  • Magnetic properties of FeTaN and FeTaC films deposited by DC magnetron reactive sputter were investigated, and correlated with their microstructures. The optimum magnetic properties of Hc : 0.25 Oe, Bs : 14.5 kG, and ${\mu}'$ : 4000 (5MHz) are observed in the $Fe_{78.8}Ta_{8.5}N_{12.7}$ film, and Hc : 0.25 Oe, Bs : 14.5 kG, and ${\mu}'$ : 2700 (5MHz) in the $Fe_{75.6}Ta_{8.1}C_{16.3}$ film. In both FeTaN and FeTaC films with minimum grain size show the best soft magnetic properties. Thermal stability of the soft magnetic properties of FeTaN is found to be higher than FeTaC for similar compositons. TaN and TaC particles form to retard the growth of $\alpha$-Fe grains. TaN particles in FeTaN show higher efficiency in retarding the grain growth during heat treatments resulting the higher thermal stability, compared to TaC particles in FeTaC films.

  • We prepared Co-Cr-Ta and Co-Cr-Ta/Ti thin film for perpendicular magnetic recording media by facing targets sputtering system (FTS system). Ti underlayer effects on crystallographic and magnetic characteristics of Co-Cr-Ta perpendicular magnetic recording media have been investigated. Crystallgraphic and magnetic characteristic of prepared thin films were evaluated by x-ray diffractometry(XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM) and kerr hysteresis loop measurement. The coercivity and anisotropy field increase by introduced Ti underlayer when substrate temperature is higher than 150$^{\circ}C$. The c-axis dispersion angle and grain size of Co-Cr-Ta/Ti thin film is decrease than Co-Cr-Ta when substrate temperature is higher than 100$^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the use of a Ti underlayer highly orientated can be improved crystallographic and magnetic characteristics of Co-Cr -Ta perpendicular media layer.

  • The interface stability of Ta-Mo alloy film on SiO$_2$ was investigated. Ta-Mo alloy films were formed by co-sputtering method, and the alloy composition was varied by controlling Ta and Mo sputtering power, When the atomic composition of Ta was about 91%, the measured work function was 4.24 eV that is suitable for NMOS gate. To identify interface stability between Ta-Mo alloy film and SiO$_2$, C-V and XRD measurements were performed on the samples annealed with rapid thermal processor between $600^{\circ}C$ and 90$0^{\circ}C$. Even after 90$0^{\circ}C$ rapid thermal annealing, excellent interface stability and electrical properties were observed. Also, thermodynamic analysis was studied to compare with experimental results.

  • Hydride-dehydride process for efficient recycling of tantalum (Ta) is used for manufacturer of Ta powder. In case of metal powder, Impurities as like nitride, oxygen, hydrogen is decreased of physical properties. For manufacture of Ta powder, control of theses impurities is important. In this study, to decreased of impurities on Ta powder using HDH process optimize dehydride condition. Dehydration behavior of Ta is depended on temperature, time, and atmosphere. Phase transition of Ta hydride is analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Concentration of hydrogen is decreased with temperature increased. At high temperature, concentration of hydrogen in Ta is similar according to time increased. Size and morphology of powder is not observed after dehydride. Ta powder, which is less than 20 um, concentration of hydrogen under 800 ppm is obtain.

  • Background: Timosaponin AIII (TA3) is a steroidal saponin extracted from Anemarrhena asphodeloides. Here, we investigated the anticancer effects of TA3 in MG63 human osteosarcoma cells. TA3 attenuates migration and invasion of MG63 cells via regulations of two matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), MMP-2 and MMP-9, which are involved with cancer metastasis in various cancer cells. TA3 reduced enzymatic activities and transcriptional expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in MG63 cells. TA3 also inhibited Src, focal adhesion kinase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38, ${\beta}-catenin$, and cAMP response element binding signaling, which regulate migration and invasion of cells. TA3 induced apoptosis of MG63 cells via regulations of caspase-3, caspase-7, and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Then, we tested several ginsenosides to be used in combination with TA3 for the synergistic anticancer effects. We found that ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc have synergistic effects on TA3-induced apoptosis in MG63 cells. Methods: We investigated the anticancer effects of TA3 and synergistic effects of various ginseng saponins on TA3-induced apoptosis in MG63 cells. To test antimetastatic effects, we performed wound healing migration assay, Boyden chamber invasion assays, gelatin zymography assay, and Western blot analysis. Annexin V/PI staining apoptosis assay was performed to determine the apoptotic effect of TA3 and ginsenosides. Results: TA3 attenuated migration and invasion of MG63 cells and induced apoptosis of MG63 cells. Ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc showed the synergistic effects on TA3-induced apoptosis in MG63 cells. Conclusions: The results strongly suggest that the combination of TA3 and the two ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc may be a strong candidate for the effective antiosteosarcoma agent.

