Conceptual design of a copper-bonded steam generator for SFR and the development of its thermal-hydraulic analyzing code

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) studied the sodium-water reaction (SWR) minimized steam generator for the safety of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), and selected the copper bonded steam generator (CBSG) as the optimal concept. This paper introduces the conceptual design of the CBSG and the development of the CBSG sizing analyzer (CBSGSA). The CBSG consists of multiple heat transfer modules with a crossflow heat transfer configuration where sodium flows horizontally and water flows vertically. The heat transfer modules are stacked along a vertical direction to achieve the targeted large heat transfer capacity. The CBSGSA code was developed for the thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CBSG in a multi-pass crossflow heat transfer configuration. Finally, we conducted a preliminary sizing and rating analysis of the CBSG for the trans-uranium (TRU) core system using the CBSGSA code proposed by KAERI.

  • Results of corrosion testing for different grades of titanium, copper, zinc, alluminium alloys and steels after two years of outdoor exposure under humid tropical urban and marine conditions have been presented and discussed. Mass loss and corrosion product characteristics for the exposed specimens at Hanoi testing site with high humidity and Nhatrang marine stations (at 100 and 1,000 meters distances from sea) with different airborne salinities (35.9 and $90.0mg/m^2.d$ respectively) have been selected for investigation. From time dependence of the specimen mass loss and corrosion product characteristics, the strong influence of environmental parameters upon durability for the investigated metals and alloys has been demonstrated. Only titanium alloys show high resistance to the marine conditions. All the other specimens (copper, zinc, alluminium alloys and steels) have been underwent strong deterioration under influence of aerosol salinity. Results of corrosion products analysis have been also presented for characterization of environmental impact on the metal degradation processes.

  • Transmutation characteristics of transuranics (TRU) in a transmutation reactor based on LAR (Low Aspect Ratio) tokamak as a neutron source are investigated. Optimum radial build of a transmutation reactor is found by coupled analysis of the tokamak systems and the neutron transport. The dependence of the transmutation characteristics on an aspect ratio, A in the range of 1.5 to 2.5, and on a fusion power in the range of 150 MW to 500 MW are investigated. Equilibrium fuel cycle is developed for effective transmutation and it is shown that with one unit of the transmutation reactor based on the LAR tokamak producing fusion power in the range of a few hundred MW, up to 3 PWRs (1.0 GWe capacity) can be supported with the burn-up fraction bigger than 50%.

  • The main purpose of a liquid metal reactor core thermal-hydraulic design is to efficiently extract the core thermal power by distributing the appropriate sodium coolant flow according to the power distribution in the core. The thermal-hydraulic design procedure consists of the coolant flow distribution to the sub-assemblies, the coolant/fuel temperature calculations and detailed subchannel analysis. This paper describes the LMR core thermal-hydraulic design methodology and summarizes the major design and analysis results of KALIMER breeder and breakeven cores and subassemblies. KALIMER is a 150 MWe rated (392 MWth) heterogeneous core with U-TRU-Zr ternary alloy fuel and sodium coolant.

  • The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant), located 42km east of Carlsbad, New Mexico (NM), in bedded salt 655m below the surface, is a mined repository constructed by the US DOE for the permanent disposal of transuranic (TRU) wastes generated by activities related to defence of the US since 1970. Its historical disposal operation began in March 1999 following receipt of a final permit from the State of NM after a positive certification decision for the WIPP was issued by the EPA in 1998, as the first licensed facility in the US for the deep geologic disposal of radioactive wastes. The CCA (Compliance Certification Application) for the WIPP that the DOE submitted to the EPA in 1966 was supported by an extensive performance assessment (PA) carried out by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), with so-called 1996 PA. Even though such PA methodologies could be greatly different from the way we consider for HLW disposal in Korea largely due to quite different geologic formations in which repository are likely to be located, a review on lots of works done through the WIPP PA studies could be the most important lessons that we can learn from in view of current situation in Korea where an initial phase of conceptual studies on HLW disposal has been just started. The objective of this art report is an overview of the methodology used in the recent WIPP PA to support the US DOE WIPP CCA and some relevant results completed by SNL.

