Recent Advance in High Pressure Induction Plasma Source

  • An induction thermal plasma system have been newly designed for advanced operation with a pulse modulated mode to control the plasma power in time domain and to create non-equilibrium effects such as fast quenching of the plasma to produce new functional materials in high rate. The system consists of MOSFET power supply with a maximum power of 50 kW with a frequency of 460 kHz, an induction plasma torch with a 10-turns coil of 80 mm diameter and 150 mm length and a vacuum chamber. The pulse modulated plasma was successfully generated at a plasma power of 30 kW and a high pressure of 100 kPa, with taking the on and off time as 10 ms, respectively. Measurements were carried out on the time-dependent spectral lines emitted from Ar species. The dynamic behavior of plasma temperature in a pulse cycle was estimated by the Boltzmann plot and the excitation temperature of Ar atom was found to be changed periodically from around 0.5 to 1.7 eV during the cycle. Two application regions of the induction thermal plasma newly generated were introduced to material processing with high rate synthesis based on non equilibrium effects, and to the finding of new arc quenching gases coming necessary for power circuit breaker, which is friendly with earth circumstance alternative to SF6 gas.

  • 전북대학교 고온플라즈마응용센터에 구축된 0.4 MW 급 분절형 아크 가열 풍동은 초음속 비행과 우주 비행체의 지구 재진입 조건에서의 유사한 환경 모사가 가능하다. 극한상황에서의 고엔탈피 플라즈마 유동은 내열재료의 삭마 거동 연구와 고온재료의 성능평가에 중요한 역할을 수행 할 수 있다. 이러한 고엔탈피 초음속 플라즈마 유동장의 플라즈마 특성 평가 및 진단은 플라즈마와 내열재료의 상호작용 연구에 중요한 변수를 갖는다. 이를 위해 열유속 탐침, 쐐기 탐침, 고속 카메라 및 광분광기 등의 측정장비를 사용하여 열유속, 초음속 플라즈마의 속도, 플라즈마의 방전특성을 관찰하였다. 본 실험에서 사용된 분절형 아크 토치는 마하 3의 속도 유지하기 위해 토치 내부 압력 4 bar, 반응기 압력 40 mbar를 유지하였다. 토치에 공급되는 Ar(5%)+Air(95%)의 방전기체의 유량은 15 g/s 로 토치에 주입 되었다. 또한, 플라즈마 토치에 가해지는 입력전류는 200A ~ 350A로 10MJ/kg 이상의 엔탈피를 갖는 초음속 플라즈마 유동을 형성하였다.

Development of a Graphic Simulation Modeller for Robot Welding Process Planning (로보트 용접 공정 계획을 위한 Graphic Simulation Modeller의 개발)

  • Presented in this paper is a procedure of developing graphical simulation software for planning robot welding processes. Welding is by far the highest application area for industrial robots, and it has been in great need of such a simulator in designing robot work cells, in justifying the economics of robot welding and in planning robotized welding operations. The model of a robot welding cell consists of four components: They are an welding structure which is a collection of plates to be welded, a positioner to hold the welding structure, a robot with a weld torch, and a set of welding lines (in case of arc welding). Welding structure is modeled by using the reference plane concept and is represented as boundary file which is widely used in solid modeling. Robot itself is modeled as a kinematic linkage system. Also included in the model are such technical constraints as weaving patterns and inclination allowances for each weld joint type. An interactive means is provided to input the welding structure and welding lines on a graphics terminal. Upon completion of input, the program displays the welding structure and welding lines and calculates the center of mass which is used in determining positioner configurations. For a given positioner and robot configuration, the welding line segments that can be covered by the robot are identified, enabling to calculate the robot weld ratio and cycle time. The program is written in FORTRAN for a VAX computer with a Tektronix 4114 graphic terminal.

