  • In this experiment, three different diets were produced to investigate the effects of Jeju native chicken meat, from chickens that were fed a tangerine by-product, on physiological activities in rats. The first diet did not contain any chicken (TS), the second diet contained 10% chicken that had not been fed the tangerine by-product (T0), and the third diet contained 10% that had been fed the by-products (T1). These diets were provided to 11-week-old male rats for four weeks. Weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, liver, kidney, and epididymis fat weights were not significantly different among the TS, T0, and T1 groups. Total lipid, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels in the liver were significantly lower in T0 and T1 than in TS (p<0.05). And total lipid, phospholipid, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, DL+VLDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol, and atherogenic index levels in the blood serum were similar between T0 and T1, which did not present any significant differences. The feed containing the tangerine by-product did not cause any statistically significant differences in serum protein, glucose, or hemoglobin. Finally, T0 and T1 showed similar trends in terms of $\gamma$-GTP, ALT, AST, and ALP activities, which again did not present any statistically significant differences.

  • The results of adding citrus to Jeungpyun in order to diversify the kinds of Jeungpyun available as well as enhance the usage of citrus fruits, were assessed in this study. During fermentation pH was reduced carbon dioxide development was lowest in the citron product and then the tangerine, cumquat and control Jeungpyun, respectively. Volume and specific volume of Jeungpyun were highest id the cumquat Jeungpyun. For all the citrus additions, except for the cumquat there were no significant differences when compared to the control. The tangerine product showed the highest redness and yellowness among the types of citrus, fellowed by cumquat, citron, and lemon. In the textural property tests, hardness was highest in the lemon Jeungpyun. Then, less hardness occurred in the order of citron, control, tangerine and the cumquat Jeungpyun was the softest. In the sensory evaluation, preferred color was in the order of tangerine, cumquat citron, and lemon Jeungpyun. Ultimately, the tangerine Jeungpyun had the best color. In the taste test, preferred taste was in the order of cumquat, citron, tangerine, and lemon Jeungpyun, all resulting in better taste than the pure Jeungpyun. The softness of the Jeungpyun was good in the order of cumquat, tangerine, control, citron, and lemon Jeungpyun. Thus, the cumquat Jeungpyun was softest, while lemon Jeungpyun was hardest. Finally, overall acceptance was good in the order of cumquat, tangerine, citron, control, and lemon Jeungpyun.

  • The effect of dietary pectin, tangerine pulp meal, propionate, lactate or fumarate on cholesterol (C) and triacylglycerol(TG) levels in the serum and liver, and the effect of pectin on dietary C absorption were studied in a series of three experiments. Mature female Sprague Dawley rats were fed a control diet or diets containing 5% pectin, 5% tangerine pulp meal, 3% propionate, 3% lactate 3% fumarate, or 10% pectin. Serum total C levels were lower(p<0.05) in rats fed the diet containing 5% pectin than in control rats after a 4-week feeding period(93.8 vs 119.2mg/100mL). Serum HDL, LDL+VLDL C levels were not different among diet groups. Liver total C level was also lower(p<0.05) in rats fed the diet containing 5% pectin than in control rats, but liver TG level was not influenced by diet. Dietary propionate, lactate or fumarate did not reduce serum C, indicating that propionate is not a regulator of serum C. However, dietary pectin(10%) increased fecal excretion of dietary C(or its metabolites) more than 70% over a control value. Our data indicate that dietary pectin reduces serum and liver C levels by increased fecal secretion of dietary C, but not by its fermentation product propionate or other gluconeogenic substrates.

  • Agricultural corrugated fiberboard packaging boxes frequently experience damage due to loading and unloading, vibration during transport, and shock by dynamic distribution condition change. This study was carried out to estimate effect of vibration during distribution process on compression strength of corrugated fiberboard boxes for agricultural products. In order to identify the degradation caused by vibration, after box packaging the agricultural products(tangerine or cucumber), the natural frequencies of the packaging boxes were measured by varying the relative humidity(50, 70 and 90%) at 25℃ temperature. Various types of corrugated fiberboard boxes were packed with tangerines and cucumbers, and the PSD plot vibration tests were conducted by utilizing the actual vibration recording results of the Gyeongbu Expressway section between Seoul and Gimcheon. As a result of the experiment, the decrease in compression strength of the box was relatively low in DW-AB, and the decrease in compression strength of the SW-A 0201(RSC) type box was the highest at 20.49%. In particular, both SW-A and DW-AB showed low compression strength degradation rates for open folder type boxes. The moisture content varies depending on the type of the box or agricultural products, and the enclosed 0201(RSC) type box was generally higher than the open folder or bliss type box, which is believed to be the reason for the decrease in compression strength of RSC type box due to humidity. By the agricultural product, the percentage of decrease in compression strength of box packed with cucumbers was especially high.

  • Citurs unshiu Markovich is a medicinal product of dried tangerine peel (DTP). It is effective on antioxidation, and getting fame as a medicine and functional food. By utilizing DTP as a feed additive, we aim to enhance the growth rate, innate immunity, and bacterial infection resistance to Tilapia. The DTP extract was added to the feed weight by 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5% and then fed to tilapia for 7 days to evaluate the innate immunity parameter, growth rate and anti-bacterial activity. Innate immunity parameter results showed that the ROI was significantly higher in the 5% group added at high concentration, while showing decrease or no differences in other experimental groups. In other parameters, all the experimental groups showed no significant difference or decreased compared to the control group. The challenge test showed a high survival rate of 71% in the 0.5% group and the lowest in the control group (36%). For the growth rate, the feed efficiency was improved in all groups except for the 0.1% group compared to the control group. In conclusion, DTP extract has bacterial resistant effect in while not affecting innate immune system of fish. Also, it has shown the potential as a possible feed additive as it has brought the improvement on feed efficiency ratio.