Cardiopulmonary Response during Mechanical Horseback Riding Exercise in Healthy Adult (건강한 성인에서 기계승마 운동 동안의 심폐 반응)

  • In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of mechanical horseback riding exercise training for cardiopulmonary responses in 26 healthy adults (male 14, female 12) and suggest its clinical applicability. Exercise was performed using a mechanical horseback riding machine, JOBA(R) (Panasonic Electric Works, Osaka, Japan) and riding movement speed was increased from level 2 (0.73Hz), to 4 (0.9Hz), to 6 (1.03Hz), to 8 (1.2Hz), to 9 (1.3Hz) and maintained 3minutes in each level. Heart rate, blood pressure, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) were measured by respiratory gas analysis system (TruOne 2400, Parvo Medics, USA) and exercise tolerance test system(Q Stress, Cardiac Science, USA). To measure exercise intensity, metabolic equivalent (MET) were measured and percent of Heart rate reserve (%HRR), percent of peak heart rate (%peak HR) and calorie consumption were calculated. The results were analysed by SPSS 18.0. We found that the exercise intensity of mechanical horseback riding exercise using JOBA(R) for 15 minutes is moderate in healthy adult who received pre-training.

Status of Development of Pyroprocessing Safeguards at KAERI (한국원자력연구원 파이로 안전조치 기술개발 현황)

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has developed a safeguards technology for pyroprocessing based on the Safeguards-By-Design (SBD) concept. KAERI took part in a Member-State Support Program (MSSP) to establish a pyroprocessing safeguards approach. A Reference Engineering-scale Pyroprocessing Facility (REPF) concept was designed on which KAERI developed its safeguards system. Recently the REPF is being upgraded to the REPF+, a scaled-up facility. For assessment of the nuclear-material accountancy (NMA) system, KAERI has developed a simulation program named Pyroprocessing Material Flow and MUF Uncertainty Simulation (PYMUS). The PYMUS is currently being upgraded to include a Near-Real-Time Accountancy (NRTA) statistical analysis function. The Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process Safeguards Neutron Counter (ASNC) has been updated as Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) equipment for input-material accountancy, and a Hybrid Induced-fission-based Pu-Accounting Instrument (HIPAI) has been developed for the NMA of uranium/transuranic (U/TRU) ingots. Currently, performance testing of Compton-suppressed Gamma-ray measurement, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), and homogenization sampling are underway. These efforts will provide an essential basis for the realization of an advanced nuclear-fuel cycle in the ROK.

  • Purpose: Research on the behavior of using digital banking services plays an important role for banks in the context of increasingly competitive banks, not only for domestic banks but also for foreign banks. Along with the development of science and technology brings new approaches to banking industry, digital banking increases the effectiveness of banking activities. Besides, information safety brings different feeling about digital banking system. Therefore, this research evaluates the relationship between Information safety and Intention to use banking services in Vietnam. Research design, data and methodology: With 329 Vietnamese customers using digital banking, reliability test, and structural equation model (SEM) analysis method. Results: the research shows that information safety has directly effects on perceived ease of use (PU), perceived risk (RIS) of customers to digital banking services. Perceived trust (TRU) has a negative impact on RIS. Perceived of usefulness (PEU) has a positive impact on attitude towards service (ATT), and RIS has a negative impact on ATT. RIS, PEU, ATT, convenience and enterprise image have positive effects on intention to use digital banking service. Conclusions: From the research results, the authors also propose some recommendations to enhance the intention to use digital banking services in Vietnam.

  • This paper describes a Power Monitoring Unit (PMU) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) electrical system, It is designed for the PMU which performs data sensing of generator, transformer rectifier unit (TRU), battery and gear box installed in UAV and operate power ON/OFF devices of mission equipment. The PMU measures the voltage and current for the aircraft power source (generators, transformer rectifier unit and battery), measures the pressure and temperature of the gearbox, and performs the mission equipment power command received from the mission computer. The PMU was designed to meet the requirements of the UAV, and was performed through structure/thermal analysis, environmental test, EMI test and ground/flight tests.

Distribution of Zirconium Between Salt And Bismuth During A Separation From Rare Earth Elements By A Reductive Extraction

  • It was studied on the reductive extraction between the eutectic salt and Bi metal phases. The solutes were zirconium and the rare earth elements, where zirconium was used as the surrogate for the transuranic(TRU) elements. All the experiments were performed in a glove box filled with argon gas. Two types of experimental conditions were used -high and low initial solute concentrations in salt. Li-Bi alloy was used as a reducing agent to reduce the high chemical activity of Li. The reductive extraction characteristics were examined using ICP, XRD and EPMA analysis. Zirconium was successfully separated from the rare earth elements by the reductive extraction method. The LiF-NaF-KF system was favorable among the fluoride salt systems, whereas the LiCl-KCl system was favorable among the chloride salt systems. When the solute concentrations were high, intermetallic compounds were found near the salt-metal interface.
