  • Routing paths are mightily important for the network security in WSNs. To maintain such routing paths, sustained path re-selection and path management are needed. Region segmentation based path selection method (RSPSM) provides a path selection method that a sensor network is divided into several subregions, so that the regional path selection and path management are available. Therefore, RSPSM can reduce energy consumption when the path re-selection process is executed. However, it is hard to guarantee optimized secure routing path at all times since the information using the path re-selection process is limited in scope. In this paper, we propose partial path selection method in each subregion using preselected partial paths made by RSPSM for routing path optimization in SEF based sensor networks. In the proposed method, the base station collects the information of the all partial paths from every subregion and then, evaluates all the candidates that can be the optimized routing path for each node using a evaluation function. After the evaluation process is done, the result is sent to each super DN using the global routing path information (GPI) message. Thus, each super DN provides the optimized secure routing paths using the GPI. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method via the simulation results. We expect that our method can be useful for the improvement of RSPSM.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment result of surgical resection after preoperative chemotherapy in inoperable gastric cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 18 gastric cancer patients who underwent gastric resection after preoperative chemotherapy because they showed some clinical response to chemotherapy (15 with distant metastasis and 3 with locally advanced lesions). The mean postoperative follow-up period was $15.3\pm15.5$ ($1\∼56$) months. Results: In 15 patients with distant metastasis, 2 ($13.3\%$) showed complete response (CR), 10 ($66.7\%$) partial response (PR), 2 ($13.3\%$) stable disease (SD), and 1 ($6.7\%$) progressive disease (PD). The clinical response rate was $80.0\%$ Five subtotal gastrectomies, 4 total gastrectomies, and 6 extended total gastrectomies were performed. Two cases of CR were alive without recurrence for 4 and 26 months, respectively. Mean survival period in PR case was 37.7 months, but 2 cases of SD and 1 case of PD died after 11.7, 17.9, and 0.9 months, respectively. Postoperative survival was significantly associated with the response to chemotherapy (P<0.01). The mean survival period of the 10 patients with a complete resection was 44.1 months, which was significantly better than that of the 5 patients with an incomplete resection (9.8 months, P=0.03). Among 3 patients with locally advanced gastric cancer, 2 cases showed PR to chemotherapy, and complete resection was possible only by gastrectomy for those patients. Conclusion: In some selected cases, surgical resection was achievable after preoperative chemotherapy for patients with inoperable metastatic or locally advanced gastric cancer.

  • Purpose: This study assessed the feasibility of near-infrared (NIR) imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) in investigating the completeness of laparoscopic lymph node (LN) dissection for gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Patients scheduled for laparoscopic gastrectomy for treating gastric cancer were enrolled in the study. After intraoperative submucosal ICG injection (0.05 mg/mL), LN dissection was performed under conventional laparoscopic light. After dissection, the LN stations of interest were examined under the NIR mode to locate any extra ICG-stained (E) tissues, which were excised and sent for pathologic confirmation. This technique was tested in 2 steps: infra-pyloric LN dissection (step 1) and review of all stations after proper radical node dissection (step 2). Results: In step 1, 15 patients who underwent laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (LPPG) and 15 patients who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) were examined. Seven and 2 E-tissues were obtained during LPPG and LDG, respectively. From the retrieved E-tissues, 1 and 0 tissue obtained during LPPG and LDG, respectively, was confirmed as LN. In step 2, 20 patients were enrolled (13 D1+ dissection and 7 D2 dissection). Six E-tissues were retrieved from 5 patients, and 1 tissue was confirmed as LN in the pathologic review. Overall, 15 E-tissues were detected and removed, and 2 tissues were confirmed as LNs in the pathologic review. Both nodes were from LN station #6, with 1 case each in the LDG and LPPG groups. Conclusions: NIR imaging may provide additional node detection during laparoscopic LN dissection for gastric cancer, especially in the infra-pyloric area.

  • In this study, experimental studies were performed for the carbon nanomaterial(CNM) which is catching on as a material for eco-ship. The opposed-flow methane flame was used as a heat source for synthesis of CNM. Ferrocene was used as a catalyst for the synthesis of CNM. These major parameters were $H_2$ mixing rate and sampling positions that synthesize CNMs in opposed-flow diffusion flames. The propensities of CNMs were experimentally determined using SEM and TEM images. The experimental result showed that the amount of CNTs was increased with increasing $H_2$ concentration. It can also be found that the optimal temperature in opposed-flow methane flame for synthesis of CNT was about 1500 K.

  • Bearings are essential for reducing vibration and wear, in order to achieve high durability and increase longevity. White metal treatment of tilting pads via centrifugal casting method has the possibility of increasing durability. However, this manufacturing method has drawbacks such as long processing time, high defect rate, and harmful health effects. Laser cladding deposition technique is a powerful method that can address these issues by decreasing the processing time and providing good adhesion. In this study, we suggest optimum conditions for laser cladding deposition that can be used in industrial applications. We deposited a soft white metal layer on SCM440 that is primarily used in shafts to minimize wear of bearing pads. During the laser deposition process, we controlled factors such as laser power, powder feed rate, and laser head speed to determine the optimum conditions. In addition, we measured the hardness using micro Vickers, and performed field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and friction tests to investigate the mechanical properties and surface characteristics for different parameters. Based on the experimental results, we suggest that laser power, powder feed rate, and laser head speed of 1.3 kW, 2.5 rpm, and 10 mm/s, respectively, constitute the optimum conditions for producing white metals using laser cladding.

