  • Generally, the soil around railroad is contaminated by the leakage of oil during its maintenance or the operation of rolling stock. Because the railroad soil is located under ballast and is hardened with the designated strength due to safety, the characteristics of the polluted site are different. In this study, the phenomena of oil diffusion in the railroad site was investigated using 2-D reactor. The used oil was lubricant. As a result, the maximum diffusion depth of lubricant was about 9.5 cm due to its high viscosity and the hardened soil. The lubricant was diffused by gravity more than by horizontal migration. In the future, these results can be applied to develop a remediation method for the contaminated railroad soil.

  • The hepatic artery can have numerous variations. However, a common hepatic artery originating from the left gastric artery and the entire hepatic blood supply furnished by the left gastric artery is an extremely rare anomaly. We encountered this anomaly in a patient with advanced gastric cancer. A surgeon should recognize this image appearance and identify the anomaly. Without knowledge of this anomaly and given the strategy for extensive lesser sac dissection generally employed during gastric cancer surgery, a surgeon could easily inadvertently divide this vessel, resulting in critical liver damage. We report a case of common hepatic artery originating from left gastric artery and review of the literatures.

  • Fuzzy logic rule-based controller has many desirable advantages, which are simple to implement on the real time and need not the information of structure and dynamic characteristics of the system. Thus, nowadays, the scope of the application of the fuzzy logic controller becomes enlarged. But, if the controlled plant is a time-varying and nonlinear system, it is not easy to construct the fuzzy logic rules which usually need the knowledge of an expert. In this paper, an approach in which the logic control rules can be self-organized using genetic algorithm will be proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed method will be verified by computer simulation of the 2 d.o.f. planar robot manipulator.

  • Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have attracted scientific and medical interest due to their self-renewing properties, pluripotency, and paracrine function. However, one of the main limitations to the clinical application of MSCs is their loss of efficacy after transplantation in vivo. Various bioengineering technologies to provide stem cell niche-like conditions have the potential to overcome this limitation. Here, focusing on the stem cell niche microenvironment, studies to maximize the immunomodulatory potential of MSCs by controlling biomechanical stimuli, including shear stress, hydrostatic pressure, stretch, and biophysical cues, such as extracellular matrix mimetic substrates, are discussed. The application of biomechanical forces or biophysical cues to the stem cell microenvironment will be beneficial for enhancing the immunomodulatory function of MSCs during cultivation and overcoming the current limitations of MSC therapy.

  • The activation of cyclin dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) is found in more than half of all human cancers. Therefore CDK4 is an attractive target for the development of a novel anticancer agent. For mass screening of CDK4 inhibitor, we set up in vitro kinase assay for CDK4 activity using a cyclin D1-CDK4 fusion protein, which is constitutively active and exhibits enhanced stability. From the screening of representative compound library of Korea Chemical Bank, we found that 7-chloro-4-nitro-benzo[1,2,5]oxadiazole 1-oxide (FBP-1248) selectively inhibited CDK4 activity in vitro by ATP competitive manner. This compound prevented the phosphorylation of retinoblatsoma tumor suppressor protein, Rb, and inhibited cell growth through cell cycle arrest. In summary, we developed an efficient assay system for CDK4 activity in vitro and identified the CDK4 inhibitory compound, FBP-1248.

  • The rhizome of Cibotium barometz has been used for variety of bone disease as a traditional medicine. In the present study, we examined the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of 85% methanol extract of C. barometz. C. barometz exhibited potent scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, superoxide radical and nitric oxide radical. In IFN-$\gamma$/LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophage model, C. barometz suppressed nitric oxide production and IL-6 secretion dose-dependently. Moreover, C. barometz showed decreased iNOS and COX-2 expression without notable cytotoxicity. These results suggest that C. barometz may be an useful agent as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

  • Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) causes a bacterial speck disease in tomato and Arabidopsis. In Chinese cabbage, in which host-pathogen interactions are not well understood, Pst does not cause disease but rather elicits a hypersensitive response. Pst induces localized cell death and $H_2O_2$ accumulation, a typical hypersensitive response, in infiltrated cabbage leaves. Pre-inoculation with Pst was found to induce resistance to Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, a pathogen that causes soft rot disease in Chinese cabbage. An examination of the expression profiles of 12 previously identified Pst-inducible genes revealed that the majority of these genes were activated by salicylic acid or BTH; however, expressions of the genes encoding PR4 and a class IV chitinase were induced by ethephon, an ethylene-releasing compound, but not by salicylic acid, BTH, or methyl jasmonate. This implies that Pst activates both salicylate-dependent and salicylate-independent defense responses in Chinese cabbage.
