With the development of tangible interface in recent years, the interest in interactive exercise games to improve health-related physical fitness has been increased. We believe that this kind of serious game should provide not only motion sensing of the action required to play sports but also a specific effectiveness of exercise. This paper will show how a serious exercise game affects theirs heart rate and preference. For the experiments, we used an exercise game named GalaxyBike for aerobics exercise which is developed by the Interaction Media Research Center of Hoseo University. In the experiments, players' heart rate was measured during the warming-up, exercise and cooling-down periods by a wireless heart-rate measuring instrument. After they played the exercise game, a survey was conducted to see how they like this serious exercise game. The findings of the study suggest that the serious exercise game providing both video game and exercise would make a contribution to the improvement of health-related physical fitness since it serves to increase the heart rate and motivation.
Recently there have been many interests on tangible sport games that can recognize the motions of players. In this paper, we propose essential technologies required for tangible games, which are methods for swing motion recognition and the calculation of shuttle cock's trajectory. When a user carries out a badminton swing while holding a smartphone with his hand, the motion signal generated by smartphone-embedded acceleration sensors is transformed into a feature vector through a Daubechies filter, and then its swing type is recognized using a k-NN based method. The method for swing motion presented herein provides an advantage in a way that a player can enjoy tangible games without purchasing a commercial motion controller. Since a badminton shuttle cock has a particular flight trajectory due to the nature of its shape, it is not easy to calculate the trajectory of the shuttle cock using simple physics rules about force and velocity. In this paper, we propose a method for calculating the flight trajectory of a badminton shuttle cock in which the wind effect is considered.
This paper studied tangible interaction design of VR platform and its applications that are economic In development process and cost, flexible by contents and installation conditions, and that has business potential for consumer market. The design solution uses video based virtual world and tangible interaction by motion tracking. Our platform enables a user to monitor their action and to collaborate with other users of remote place within attractive interaction feedback. We developed two design applications, Glass Xylophone 2003 and VR Class, in our platform. Glass Xylophone 2003 provides interactive music performance and helps self practice of glass xylophone. VR Class gives more serious distance learning experience with tutoring and group collaboration. They are presented in public exhibitions and tested by exhibition visitors. They showed application potential of this design solution in interactive game, distance learning, and entertainment field.

Most mobile devices provide limited input interfaces in order to maximize the mobility and the portability. In this paper, the author proposes a small cubic-shaped tangible input interface which tracks the location, the direction, and the velocity using MEMS sensor technology to overcome the physical limitations of the poor input devices in mobile computing environments. As the preliminary phase for implementing the proposed tangible input interface, the prototype design and implementation methods are described in this paper. Various experiments such as menu manipulation, 3-dimensional contents control, and sensor data visualization have been performed in order to verify the validity of the proposed interface. The proposed tangible device enables direct and intuitive manipulation. It is obvious that the mobile computing will be more widespread and various kinds of new contents will emerge in near future. The proposed interface can be successfully employed for the new contents services that cannot be easily implemented because of the limitation of current input devices. It is also obvious that this kind of interface will be a critical component for future mobile communication environments. The proposed tangible interface will be further improved to be applied to various contents manipulation including 2D/3D games.

A tangible sports game is an exercise game that uses sensors or cameras to track the user's body movements and to feel a sense of reality. Recently, VR indoor sports room systems installed to utilize tangible sports game for physical activity in schools. However, these systems primarily use screen-touch user interaction. In this research, we developed a V-Catch Vision system that uses AI image recognition technology to enable tracking of user movements in three-dimensional space rather than two-dimensional wall touch interaction. We also conducted a usability evaluation experiment to investigate the exercise effects of this system. We tried to evaluate quantitative exercise effects by measuring blood oxygen saturation level, the real-time ECG heart rate variability, and user body movement and angle change of Kinect skeleton. The experiment result showed that there was a statistically significant increase in heart rate and an increase in the amount of body movement when using the V-Catch Vision system. In the subjective evaluation, most subjects found the exercise using this system fun and satisfactory.

Various 3D contents are being developed using Unity 3D game engine. In this paper, the 3D content of horseback riding game, the first VR game in the country, is designed and developed. The existing riding simulator is investigated and compared to the VR riding game developed. We consider various games developed using Unity 3D game engine and serve previously developed tangible games. It is expected that development of VR riding games will prepare a new chapter in VR experience-type games. We propose the content development environment and scenario of VR riding game and present the main algorithms and main modules for real-time synchronization. The developed riding game contents are deployed to the riding system and are operated for commercial use in conjunction with the riding device. Through monitoring VR riding system, problems are derived and improvement measures are proposed. We offer a variety of additional development options to make the game more realistic in the future.

Recently, the issue has been tangible game environment due to the various interactive interface developments. In this paper, we propose the multi card touch based interactive arcade system by using marker recognition interface and multi-touch interaction interface. For our system, the card's location and orientation information is recognized through DI-based recognition algorithm. In addition, the user's hand gesture tracking informations are provided by the various interaction metaphors. The system provides the user with a higher engagement offers a new experience. Therefore, our system will be used in the tangible arcade game machine.
This research verified that how Health-Consciousness and Enjoyment can have influence on the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM) using Structural Equation Model(SEM) to suggest a Tangible Fitness Game(TFG) acceptance model. First of all, perceived usefulness and ease of use, the core factors of TAM could influence on the intention to use TFG, so the applicability of TAM was confirmed in the context of using TFG. Health-consciousness, defined as some beliefs and interests on the importance of health, was found to have an positive effect on perceived usefulness and have an influence on the intention to use TFG. Enjoyment also influenced on the intention to use through usefulness and ease of use. This research contributes to make elaborate theoretical accounts by verifying some factors influencing on the intention to use TFG using Extended Technology Acceptance Model.
Recently there has been an increasing interest on tangible games in which human motions are recognized rather than the handling of keyboards and mouses. Such games require a motion controller for recognizing the motions of users. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of values of accelerator sensors which are generated by a user who perform a tennis swing while holding a smartphone with his/her hand, and propose a method for motion recognition based on DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform). The proposed method enables a smartphone to serve as a motion controller, so that a user can enjoy a tangible tennis game without eliminates a need for buying the device. We developed a tennis game prototype using the proposed method. To our experiment, our method showed a high recognition rate and the usefulness in the game.
