This paper presents an Electrotactile Display System (ETCS). One of the most important human sensory systems for human computer interaction is the sense of touch, which can be displayed to human through tactile output devices. To realize the sense of touch, electrotactile display produces controlled, localized touch sensation on the skin by passing small electric current. In electrotactile stimulation, the mechanoreceptors in the skin may be stimulated individually in order to display the sense of vibration, touch, itch, tingle, pressure etc. on the finger, palm, arm or any suitable location of the body by using appropriate electrodes and waveforms. We developed an ETCS and investigated effectiveness of the proposed system in terms of the perception of roughness of a surface by stimulating the palmar side of hand with different waveforms and the perception of direction and location information through forearm. Positive and negative pulse trains were tested with different current intensities and electrode switching times on the forearm or finger of the user with an electrode-embedded armband in order to investigate how subjects recognize displayed patterns and directions of stimulation.

In teleoperation, it is important for an operator to feel as if he really were in a distant place. To realize this objective, the various information from a remote site must be presented to the operator. Even though tactile information is very important to efficiently execute a task, it is not yet sufficiently provided for the operator. In this paper, we propose the new mechanism that can provide the more dexterous tactile information to the operator This device utilizing the electromagnetic force is designed to be compact and light enough to be attached to the fingerpad, and designed to be controlled continuously. The magnetic circuit is derived by the probable flux paths method in order to take forces at any given dimension. An optimization technique is also proposed to maximize the tactile force that humans can perceive under the same conditions. The objective function is formulated as maximizing displacements indented on the fingerpad, considering the mechanism of human tactile perception. The optimization formulation is subject to the geometric and rising temperature constraints in the coil. It is demonstrated that, by optimization, the tactile force increases by 24%, compared with that obtained from the initial design.

Human senses have been studied widely. Many studied are being actively conducted to analyze correlations between two or more different senses. Among them, research on tactile visuality where a subject can indirectly experience visual sensation through tactile elements is also progressing in various fields. In this study, we analyzed color information by having subjects perceive sandpapers with different roughness through tactile sense, then having them choose a color that is reminiscent of the tactile sensation. Unlike existing tactile-visuality studies allowing the perception of indirect visual sense by using tactile sense, this study shows that it is possible to analyze with quantitative value by representing visual image perceived by tactile sense as a color. This study will contribute to emotional evaluation research that combines two or more of the senses felt by humans, and especially is considered to be useful as basic data when conducting research about tactile visuality or auditory tactile sense.
In this paper, we describe a study on the influence of the frequency variation of normal vibration using an integrated tactile display. It is necessary to consider this study because we want to find a method of displaying finer texture and know that the perception of fine textures is heavily influenced by temporal variation. Our tactile display system used in this experiment can simulate the micro shapes and roughness of surface textures by individual drives of a 6x8 pin array. Two experiments are performed. The first is a psychophysical experiment on the definition and range decision of roughness, and through the experiment, we clear up the meaning of roughness. The second is the main experiment about the frequency variation of normal vibration. We find the correlation between the vibration frequency and the texture and the condition for better display and perception of fine surfaces. The experimental results yielded two pieces of information. One is that lateral movement affects texture discrimination, and another is that normal vibration can make the perceived texture feel finer than real texture. That is, the vibrating stimulus is more effective for displaying a fine surface than static pressure, and it makes possible to display finer texture, exceeding the physical limit of the device.
With the New media of present age we are living at, strongly entice consumers through various sensible technology and give influences on our life. They are visually formed but make us feel them as if formed tactile. The masses of today are meeting media through all the senses in daily life according to the spread of on-line media and in such course they want momentary and tactile share. Since appearance of mass society and cinema following such current, art has appealed to dispersive and tactile perception, and such public way of perception makes it possible to experience 'visual tactility' in daily life in accordance with the development of on-line game culture among others. The shock effects, given by editing of game animations which are produced for epic experience of on-line game, arouse tactility in addition to visibility. Under this assumption and on the basis of visual tactility theory as well as montage theory of image by Walter Benjamin, the research intends to explain that public tactile shock does not result from simple graphic effect but from montage effect and dispersive acceptance.

