  • The study was carried out to evaluate odor emission during storage time and quality of liquid slurry fertilizer along with three storage container types installed at farmer's fields in Cheorwon. Liquid slurry manure stored in the liquid-circulated or the air-injected tank was very homogeneous in concentration of nutritional elements because of well mixing operation, while nutritional concentration of the manure stored in the non-treated tank was significantly different from top to bottom in the tank, which may bring about partially irregular growth of plant after its application. The potential capacity of offensive odor emitted from liquid slurry manure stored in the liquid-circulated or the air-injected tank was much lower than that emitted from manure stored in the non-treated tank. Low potential capacity may less emit offensive odor after application of piggery liquid slurry on the field. The efficiency in oder to reduce odor emission from liquid manure was slightly higher in the liquid-circulated tank than the air-injected tank

  • It is very important to understand the flow characteristics for design of the hull forms with better resistance and propulsive performance. The experimental results explicating the local flow characteristics are also invaluable for validation of the CFD codes for both inviscid and viscous flow calculations. This paper describes the techniques and equipment developed for the measurement of wave pattern on the free surface and local mean velocity fields around the stern of the modern container ship with bow and stern bulbs in KRISO towing tank. The results contained in this paper can provide the valuable information on the flow characteristics of the modern commercial hull form of small block coefficient with high speed.

  • The purpose of present study is to find an appropriate hull shape of a container ship which can operate along the coast and through canals. A 200TEU class container ship is designed with dimensional modifications of an existing 140TEU container ship which is a domestic coastwise vessel. For the fore-body shape including bulbous bow. additional modification is done by changing the sectional area curve and frameline shape using the data of series resistance test. The model tests are performed in the towing tank to measure total resistance sinkage and trim of the model. And a finite-difference method based on MAC method is utilized to analyze the flow field around the ships in deep and restricted water. From the result of model test and numerical analysis, the resistance characteristics of the designed hull form are predicted.

  • In this study, a numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the phase change behavior of a liquid hydrogen storage container. The effects of gravity direction and hydrogen filling rate on boil-off gas (BOG) in the storage container were investigated. The study employed the volume of fluid, which is the phase change analysis model provided by ANSYS Fluent (ANSYS, Canonsburg, PA, USA), to investigate the sloshing phenomenon inside the liquefied hydrogen fuel tank. Considering the transient analysis time, two-dimensional simulation were carried out to examine the characteristics of the flow and thermal fields. The results indicated that the thermal flow characteristics and BOG phenomena inside the two-dimensional liquefied hydrogen storage container were significantly influenced by changes in gravity direction and hydrogen filling rate.

  • In the framework of the European project SAMOSAFER, this numerical study focuses on some thermal aspects of the Emergency Draining Tank (EDT) located underneath the core of a Molten Salt Reactor. In case of an emergency, this tank passively receives the liquid fuel salt and is designed to ensure a subcritical state. An important requirement is that the fuel does not overheat to maintain the EDT Hastelloy container integrity. The present EDT is based upon a group of hexagonal cooling assemblies arranged in a hexagonal grid and cooled down thanks to conduction through the inert salt layer up to an air flow in charge of removing the heat. This numerical thermal study relies on a conjugated heat transfer analysis coupling a Finite Element solid thermal code (SYRTHES) and two instances of a Finite Volume CFD codes (Code_Saturne). Calculations on an initial design suggest that a simple center airpipe flow is likely to not sufficiently cool the device. Alternative solutions have been evaluated. Introduction of fins to enhance the heat transfer do not bring a noticeable improvement regarding maximum temperature reached. However, a solution in which the central pipe air flow is replaced by several cooling channels located closer to the fuel is investigated and suggests a better cooling.

  • The drilling mud is essentially used in oil and gas development. There are several roles of using the drilling mud, such as cleaning the bottomhole, cooling and lubricating the drill bit and string, transporting the cuttings to the surface, keeping and adjusting the wellbore pressure, and preventing the collapse of the wellbore. The fragments from rocks and micro-sized bubbles generated by the high pressure are mixed in the drilling mud. The systems to separate those mixtures and to keep the uniformly maintained quality of drilling mud are required. In this study, the simulation is conducted to verify the performance of the mud tank's agitation capacity. The primary role of the mud tank is the mixing of mud at the surface with controlling the mud condition. The container type is chosen as a mud tank pursuing efficient transport and better management of equipment. The single- and two-phase simulations about the agitation in the mud tank are performed to analyze and identify the inner flow behavior. The convergence of results is obtained for the vertical- and axis-direction velocity vector fields based on the grid-dependency tests. The mixing time analysis depending on the multiphase flow conditions indicates that the utilization of a two-stepped impeller with a smaller size provides less time for mixing. This study's results are expected to be utilized as the preliminary data to develop the mixing and integrating equipment of the onshore drilling mud system.

  • In order to ensure the structural dynamic stability of moving liquid-storage containers, the flow motion of interior liquid should be appropriately suppressed by means of mechanical devices such as the disc-type elastic baffle. In practice, the design of a suitable baffle requires a priori the parametric dynamic characteristics of storage containers, with respect to the design parameters of baffle, such as the installation location and inner-hole size, the baffle number, and so on. In this paper, we intend to investigate the parametric effect of the baffle parameters on the transient dynamic behavior of a cylindrical fuel-storage tank in an abrupt vertical acceleration motion. For this goal, we employ the ALE (arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) kinematic description method incorporated with the finite element method.

  • A series of model tests on a container ship in waves was executed at the Experimental Towing Tank of Ship Research Station, KIMM. This paper presents the results of resistance, self-propulsion, propeller open-water and ship motion tests in regular head waves. Firstly, the experimental results of ship motion measured on a towed model and a self-propelled model were compared with those of Japanese results showing fairly good agreements. Secondly, the results of resistance and propulsion tests were analyzed and the data of added resistance, thrust increase, torque increase, revolution increase and self-propulsion factors in waves were presented. Also the diffraction force measured on a fixed model in waves was analyzed. Finally, this report shows the propeller characteristics in calm water based on propeller immersion and in regular waves based on wave length.

  • In the present study, the flow field in a square container with various comer rounding is studied to investigate drain flow characteristics. An attempt has been made to understand the mechanism that is responsible for vortex suppressing by the different radius of rounding at the comer. For this purpose, flow visualization studies using PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) are employed to determine the flow patterns in a square tank. Results are obtained when there is no draining and with draining. The flow field is visualized both in horizontal and vertical planes.

  • The dynamic response characteristics of a rectangular fluid container are investigated by using finite element method. The fluid is assumed to be linear-elastic, inviscid and compressible. A displacement-based fluid finite element was employed to allow for the effects of the fluid. A typical rectangular fluid container, which is used in recent studies, is considered for the numerical analysis. The North-South component of El Centro Earthquake records is used as input ground acceleration. Rigid and flexible fluid containers solutions are obtained for the chosen sample tank. Hydrodynamic pressures and sloshing motions are determined using Lagrangian fluid finite element. The results obtained from this study are compared with the results obtained by boundary-finite element method (BEM-FEM) and requirements of Eurocode-8. Based on the numerical analysis, some conclusions and discussions on the design considerations for rectangular fluid containers are presented.
