  • The effect of Protox expression site on herbicidal resistance was investigated in wild-type and transgenic rice plants imposed by peroxidizing herbicide oxyfluorfen. The transgenic rice systems involved the plastidal expression of Arabidopsis protoporphyrinogen oxidase (Protox; AP line) and the dual expression of Myxococcus xanthus Protox in chloroplasts and mitochondria (TTS line). The oxyfluorfen-treated TTS4 line showed the lower levels of cellular leakage and malonyldialdehyde and the sustained capacity of 5-aminolevulinic acid synthesis, compared to the oxyfluorfen-treated AP and wild-type lines. During oxyfluorfen action, the TTS4 line had greater herbicide resistance than the AP1 line, indicating that the dual expression of M. xanthus Protox in chloroplasts and mitochondria prevented the accumulation of photodynamic protoporphyrin IX more effectively than the expression of Arabidopsis Protox only in chloroplasts. These results suggest that the ectopic expression of Protox in mitochondria greatly contributes to the herbicidal resistance in rice plants.

  • It cannot be argued that speech is the most natural interfacing tool between men and machines. In order to realize acceptable speech interfaces, highly advanced speech recognizers and synthesizers are inevitable. Text-to-Speech(TTS) technology has been attracting a lot of interest among speech engineers because of its own benefits. Namely, the possible application areas of talking computers, emergency alarming systems in speech, speech output devices fur speech-impaired, and so on. Hence, many researchers have made significant progresses in the speech synthesis techniques in the sense of their own languages and as a result, the quality of currently available speech synthesizers are believed to be acceptable to normal users. These are partly why the MPEG group had decided to include the TTS technology as one of its MPEG-4 functionalities. ETRI has made major contributions to the current MPEG-4 TTS among various MPEG-4 functionalities. They are; 1) use of original prosody for synthesized speech output, 2) trick mode functions fer general users without breaking synthesized speech prosody, 3) interoperability with Facial Animation(FA) tools, and 4) dubbing a moving/animated picture with lib-shape pattern information.

  • Background and Objectives: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is a form of reversible cardiomyopathy often preceded by mental or physical stressors and predominantly affects elderly women. Several cardiac and inflammatory biomarkers are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. We aimed to investigate the correlation of C-reactive protein (CRP) level with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and clinical outcomes in patients with TTS. Methods: The study included patients with discharge-diagnosis of Takotsubo through 2017-2022 from the cardiology department. Demographic, laboratory, echocardiographic, and clinical outcomes were retrospectively obtained. We investigated the relation between CRP and LVEF, length of stay (LOS), in-hospital complications, and recurrence. Results: A total of 86 patients (93% female, mean age 68.8±12.3 years) were included in the study. The median CRP level was 17.4 (interquartile range [IQR], 6.1-40.1) mg/L, and the mean LVEF was 41.5%, (IQR, 38-50%). Complications occurred in 24 (27.9%) of the patients, and the median LOS was 3 (IQR, 3-5) days. The level of CRP was associated with lower LVEF (r=-0.39, p<0.001), longer hospital stay (r=0.25, p=0.021), and recurrence. There was no correlation between CRP and in-hospital complications. In multivariate logistic regression, poor LVEF was associated with TTS recurrence (odds ratio, 1.22; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.37; p=0.001). Using linear regression, only CRP was correlated with longer LOS and lower LVEF (p<0.001). Conclusions: Among patients hospitalized with TTS, CRP level was associated with poor LVEF and prolonged hospital stay but not with in-hospital complications. Poor LVEF was also associated with TTS recurrence.

  • Autoregressive Text-to-Speech (TTS) models suffer from inference instability and slow inference speed. Inference instability occurs when a poorly predicted sample at time step t affects all the subsequent predictions. Slow inference speed arises from a model structure that forces the predicted samples from time steps 1 to t-1 to predict the sample at time step t. In this study, an end-to-end non-autoregressive fast text-to-speech model is suggested as a solution to these problems. The results of this study show that this model's Mean Opinion Score (MOS) is close to that of Tacotron 2 - WaveNet, while this model's inference speed and stability are higher than those of Tacotron 2 - WaveNet. Further, this study aims to offer insight into the improvement of non-autoregressive models.