This study was designed to investigate the feasibility of utilizing an adaptation for selective elicitation of tactile sensations by means of transcutaneous electrical stimulation. We conducted the first experiment to investigate how the stimulation frequency affected the adaptation. Twenty healthy subjects participated in the second experiment to confirm our proposal that the perception intensity of the low-frequency vibration can be enhanced after a high-frequency adaptation, and vice versa. It was found that (1) a low-frequency stimulation did not adapt the nerve afferents responsible for the high-frequency vibration, (2) a high-frequency stimulation affected the nerve afferents responsible for the low-frequency vibration, but adapted to the pressure sensation more intensely, and (3) more than 62% of the subjects reported a more clear selective sensation after the adaptation had lessened or depressed the unwanted sensation. The observations showed that adaptation of the nerve afferent could be utilized for selective elicitation of tactile sensations.
Purpose: Oral and facial sensation is affected by various factors, including trauma and disease. This study assessed the clinical profile of patients diagnosed with sensory dysfunction and investigated their sensory perception using simple qualitative sensory tests. Methods: Based on a retrospective review of the medical records, we analyzed a total of 68 trigeminal nerve branches associated with sensory dysfunction in 52 subjects. We analyzed the frequency and etiology of sensory dysfunction, and the frequency of different types of sensory perception in response to qualitative sensory testing using tactile and pin-prick stimuli. Results: The inferior alveolar nerve branch was the most frequently involved in sensory dysfunction (88.5%). Third molar extraction (36.5%) and implant surgery (36.5%) were the most frequent etiological factors associated with sensory dysfunction. Hypoesthesia was the most frequent sensory response to tactile stimuli (60.3%). Pin-prick stimuli elicited hyperalgesia, hypoalgesia, and analgesia in 32.4%, 27.9%, and 36.8%, respectively. A significant association was found between the two kinds of stimuli (p=0.260). Conclusions: Sensory dysfunction frequently occurs in the branches of the trigeminal nerve, including the inferior alveolar nerve, mainly due to trauma associated with dental treatment. Simple qualitative sensory testing can be conveniently used to screen sensory dysfunction in patients with altered sensation involving oral and facial regions.
Objective : This paper provides a narrative review of the research literature on the neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of local vibration while studying the treatment principles and mechanisms of Whidam's vibrator Sugi therapy. Methods : Searches related to vibration therapy research were conducted in PUBMED using "Vibration", "Whole Body Vibration", "Localized Vibration", and "Focal Vibration". The Conditions were limited to review and systematic review. Results : Roberto Casale's paper was selected as an inquiry task and reviewed critically and narratively by referring to other papers. The stimulation process of local vibration (LV) was broadly classified into receptor transmission (pain reception phase), ascending sensory pathway to the spinal cord (segmental phase), and action of the cortex and subcortical structures (systemic control phase) according to the pain pathway. In addition, the role of C-tactile mechanoreceptors, changes in neurotransmitters and neurohormones, LV stimulation below perception threshold (lower threshold), pain control and kinesiologic illusions were specially addressed. In addition, the expression and function of Piezo Channels were added to supplement the human pain and tactile sensing mechanism. Conclusions : LV exerts pain control mechanisms through different interactions that can interfere with pain transmission and pain perception. Since LV provides sufficient neurophysiological reasons for clinical application, it is necessary to expand the use of Whidam's vibrator Sugi therapy to a wider range of clinical applications.
The trends in nursing practice are not disease-oriented approaches but holistic, humanistic approaches such as human touch, which is an easily applied, economic, and efficient intervention. The purposes of this paper were to clarify the meaning of the concept "touch" to define the precise attributes of “touch” which could be a basis for nursing interventions. This study uses Walker & Avant's process of concept analysis. The concept of touch can be defined as follows : Touch is a process of communication and physical contact with intention, which is transfered by tactile senses. Attributes of touch are defined as 1) It is transferred by tactile senses. 2) A process of communication 3) A expressive pathway of emotion 4) It has intention. Antecedents of "touch" consist that 1) the touch provider understands the touch receiver's perception of past experiences of touch : 2) the touch provider is concerned about the touch receiver and comes up to the touch receiver : 3) the touch provider wants to deliver his /her emotions ; 4) the touch receiver needs the ability to differentiate the tactile senses. In regard to the consequences of touch, it is expected to keep the touching action between the touch provider and receiver, to feel empathy, to able to perceive the consumer's needs, to feel comfort, intimacy, trust, and to calm down the physiological variables. That is performing the nursing as a caring science.