  • Unreinforced masonry buildings are vulnerable to lateral forces, such as earthquakes, owing to the nature of the building materials, yet numerous masonry buildings remain in South Korea. Since the majority of the existing masonry buildings were constructed more than 20 years ago, it is necessary to develop economical reinforcement methods for disaster reduction. In this study, external reinforcement of masonry walls using adhesive stiffeners was proposed as a reinforcement method for such age-old masonry buildings. Six specimens were fabricated with different aspect ratios (L/H = 1.0, 1.3, and 2.0) and used in static load tests to verify the reinforcement effect. The experimental results showed that the masonry walls before and after reinforcement were ruptured by rigid body rotation and slip. In addition, the maximum strength, maximum displacement, and dissipated energy of the walls were shown to increase after applying the adhesive stiffeners, thereby verifying the excellent reinforcement effect. Furthermore, an adhesive stiffener design for unreinforced masonry walls was proposed based on the increased shear strength achieved by using conventional glass fibers. The proposed design can be used as a basis for the application of adhesive stiffeners for unreinforced masonry walls.

  • The relationship between dam construction and water quality has recently come to be considered an important issue. A dam is a physical factor which causes changes to the river system around it. Considering these points, this study was conducted to obtain basic data by analyzing the relationship between water level fluctuations and water quality parameters in the short-term. In terms of methodology, the new construction of the Yeongju Dam (M5) in 2016 was divided into Stage 1 as the lotic system and Stage 2 as the lentic system, with four years in each period, and the water level fluctuations and water quality were analyzed using official data. As a result of this study, M5, a stagnant area in which organic matter and nutrients accumulate, was found to be an important factor in water quality management. In addition, the water level changed rapidly (0.9±0.2 m → 10.9±7.1 m) as the river environment condition was converted from the lotic system to the lentic system. In addition, water quality parameters such as BOD, COD, TOC, and Chl-a significantly changed in the short-term. Further, since the transport of organic matter and nutrients occurred well in the lotic system, sedimentation was expected to be dominant in the lentic system. Therefore, it was determined that when the river flow is blocked, autochthonous organic matter is an important factor for long-term water quality management in the future. This process can increase the trophic state of the water body. As a result of this study, the TSIKO value was converted from mesotrophic in Stage 1 to eutrophic in Stage 2. Eventually, short-term changes in the river environment will affect not only changes in water level but also changes in water quality. Thus, a comprehensive and strategic approach is needed for long-term water quality management in the future.

  • Histone deacetylase (HDAC) is overexpressed in a variety of cancers and is closely correlated with oncogenic factors. HDAC inhibitors such as trichostatin A(TSA) and sodium butyrate (Na-B) have been shown to induce apoptosis in vitro and in vivo in many cancer cells. The anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein has the remarkable ability to prevent cell death and Bcl-2 overexpression has been reported to protect against cell death. We previously reported that the apoptotic cell death of human leukemic U937 cells by TSA and Na-B treatment was associated with the down-regulation of Bcl-2 expression and activation of caspases. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Bcl-2 overexpression on the growth inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induced by TSA and Na-B in U937 cells. TSA-induced growth inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were significantly attenuated in Bcl-2 overexpressing U937/Bcl-2 cells however Na-B did not affected. Induction of apoptosis by TSA was accompanied by down-regulation of Bcl-2 expression, activation of caspase-3, -8 and -9, and degradation of DNA fragmentation factor/inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase, which was blocked by the overexpression of Bcl-2. Collectively, these findings suggest that ectopic expression of Bcl-2 appeared to inhibit TSA-induced apoptosis by interfering with inhibition of Bcl-2 and caspase activation.

  • This study investigated problems found with the installation of a descending life line which is one of the compulsory fire escape apparatuses required by the revised "Fire Service Act" of 2006 for multi-use facilities and multistory buildings. It presents an analysis of the causes and improvement details for the problems classified by type of item. To achieve the purpose, the total 367 problem points are indicated. The problems of Installation are unsuitable window glass using the descending life line(34%), required passage device is not attached(23.7%), the installation location is with required operation(20%) and damaged descending life line(20%) were investigated. In particular, the study looks at the stress analysis range for cracking window glass which is required for people to escape in an emergency. People have questioned unsuitable window glass for using the descending life line among the problems with the installation. As a result of stress analysis, window glass thickness of the place where the descending life line is installed must be 3 or 6 mm. In addition, this study indicates substantial improvement measures for installing the descending life line so I will actually be used as a fire escape apparatus to protect human lives, and not just to formally meet the Fire Service Act.

  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN) is a disorder of the vascular transition from fetal to neonatal circulation. It results in cyanosis due to right-to-left shunting of the blood through the ductus arteriosus and/or foramen ovale manifesting as hypoxemic respiratory failure. We managed two cases of PPHN after meconium aspiration with high frequency oscillating ventilators and inhaled nitric oxide. They did not respond to conventional management. Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was provided, and ECMO weaning was possible resulting survivals in two cases. We report two PPHN cases, which were treated successfully with veno-venous ECMO for the first time in Korea.
