, we did the concrete mix design with the base of fly-ash 30% substitute at binder, and through the computer modelling at Bottom Slab(Annular, Center), Outer Wall, Ring Beam and Roof, we studied the probability of thermal crack by thermal crack index.

  • The theory is based on two thermodynamic equations for the air mass in the air column and bydrodynamic equation for the relation between the response of the air in the water column and the incident wave. The numerical model is experimented in a two dimensional water tank and the caisson model with sloped front wall is tested in the large towing tank.

  • Seismic fragility curves of concrete cylindrical tanks are determined using the finite element method. Vulnerabilities including sloshing of contents, tensile cracking and compression failure of the tank wall due to bending are accounted for. Effects of wall flexibility, fixity at the base, and height-diameter ratio on the response are investigated. Tall, medium and squat tanks are considered. The dynamic analysis is implemented using the horizontal components of consistent earthquakes. The study shows that generally taller tanks are more vulnerable to all of the failure modes considered. Among the modes of failure, the bending capacity of wall was shown to be the critical design parameter.
