Development of Media Processing Board for Multi-Party Voice and Video Telephony using Open Source Software (공개소프트웨어 기반 다자간 음성 및 영상통화용 미디어처리보드 개발)

  • Korean military uses 'Tactical information communication network' to exchange information between units. In this study, we developed a media processing board for multi-party voice and video telephony based on open source software. On the other hand, in order to apply open source software for weapon systems and parts that are mounted on weapon systems, appropriate review is required according to the weapon system software development and management manual of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). In this study, the analysis of the requirement items was performed and the appropriate countermeasures were proposed for the open software applied to the media processing board with respect to 'the guidelines for the application of weapon systems to open source software', an appendix to the DAPA's manual.

Measurement and Analysis of Antenna Induced Voltage for Tactical Mobile Wireless Communication System under HEMP Environment (HEMP 상황 하 전술기동무선통신체계 안테나 유도전압 측정 및 분석)

  • The situation of high-altitude electromagnetic pulses (HEMP) arises from high-altitude nuclear explosions. The HEMP situation can be simulated through the threat level investigation (TLI). In this paper, the induced voltage according to the antenna type of the tactical mobile radio communication system was measured and analyzed by TLI. Under the influence of HEMP, electronic equipment can be paralyzed or damaged. HEMP protection filters are commercially available for power lines and signal lines. However, commercialization of HEMP filters for antennas is insufficient, and even some of them exist for lightning protection. In order to make an appropriate HEMP protection filter according to the frequency and type of the antenna, the induced voltage was measured and the maximum induced voltage was analyzed through extrapolation. It was found that the measured induced voltage decreased as the frequency increased, such as in the HF, VHF and UHF bands of the measurement results.

A Conversion Protocol for 2W Telephone Signal over Ethernet in a Private PSTN (사설 PSTN에서 2W 전화 신호의 이더넷 변환 프로토콜)

  • In this paper, we proposed a protocol to convert 2W telephone analog signals to Ethernet data in a private PSTN 2W tactical voice system. There are several kinds of operational problems in the tactical telephone network where 2W telephone copper lines are installed hundreds of meters away from the PBX in a headquarter site. The reason is that it is difficult to install and maintain the 2W telephone copper cable in severe operational fields and to meet safety and stability operational requirements of the telephone line under lighting and electromagnetic environments. In order to solve these challenging demands, we proposed an efficient method that the 2W analog interface signals between a private PBX system and a 2W telephone is converted to Ethernet messages using the optical Ethernet data communication network already deployed in the tactical weapon system. Thus, it is not necessary to install an additional optic cable for the ethernet telephone line and to maintain the private PSTN 2W telephone network. Also it provides safe and secure telecommunication operation under lightning and electromagnetic environments. This paper presents the conversion protocol from 2W telephone signals over Ethernet interface between PBX systems and 2W telephones, the mutual exchange protocol of ethernet messages between two converters, and the rule to process analog signal interface. Finally, we demonstrate that the proposed technique can provide a feasible solution in the tactical weapon system by analyzing its performance and experimental results such as the bandwidth of 2W telephone ethernet network and the transmission latency of voice signal, and the stability of optic ethernet voice network along with the ethernet data network.

  • In the military field, according to the MIL-STD-188-220, which is an Ad-Hoc communication protocol used for sending out or receiving data and voice smoothly among nodes in the situation that wireless communication nodes move arbitrarily, data communication is cut off because nodes can not know topology changes perpetually in the link disconnection state due to node movement in the case that transmitters do not confirm whether data is delivered to receivers or not, and transmit only the data having routine precedence continuously. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed the technique that makes efficient data communication possible by achieving a rapid topology change detection and link information update using TEST frame. We have analyzed TEST frame application effects in the two aspects of the topology update delay time and the data transmission success ratio.

  • Unmanned robot system has become a significant part of network centric warfare. Unnlike the commercial wireless system, however, it is tricky to provide reliable communication in the harsh environment: tactical and military communication. Therefore, it needs to be considered when the base station and mobile has poor communication channel. In this paper, we proposed an efficient operating algorithm for unammned robot system with ensuring communication survivability in the harsh environment. From the simulation, we adopted the SUI channel suitable for domestic mountainous area and open terrain with Rician factor K.

  • Defense M&S (Modeling&Simulation) is a tool that creates a virtual battle situation similar to the real world, measuring and evaluating the effects of war or combat elements. However, it is very challenging to consider all the possible outcomes on the battlefield. To solve this problem, we propose a battlefield ontology, which conceptualizes the data of battlefield situation with tactical considerations. The proposed battlefield ontology is evaluated based on various communication posts in war game scenarios. The battlefield ontology is expected to assist the process of quick and accurate command decisions in convoluted battlefield situations.

  • In this paper, a practical model for evaluating and comparing the bit error rates(BERs) due to adjacent channel mutual interference in a synchronous and asynchronous frequency hopped spread spectrum multiple access(FH-SSMA) radio communication systems is proposed. After implementing the actual FH radio in both the sychronous and asynchronous case, the BER is computed and measured. An experiment of this system in mobile tactical environments reveals that the performance in the asynchronous case is lower than that of the synchronous case. The computer simulation model is an efficient tool for designing practical FH radios in mobile communication environments.

A Genetic Algorithm Approach to the Frequency Assignment Problem on VHF Network of SPIDER System

  • A frequency assignment problem on time division duplex system is considered. Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) has been establishing an infrastructure of tactical communication (SPIDER) system for next generation and it will be a core network structure of system. VHF system is the backbone network of SPIDER, that performs transmission of data such as voice, text and images. So, it is a significant problem finding the frequency assignment with no interference under very restricted resource environment. With a given arbitrary configuration of communications network, we find a feasible solution that guarantees communication without interference between sites and relay stations. We formulate a frequency assignment problem as an Integer Programming model, which has NP-hard complexity. To find the assignment results within a reasonable time, we take a genetic algorithm approach which represents the solution structure with available frequency order, and develop a genetic operation strategies. Computational result shows that the network configuration of SPIDER can be solved efficiently within a very short time.

  • The success of naval operation prioritizes the implementation of a robust communication network that delivers accurate and prompt communications to one another. The satellite, which is the main communication network of the military, is required to construct a preliminary communication network because of the enemy radio disturbance and weak point of fixed antenna. The military operational communication network has been in transition from voice-centered wireless communication network to text message-based communication network. In this paper we suggest an enhanced communication method built on Roll Call, the main communication method of ROK Navy operating tactical data link called Link-11. Simulation results display that the proposed method reduces the transmission time per unit frame by 4.3 times compared to the Roll Call and 6.3 times compared with the Round Robin & Broadcasting; it is also proved that the higher the direct reception rate, the shorter the transmission time required by 1.6 times maximum.

However, conscription administration and the barracks informationization have inadequate points, to provide the people who have a duty of military service and parents with benefits and develop conscription administration and the barracks informationization base system conformed to IT age include using online system to guarantee military personnel's studying environment, writer proposed an improvement plan.