  • Soft magnetic properties and microstructural evolution of FeTaNC films were investigated, and compared with FeTaN and FeTaC films. Effects of substrate species (glass vs. $CaTiO_3$) on the magnetic properties were also investigated. Co-addition of N and C significantly enhance the grain refinments and magnetism, compared with N or C addition only. Good soft magnetic characteristics of coercivity of 0.17 Oe, permeability of 4000 (5MHz), and saturation flux density of 17 kG can be obtained in the FeTaNC in the relatively wide process windows. While these values appears to be similar to those of FeTaN on glass substrate, most distinctive difference between FeTaNC and FeTaN(or C) is in the effects of substrate. Whereas FeTaNC films show good magnetic characteristics for both glass and $CaTiO_3$ substrates, FeTaN(or C) films show significant degradation on the $CaTiO_3$ substrate.

  • Carbon/carbon composites (C/C) have been widely studied in the aerospace field because of their excellent thermal shock resistance and specific strength at high temperature. However, they have the problems that is easily oxidized and deteriorated under atmospheric environment. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the CVD coating of ultra-high-temperature ceramics to C/C has become an important technical issue. In this study, thermodynamic calculations were performed to TaC CVD coating on C/C by FactSage 6.2 program. The Ta-C phase diagrams were constructed with the results of thermodynamic calculations in the Ta-C-H-Cl system. Based on the Ta-C phase diagram, the experimental conditions were designed to confirm the deposition of various phases such as TaC single phase, TaC + C and $TaC+Ta_2C$ by varying the composition of Ta/C ratio. The deposited films were found to be in good agreement with the predicted phases.

  • We analyzed 29 surface sediment samples in five submarine volcanoes (TA12, TA19, TA22, TA25, and TA26) located in the southern part of the Tonga arc for trace elements and rare earth elements to investigate characteristics of the hydrothermal alteration of surface sediments. Based on analytical results of trace element and rare earth element (REE), surface sediments of TA12, TA19, and TA22 submarine volcanoes, which are located in the northern part of the study area, were very little or not influenced by hydrothermal fluids. In contrast, some stations of TA25 and TA26 submarine volcanoes were strongly affected by hydrothermal fluids. However, these two submarine volcanoes showed different features in element concentration in the sediments. Some stations of TA25 submarine volcano showed enrichment of Ni, Cu, Sn, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, Sb, W, Ba, Ta, Rb, Sr, and As, however, those of TA26 submarine volcano showed enrichment of Sn, Zn, Pb, Cd, Sb, Ba, Rb, and Sr. Stations which enriched trace elements were observed, enriched REEs were also observed. Average upper continental crust (UCC)-normalized REE patterns of the surface sediments generally showed low light REE (LREE) abundances and increased heavy REE (HREE) abundances. Eu enrichment was identified at several stations of TA25 and TA26 submarine volcanoes. In addition, enrichment of Ce was found at some stations of TA26 submarine volcano and these enrichment patterns were similar with hydrothermal fluid of near stations. Furthermore, TA25 and TA26 submarine volcanoes showed different enrichment characteristics of trace elements and REE. Trace elements were concentrated at TA25 submarine volcano. TA26 submarine volcano, on the other hand, observed highly enrichment of REE especially, Eu and Ce. As a result of the investigation, the characteristics and concentrations of REEs and trace elements in the surface sediments of each submarine volcano can be applied to identify hydrothermal alteration of sediments during exploration for hydrothermal deposits.
