The mechanical and electrical properties of hot-pressed and annelaed $\beta$-SiC+39vol.% $ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6:4 wt%). In this microstructures, no reactions and elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with equiaxed $ZrB_2$ grains were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$. The properties of the $\beta$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ composites with 4wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ at R.T. are as follows: fracture toughness is 6.37 MPa.m1/2, electical resistivity is $1.51\times10^{-4}\Omega \cdot\textrm{cm}$ and the relative density is 98.6% of the theoretical density. The fracture toughness of the $\beta$-SiC+39 vol.% $ZrB_2$ composites were weakly decreased with increasing amount of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives. Internal stresses due to the difference of $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ thermal expansion coefficient and elastic modulus mismatch appeared to contribute to fracture toughening in $\beta$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites.
A certain amount of MBS rubber was added to improve toughness of PVC which has a strong tendency of being brittle, producing a mixture, PVC/MBS, from which test specimens were prepared. PVC has strong chemical resistance, oil resistance, frame retardancy and high mechanical strength. Also, it is relatively inexpensive to produce, but shows weakness to impact and difficult for processing. MBS, a typical toughening agent for PVC is generally known, when added in a small amount, to improve impact resistance and to minimize difficulties during the processing of the PVC without adversely affecting the positive aspects of the PVC. In this investigation, attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic and damping constants of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests in this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. Generally, the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease while the damping capacity improves when MBS rubber was added.
Ductile cast iron has good ductility and toughness, for the graphite morphology is spheroidal. It has been reported that the strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron was resulted from the modification of matrix structure by the heat treatment or the addition of alloying elements. In this study, effects of various special heat treatments (cyclic heat treatment and intermediate heat treatment) and Ni addition on the toughness and strength of the austempered ductile cast iron were studied. The results obtained from this study were as follows : 1. The amount of fine pearlite was increased with the Ni content and the number of cycle in cyclic heat treatment. 2. When the specimens treated and not by special heat treatment at 820 was austempered, in the former the austenite was formed on grain boundary entirely, but in the latter on grain boundary partially. 3. The impact energy was decreased with the Ni content, because the coarisen austenite pools formed with the Ni content was transformed into martensite during quenching. 4. The mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron containing 2%Ni treated cyclic heat treatment(5 cycles)was very excellent in handness 99(HRB), impact energy 12(kg-m) maximum fracture load 1500(kg-f).
To investigate the effects of Mo addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al_2O_3$ ceramics, two kinds of Mo particles with average sizes of 2-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 6-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used as additives. It was shown that Mo particles inhibited the grain growth of Al_2O_3$, and the smaller Mo particles were more effective. In case of 2-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Mo dispersion, the bending strength and the fracture toughness were increased. Dispersion of 6-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ MO did not increase the strength but improved the fracture toughness a little. The toughening mechanisms of Al_2O_3$-Mo composites are thought to be the crack deflection and microcracking mechanisms.
Mechanical property enhancing mechanisms of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ two phase ceramic composites were studied for several compositions of different $ZrO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ ratio. Microstructural analysis of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_3$(pure) composites indicated that pre-existing microcrack due to larger $ZrO_2$ particle at grain boundary extended along alumina grain boundaries within process zone. Microcracks also nucleated when very small $ZrO_2$ particles at the grain boundaries transformed to monoclinic phase at near of main crack tip. These types of microcracks could contribute to the toughening achieved by creating additional crack surface area during crack propagation. Microstructural analyses also showed that the average grain size and abnormal grain size of $Al_2O_3$ were decreased with increasing $ZrO_2$ vol% in $Al_2O_3$ matrix. As a result it could be concluded as follows In TEX>$Al_2O_3-ZrO_3$(pure) system 1. Microcrack nucleation (stress-induced microcracking) and extension was effective mechanism for absorpiton of fracture energy 2, More narrow distribution and smaller grain size of $Al_2O_3$ due to $ZrO_2$particles mainly contributed to main-tatin the strength and hardness.