  • Background: For terminal cancer pain management, controlled-release oral morphine (morphine sulfate tablet, MST) is a simple and convenient regimen. Recently, fentanyl transdermal therapeutic system (F-TTS, transdermal fentanyl) has been developed and became one of the alternative ways of providing adequate pain relief. This open prospective study was designed to compare the analgesic efficacy and safety of MST and transdermal fentanyl in the management of terminal cancer pain. Methods: In this open comparative and randomized study, 64 terminal cancer patients received one treatment for 15 days, controlled-release oral morphine (MST group) or fentanyl transdermal therapeutic system (F-TTS group). Daily diaries about the vital sign, visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain, opioids requirement, co-anagesics, adjuvant drugs and adverse effects were completed with 24 patients in MST group, 18 patients in F-TTS group. Results: The majority of patients in both treatment groups were late-stage cancer and their distribution was not different in both groups. Daily opioids requirement was 126.4 mg in MST uced in F-TTS group (P<0.05). The incidence of nausea, vomiting and constipation was lower in F-TTS group (P<0.05). Patients satisfaction was similar, but F-TTS patient group favored continous use of same treatment compared with MST group after the study was finished. Conclusions: Transdermal fentanyl seems to be safe and similar analgesic effect to controlled-release oral morphine for the control of the terminal cancer patients. However, transdermal fentanyl provides a simpler and more convenient especially in respect to constipation, nausea & vomiting. To determine the exact analgesic effect, cost-effectiveness and complications, controlled trials should be followed.

  • This paper describes the implementations of the first application service based on embedded Linux; Mobile Teller which uses WiBro network for data communications and CDMA network for voice communications. Currently, with the appearance of WiBro service, dual-mode terminals which support two heterogeneous networks are available. But, the development of applications which effectively use these networks for providing better service to user is rarely prepared. At Mobile Teller, when a sender on a dual-mode terminal types texts, the texts are transmitted to a TTS server located in the Internet through WiBro network. Subsequently, the TTS server converts the texts into voices and transmits the voice data to the dual-mode terminal. At last the dual-mode terminal sends the voice to the receiver through the CDMA network. In case of noisy environment or when a user has difficulty in speaking, Mobile Teller makes voice communication possible

  • Large corpus-based concatenating Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems can generate natural synthetic speech without additional signal processing. Because the improvements in the natualness, personality, speaking style, emotions of synthetic speech need the increase of the size of speech DB, it is necessary to prune the redundant speech segments in a large speech segment DB. In this paper, we propose a new method to construct a segmental speech DB for the Korean TTS system based on a clustering algorithm to downsize the segmental speech DB. For the performance test, the synthetic speech was generated using the Korean TTS system which consists of the language processing module, prosody processing module, segment selection module, speech concatenation module, and segmental speech DB. And MOS test was executed with the a set of synthetic speech generated with 4 different segmental speech DBs. We constructed 4 different segmental speech DB by combining CM1(or CM2) tree clustering method and full DB (or reduced DB). Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the size of speech DB by 23% and get high MOS in the perception test. Therefore the proposed method can be applied to make a small sized TTS.

  • Effects of coupling agents on the rheological and magnetic properties of plastic ferrite magnets were investigated. Magnetic powder used was Sr-ferrite, and binder used was polypropylene (PP), and coupling agents used were ${\gamma}$-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (A174) and isopropyl triisostearoyl titanate (TTS). It was found that the addition of coupling agents to the PP/ferrite system reduced the melt viscosity and increased the magnetic properties considerably, and the treatment with TTS showed greater effect than A174 did. By comparison with that of the untreated one, the apparent viscosities of the mixtures treated with A174 and TTS decreased 23 % and 50%, respectively, at the shear rate of $1280\; sec^{-1}$ . Untreated plastic magnets showed remanent flux density $(B_r)$ of 1.89 kG and maximum energy energy product $(BH_{max})$ of 0.84 MGOe, and A174 treated magnets showed of Br 2.25 Kg and $BH_{max}$ of 1.23 MGOe. TTS treated magnets showed $B_r$ of 2.35 kG and $BH_{max}$ of 1.33 MGOe.

  • The transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) of scopolamine has various advantages over its oral dosage forms. The ideal scopolamine TTS requires high skin permeation rate in short time after it is applied on the skin. In order to increase the initial skin permeation rate of scopolamine from TTS, various permeation enhancers were employed. Enhancers employed were fatty acids (oleic and linolenic acids), cyclic monoterpenes (menthol, camphor, cineole and limonene) and others (isopropyl myristate, sodium lauryl sulfate and glyceryl monostearate). The concentration of enhancers in the base were fixed to 5% (w/w). While fatty acids had little enhancing effect on the skin permeation of scopolamine, cyclic monoterpenes, isopropyl myristate and sodium lauryl sulfate resulted in $1.5{\sim}2.6-fold$ higher skin permeation rate of the drug compared to the control. However, lag time was not affected by enhancers studied.
