  • In this paper, design measure were proposed for the construction of terminal systems for airborne platforms, which are key element in the Joint Tactical Data Link System (JTDLS) complete system. The Korean perfect tactical data link (JTDLS) is a communication system to establish an independent tactical data link network and needs to develop a MIDS-LVT (Link-16) communication terminal for datalink. Once a Ground/Navy JTDLS terminal system is established around airborne platform, it will be possible to break away from reliance on NATO-based tactical data link joint operations and establish independent Korean surveillance reconnaissance real-time data sharing and tactical data link operations concepts. in this paper, the essential development elements of airborne platform mounting and operable JTDLS terminals are presented, and the concept of system design is proposed to embody them. Further, improved system performance was analyzed by applying the concepts of complex relative navigation system and Advanced TDMA protocol for the deployment of airborne tactical datalink networks.

  • Network Centric Warfare(NCW) is becoming a prominent concept in the current trend of warfare. To support high quality communication between strategic/tactical units in the concept of NCW, Tactical Airborne Networks are likely to be constructed in the near future to take part in the NCW. In these Tactical Airborne Networks with dynamic topology variations due to very high mobility of participants nodes, more efficient and reliable neighbor discovery protocols are needed. This paper presents the adaptive HELLO message scheduling algorithm for Tactical Airborne Network using directional antennas. The purposed algorithm can reduce the overhead of periodic HELLO message transfer, while guaranteeing successful data transmission. We concluded a mathematical analysis and simulation studies using Qualnet 4.5 for evaluation the performance and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

  • Airborne tactical networks is used to air-to-air or air-to-ground operation and have a large propagation delay. All nodes share the data by using TDMA-based broadcasting. In airborne tactical networks, each time slot needs the guard time to ensure the broadcasting because the collisions occur due to the large propagation delay. However, the channel utilization of the networks can be greatly degraded due to the waste of guard time. In this paper, we propose Inter-Transmitter Distance-Based TDMA (ID-TDMA) scheme which ensures the broadcasting while improving the channel utilization by reducing the guard time with the inter-transmitter distance information. The proposed scheme shows the effectiveness through the performance evaluation.

  • This paper describes an operational concept of the network based future airborne force power using a systems engineering approach. The battlefield is changing to new system of systems that command and control by the network based BM/C4ISR. Also, it is composed of various sensors and shooters in an single theater. Future threats may be characterized as unmanned moving bodies that the strategic effect is great such as UAVs, cruise missile and tactical ballistic missiles. New threats such as low altitude stealth cruise missile may also appear. The implementation of future airborne force power network systems against these future threats is required to complex and integrated approach based on systems engineering. This work developed the operational concepts of the future airborne network system, and then derived the requirements for performing missions effectively. In addition, the scheme of future airborne force power network systems is presented.

  • Korean army has been trying to construct a future tactical network in collaboration with TICN at the ground level and the next-generation military satellite system in the space level. However, due to the low bandwidth and high operational cost, the satellite system has the limitation to exchange all kind of tactical information through it. To overcome the limitation, there have been several researches to construct airborne networks. In this paper, we propose an effective interworking architecture and operation scheme between terrestrial tactical networks and aerial relay networks to counteract against the communication breaks of terrestrial terminals. And, we also propose a way to analyze its effectiveness. The experimental results show that the interworking of aerial relay networks can manage the failure situations in terrestrial tactical networks very effectively.

  • For strengthening the national defense, the function of tactical network is essential. tactics and strategies in wartime situations are based on numerous information. Therefore, various reconnaissance devices and resources are used to collect a huge amount of information, and they transmit the information through tactical networks. In tactical networks that which use contention based channel access scheme, high-speed nodes such as recon aircraft may have performance degradation problems due to unnecessary channel occupation. In this paper, we propose a learning-backoff method, which empirically learns the size of the contention window to determine channel access time. The proposed method shows that the network throughput can be increased up to 25% as the number of high-speed mobility nodes are increases.

  • In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the future battlefield will carry out multi-area operations with hyper-connected, high-speed and mobile systems. In order to prepare for changes in the future, the Korean military intends to develop various weapons systems and form a multi-layer tactical network to support On The Move communication. However, current tactical networks are limited in support of On The Move communications. In other words, the operation of multi-beam antennas is necessary to efficiently construct a multi-layer tactical network in future warfare. Therefore, in this paper, we look at the need for multi-beam antennas through the operational scenario of a multi-layer tactical network. In addition, based on development consideration factors, features of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, we present the location and operation of airborne relay drone installations of multi-beam antennas.

  • As modern warfare has changed into network centered, the ability to share situational awareness among allies become a core competency for performing operational missions. In an airborne environment, it uses a tactical data link such as Link-16 for shared situational awareness. There exist problems when it shares situational awareness over the existing data link that can not allocate slots dynamically or that can not change the number of a slot to be allocated. In addition, there was a problem that can not share this failure so that failed to improves situation awareness because of finite time slot resources. In this paper, we accommodate dynamic slot allocation and changes of slot allocation with mixed structure of TDMA (time division multiple access) and random access. We propose a technique that can be used when available slots are exhausted, and a load balancing method to prevent slot allocation delay when slot requesting or message sending is concentrated on a single subframe.

  • In this paper, a novel resource scheduling, which is used for hub network based long distance airborne tactical communication, is proposed. Recently, some countries of the world has concentrated on developing data rate and networking performance of CDL, striving to keep pace with modern warfare, which is changed into NCW. And our government has also developed the next generation high capacity CDL. In hub network, a typical communication structure of CDL, hybrid FDMA/TDMA can be considered to exchange high rate data among multiple UAVs simultaneously, within limited bandwidth. However, due to different RTT and traffic size of UAV, idle time resource and unnecessary packet transmission delay can occur. And these losses can reduce entire efficiency of hub network in long distance communication. Therefore, in this paper, we propose RTT and data traffic size based UAV scheduling, which selects time/frequency resource of UAVs by using iterative sorting algorithm. The simulation results verified that the proposed scheme improves data rate and packet delay performance in low complexity.