In this paper, the inter-lamina shear strength (ILSS) of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) reinforced carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and thin-ply composites were verified under low earth orbit (LEO) space environment. CFRP, MWNT reinforced CFRP, thin-ply CFRP and MWNT reinforced thin-ply CFRP were tested after aging by using accelerated ground simulation equipment. The used ground simulation equipment can simulate high vacuum ($2.5{\times}10^{-6}torr$), atomic oxygen (AO, $9.15{\times}10^{14}atoms/cm^2{\cdot}s$), ultraviolet light (UV, 200 nm wave length) and thermal cycling ($-70{\sim}100^{\circ}C$) simultaneously. The duration of aging experiment was twenty hours, which is an equivalent duration to that of STS-4 space shuttle condition. After the aging experiment, ILSS were measured at room temperature ($27^{\circ}C$), high temperature ($100^{\circ}C$) and low temperature ($-100^{\circ}C$) to verify the effect of operation temperature. The MWNT and thin-ply shows good improvement of ILSS at ground condition especially with the thin-ply. And after LEO exposure large degradation of ILSS was observed at MWNT added composite due to the thermal cycle. And the degradation rate was much higher under the high temperature condition. But, at the low temperature condition, the ILSS was largely recovered due to the matrix toughening effect.
In order to increase the toughness of ZTA(zirconia toughened alumina) ceramics, the present study focused on rearrangement and densification of particles according to the particle size of the parent material. When rough alumina was used for production of ZTA, densification behavior was observed in the specimen sintered at a temperature over $1550^{\circ}C$. However, it was found that the densification behavior was occurred in the specimen sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ when fine alumina powder was used. High relative density exceeding 98% was obtained when fine alumina powder was mixed with 15 wt% of 3Y-TZP and sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$. Also, a hardness of 1820.2 Hv was obtained when a specimen containing 10 wt% of 3Y-TZP was sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$. In the case of 3Y-TZP containing rough alumina powder that had been sintered the hardness value was around 1720.3 Hv. It was predicted that an improved toughening effect in ZTA could be achieved by using finer alumina powder as the parent material.
The toughness and morphology of epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) cured with of tris (dimethylaminomethy]) phenol(DMP-30) and castor oil (CO) as a toughening modifier have been studied. Mixtures of CO and an epoxy resin showed a higher miscibility than the classical CTBN modified epoxy resin. The glass transition temperature($T_g$) was decreased with the CO content and the cure temperature. It is interpreted that the networks of epoxy matrix obtained at high temperature are apparently looser and more flexible due to the lower crosslinking density. The toughness was slightly increased with the CO content at $40^{\circ}C$ of curing temperature. The toughness increased with increasing the cure temperature and CO content.
Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. Also, it has been reported that, additional strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron can be obtainded from the proper combination of matrix structures by the heat treatment and addition of alloying elements. In this study the effect of special heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Ni, Mo) on the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures, strength and toughness of ductile cast iron were studied systematically. In water quenching from $770^{\circ}C$, the martensite volume(%) increased, but the ferrite volume(%) decreased with increment of Ni content. In as cast, pearlite volume(%) and hardness increased with increment of Mo and Ni contents. And with the increment of the destabilization austempering holding time, the bainite volume(%) increased but the martensite volume(%) decreased. As destabilization austempering holding time is same, bainite volume(%) decreased, martensite increased with the increment of Ni and Mo contents. The hardness and tensile strength decreased, but impact energy increased with the decrease of Ni and Mo contents, and increment of holding time of destabilization austempering treatment.
It is reported that the toughness and safety margins of the SA106 Gr.C main steam line piping steel is reduced due to dynamic strain aging (DSA) at the reactor operating temperature for Leak-Before-Break (LBB) application. In this study, intercritical annealing in two-phase ($\alpha$+${\gamma}$)region was performed to investigate the possibility of improving the toughness and reducing DSA susceptibility. The manifestations of DSA were still observed in the tensile tests of the annealed specimens. However, the ductility loss caused by DSA was smaller than that in the as-received material. Furthermore, the intercritical annealing was able to increase the Charpy impact toughness by 1.5 times compared to as-received. With the heat treatment, we could obtain microstructural changes such as the cleaner retained ferrite, increased ferrite content and somewhat finer grain size. It is considered that the reduced DSA was induced by cleaner retained ferrite, which in turn resulted in higher impact toughness in addition to the general toughening due to finer grain sizes and increased ferrite content.
