  • The study proposed a new type of bus information, Real-time Bus Crowdedness (RBC) information, to meet various demands of users and improve the convenience level of using public transportation, while existing bus information provided by bus information systems(BIS) were limited to bus operating information such as predicted bus arrival time. To analyze the impacts of providing the proposed RBC information, stated preference(SP) survey was performed and a methodology of disaggregate analysis (e.g., binary logit) was applied to develop passenger choice models. Additionally, passenger choice models incorporating the heterogeneity of different user groups(i.e., by age or trip purposes) were developed to evaluate the different responses on RBC information. The results showed that providing RBC information was significantly related to users' bus choices and the responses of user groups were significantly different, especially the age group of more then 60 was most affected by the RBC information on their bus choices. Also trip purposes were significantly related to users' bus choices, for instance the impacts of providing RBC information was bigger for non-business trips(leisure/meet friend/personal business, shopping, hospital) compared to business trip.

  • The aging of population stems from the decline of birth and death rates. A sudden aging society results in a variety of social issues like the poverty, role loss, alienation, health problems, etc. of the elderly. What counts in solving these issue is to make good use of the leisure time of the elderly. Leisure activities in the elderly help maintain and improve their mental and physical health, and have a great influence on improving the quality of life in the elderly. In addition, they contribute to building up a healthy social structure by forming a social intimacy. Despite these positive aspects of leisure activities, however, multiple factors prevent the leisure activities of the elderly from being actively pursued. In this respect, since there is a need to take a look at how the varied leisure activities of the elderly expose themselves in different regions, this study made an investigation so as to see what characteristics and differences each region has in the leisure activities of the elderly 65 or above. As a result, the following facts were found out: the elderly in Seoul enjoy a relatively wide range of leisure activities compared with other regions; the elderly in Gwangju spend their time mainly at home: and the elderly in the Goheung region take part in leisure activities aimed at promoting friendship. It was also revealed that there are differences among different regions in the areas of leisure activities, including the types of participation in leisure activities, the types of leisure activities at and out of home, the purpose and satisfaction of leisure activities and the frequency of domestic trips.

  • This study is for the genetic differences of two closed asbestos mines from Jeongjeon and Ocheon areas in Boryoung, Chungnam. They are mined asbestos for past several decades. Host rocks are serpentinites for Jeongjeon mine and dolomites for Ocheon mine. Asbestos samples and their host rocks are collected from the field trips and examined with microscopes and FESEM, and analysed with XRD and EDX to confirm for the type and/or compositions of the minerals. The asbestos occur as layers, cracks and fractures assummed as a pathway of the hydrothermal water, but show different characteristics. The serpentinites from the Jeongjeon mine contain chrysotile, tremolite and actinolite asbestos. Non-asbestos minerals including tremolite and actinolite were also found. The chrysotiles occur as a cross fiber or slip fiber at veins and along cracks of several mm to cm thickness. Tremolite and actinolite asbestos occur along cracks and fractures of several cm to ten cm thickness. It suggests that the asbestos from Jeongjeon area were formed by the reactions between serpentinite and hydrothermal water. The dolomites of the Ocheon mine only contain tremolite and actinolite asbestos. The asbestos occur along layers, cracks and fractures, suggestive of asbestos from Ocheon area formed by the reactions between dolomite and hydrothermal waters influxed along layers, cracks and fractures. Overall results suggest that two asbestos mines showing different host rocks are located in a Boryoung area. They show a different type of asbestos minerals, reflecting variety of petrogeneses.

  • The current research aims at classifying the bus stops as transfer center in order to establish the rational bus transfer systems. Existing research typically identifies characteristics of demands for bus stops and land use surrounding the bus stops and classifies and profiles the bus stops. A common problem with this type of research is that the results with cross-sectional characteristics of land use and bus stop usage do not capture the details of trip chain, the fundamental characteristics of the trips with transfer. This paper therefore examines bus stop classifications with such variables as transport mode chains, intermediate stop chains and timing chains. The analysis on the data collected on Monday 20 April 2009 for passengers of Gyeong-gi bus results in a clear classification among bus stops in terms of such trip chain variables. The research would provide useful information for the decision support of transfer stops location choice and infrastructure design.

