We employed questionnaires and collected data from 443 people. Only 400 reliable questionnaires were used for a statistical analysis with SPSS program on the frequency, Chi-square test, and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The amount of makeup, and the reason for makeup were statistically associated with the segmented groups which are career women and college females. Also we realized that there was a significant difference in 'sophisticated' and 'sexy' makeup images. Both images were more highly sought in career women. 2. The preference of lip colors & textures, types of eye liner, and types of foundation were associated with the segmented career/college female groups. Both groups favored more glossy lipstick. Career women preferred liquid eye liner and foundation, while college females like to use no foundation. 3. Both career women and college females acquired information about cosmetics from the friend's advice rather than TV or magazine. In purchasing, career women considered the most quality, while college females considered suitable cosmetics for their natural skin types.

  • In the Edo period speaking of hair culture, common women wore decorative pigtail ribbons on the right, and twisted from side to side their tressed hair in such a manner as ungeunmeori and traemeori. Instead of gachae, common women used gogae made of their own hair, ungeunmeori on forehead, or jjokjinmeori at the back of head. During the Edo period, people women naturally exposed their necklines as a way of exposing their faces in the aesthetically ceremonial act of wearing make-up. As for lipsticks, they rouged extracts from red petals of safflowers mainly on their lips, and sometimes on their cheeks by blending this with white powder. Samurai families disliked women who wore thick lip makeup. In the latter period, women painted their necklines or foreheads black, applied a small amount of rouge on their cheeks thinly or thickly, and colored a reddish color into their fingernails by using petals and leaves of balsam flowers. Despite the chronological and spatial proximity of the King Jeongjo period and the Edo period, it was found that there were no similarities between two countries' cosmetic cultures. Moreover, it was discovered that current TV dramas were being produced, even not based on historical evidence in the Jeongjo period.

  • There are lots of sexual images in the contemporary media, and this is due to many of the media formats, such as television, magazines, and the Internet, using these images to relay various messages to the people. The media uses these sexual images (i.e. woman in a bikini) in order to use sex and eroticism as a marketing tool to the audience. Unlike other men's magazines, which actually have many female readers, Maxim magazine's readers are made of mostly men, and because of this, their magazine covers are usually filled with sexy women celebrities, such as singers or actors; images that can attract the general men. This study puts its focus on evaluating Maxim magazine's marketing strategy. The strategy of targeting men in their 20's and 30's, who were not interested in reading, but were impulsive and visually oriented. The study looked at magazine covers from November 2002 (the start of the magazine) to October 2008 (the peak period of its sales), and a total of 72 images were analyzed. For each image, 5 things were recorded (model's occupation, clothing style, hairstyle, makeup, pose and gaze).

  • Young adults are likely to start a new life style which may cause weight gain or obesity since leaving their parents for higher education or university. Whilst young people are slim in general, it is common to see them trying to manage their weight. Few studies have been carried out in Korea to support those changes in lifestyle that can result in weight gain in early adulthood. This study aims to identify prevalence of dieting as well as factors inducing weight gain among university students under unrestricted living conditions. A total of 99 university students were enrolled and asked to complete a questionnaire over a 3-day study period from June to September, 2008. T-test and $X^2$-test were applied to compare each behavior between weight gainers and maintainers. Logistic regression was also used for further analysis. Half of the participants used 'eat less' and 'exercise' as a way of dieting, and weight gainers tried to control their weight significantly more than weight maintainers. Most participants were engaged in very little exercise and were more likely to watch TV and use a computer. The time of lunch was proven as the only factor to predict weight change in the participants. As a result of this study, an intervention to promote exercise with friends or as a group is required to makeup for the lack of exercise among young adults. Further studies are also necessary to investigate how each meal time a day relates to the amount of food eaten. (Korean J Community Nutrition 14(4) : $374{\sim}382$, 2009)