  • We investigated the flora of Imja-do(Isl.), an island of the Shinan archipelago, located in Imja-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jollanamo-do and discussed the vascular plants found there. Twenty-four separate field trips (100days) were completed from August of 1997 to October of 2009. As a result, we identified the distribution of 526 taxa in Imja-do(Isl.), comprising 112 families, 331 genera, 463 species, 1 subspecies, 60 varieties, and 2 forms. There are a total of 78 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants and one taxon of level II endangered species, Millettia japonica, as designated by the Korean Ministry of the Environment. The floristic regional indicator plants are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Utricularia bifida, two taxa of level IV such as Cladium chinense, 14 taxa of level III such as Aletris spicata, three taxa of level II, and 55 taxa of level I. In addition, one endangered species (EN), Nymphoides coreana, five vulnerable species (VU),such as Ilex cornuta, and three near-threatened species (NT) such as Utricula riaracemosa, were found in the investigated area. The plants of Imja-do(Isl.) are classified into four types based on the plant geographical origin, as follows: 1) boreal plants advancing southward in a glacial period, 2) temperate plants spreading eastward from the Himalayas and China to Japan passing through the south coast of Korea, 3) subtropical plants, and 4) indigenously developed endemic species of the warm-temperate region of East Asia.

  • The life and astronomical activity of Lee Deok-Seong (李德星, 1720-1794) was studied using various historical sources, including the astronomical almanac, Seungjeongwon-Ilgi (Daily records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon dynasty), and the Gwansang-Gam's logbooks during Joseon dynasty (A.D. 1392-1910). We present the results of the study including the following main findings. First, from the investigation of Lee's family tree, we find that a number of his relatives were also astronomers, notably Samryeok-Gwan (三曆官, the post of calendrical calculation). Second, we find that he took part in the compilation of an annual astronomical almanac over a period of at least 16 years. His major achievements in the astronomy of the Joseon dynasty were to establish a new method of calendar-making calculation and to bring astronomical materials to the Joseon court through a visit to China. The Joseon dynasty enforced the Shixianli (時憲曆, a Chinese calendar made by Adam Shall) in 1654 without fully understanding the calendar. So an astronomer and an envoy were dispatched to China in order to master the intricacies of the calendar and to learn as much of Western science as was available in that time and place. Lee Deok-Seong worked at the Gwansang-Gam (觀象監, Royal Astronomical Bureau) during the reigns of King Yeongjo (英祖) and Jeongjo (正祖). As best as we can ascertain in relation with the calculations in the Shixian calendar, Lee visited China four times. During his trips and interactions, he learned a new method for calendar-making calculations, and introduced many Western-Chinese astronomical books to Joseon academia. Lee greatly improved the accuracy of calendrical calculations, even while simplifying the calculation process. With these achievements, he finally was promoted to the title of Sungrok-Daebu (崇祿大夫), the third highest grade of royal official. In conclusion, history demonstrates that Lee Deok-Seong was one of the most outstanding astronomers in the late-Joseon dynasty.

  • This paper uses the diary entitled Kieo, which was kept by Ryu Hyeong-eop for 38 years, to analyze the active space of small-scale Yangban landlords. Ryu lived during the period spanning from the end of the Taehan Empire through the colonial era. The researcher classified the contents of Kieo into different sections which were divided according to different stages of the writer's life, his objectives, destinations, and periods, and based on the writer's life-cycle, strived to recreate his spatial activities. As a result, researcher was able to ascertain that Ryu's spatial activities gradually increased, and that his active space also continuously expanded. Ryu's active space during his youth was narrow and centered around certain specific places. However, this active space gradually increased as time went by. It was during the middle stages of his life that the volume of his spatial activities was the heaviest. In addition, the objectives of his outings also became more diversified over time. This change was originated in the larger changes in his roles within the family and community, as well as by the changes in the periodic situation. Moreover, the regional sphere of Ryu's outings, including his day and over nights trips, allowed the researcher to form a better understanding of the daily living area of the Yangban.

  • This study focuses on the actual condition and level of residents' participation in the case of Jinmok village, located in Jeonnam province Jangheung-gun Hwejin-myeon, and presents suggestions to inspire residents' awareness and enhance participation. This village has been developing a Green Rural Tourism Village Building Project under management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Consequently, the importance of residents recognizing they are a "community" has been emphasized as well as promoting the residents cooperation as a community. In addition, it was necessary to research ways to inspire the village to realize the ultimate goal of building rural tourism village. For this, in the beginning of the project, profitable work needed to be provided for the residents to participate in. Constructive participation by all residents is essential in each stage of the project s development. Operating a farm stay or running lodging facilities are options that could be considered. Moreover, it is imperative to immediately establish a awareness about the importance of participation in those who might have a negative or impartial opinion about the project, by providing education. The most efficient way to encourage residents' participation is to support various opportunities for education and field trips. Through these efforts, the residents are able to raise their level of education and develop their man-power as well. Once more, providing an incentive for residents' reliance is the kernel of the project. Considering the state of Korean rural areas, which are rapidly aging and becoming depopulated, green tourism can be a practical alternative for continuing rural development.