PREPARATION OF DIAMOND FILM BY DC THERMAL PLASMA (직류 열 플라즈마를 이용한 다이아몬드 합성에 관한 연구)

  • A DC thermal plasma system has been designed and constructed to obtain diamond films from a mixture of CH4 and H2. The effects of the deposition conditions such as substrate temperature ($850^{\circ}C-1050^{\circ}C$), gas mixing ratio (0.5-1.5% CH4 in H2), chamber pressure (50 - 200 Torr), axial magnetic field (0 - 900 Gauss) on the diamond film properties such as morphology, purity of the film and deposition rate, etc. have been examined with the aids of Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy. Under optimum conditions, high quality diamond films can be obtained with high deposition rate (>$1{\mu}m/min$). Both of the growth rate and' particle size increased with the substrate temperature but the morphology changed from the faceted to unshaped when the temperature deviates its proper range. Furthermore, higher growth rates of $1.5{\mu}m/min$ can be obtained by applying an axial magnetic field to plasma torch. The observed values of interplanar spacings of diamond were in a good agreement with the values reported in ASTM data and all deposits have the diamond peak of $1332.5\;cm^{-1}$ in the Raman Spectra.

  • Plasmas can be made by electrical discharge on earth. Most of the plasmas on earth have been generated in low pressure environments where the pressure is less than one millionth of the atmospheric pressure. However, there are many plasma applications which require high pressure plasmas. Therefore, scientists start research on plasma generation at high pressure to avoid use of expensive vacuum equipments. Large-volume inexpensive plasmas are needed in the areas of material processing, environmental protection and improvement, efficient energy source and applications, etc. We therefore developed new methods of plasma generations at high pressure and carried out research of applying these plasmas to high tech industries representing 21 century. These research fields will play pivotal roles in material, environmental and energy science and technology in future.

  • The air-conditioning industry is closely related to types of lifestyles, climate, and products. With the improvement of national income, the pursuit of pleasant living and working environments, and South Korea's four seasons and distinct climatic conditions, demand for air conditioning has increased. In addition, the industry is becoming increasingly precise and cooperative, and the increase in the domestic production of sophisticated air conditioning and continued growth of future industrial cooperation are expected to rapidly rise. Accordingly, the study of air piping systems can improve the productivity and quality of products and cost savings and can achieve vibration reduction. Additionally, using a heat treatment furnace for copper tube annealing treatment reduces the risk of using an oxy-acetylene torch.

  • In this study, the characteristics of anti-pollution coatings on glass substrates through annealing treatment were investigated. To investigate the change of properties by coating method and number of annealing treatment, after the anti-pollution coating was performed on the surface of glass substrate in three ways, the annealing treatment was performed by setting three kinds of annealing treatment conditions. The annealing treatment method is a torch using gas, which is advantage in that it can be installed directly on the site in an easy way compared with a annealing treatment process which is generally difficult. The anti-pollution properties, contact angle, transmittance, hardness, and adhesion of films on glass substrate were measured under 9 conditions of combination of coating methods and annealing treatment conditions. It was confirmed that as the number of annealing treatment increases, the anti-pollution property of the film synthesized on glass substrate becomes better.

High-Speed Deposition of Diamond Films by DC Plasma Jet (직류 플라즈마 제트를 이용한 고속 다이아몬드 막 증착기술)

  • A low pressure DC plasma jet has been used to obtain diamond films from a mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ with high deposition rate (>1$\mu\textrm{m}$/min). The effects of the deposition conditions such as torch geometry, substrate temperature, gas mixing ratio, chamber pressure, axial magnetic field on the diamond film properties such as morphology, purity, uniformity of the film and deposition rate, etc. have been examined with the aid of Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, and Raman Spectroscopy. Both the growth rate and particle size increased rapidly for low methane concentrations but saturated and the morphology changed from octahedral to cubic structure when the concentration exceeded 1.0 %. Higher growth rates (>1.5${\mu}m$/min) can be obtained by applying an axial magnetic field to the DC plasma jet. Diamond obtained from the magnetized plasma jet also shows a sharp peak at 1332.5$cm^{-1}$ in the Raman Spectra and this result implies that higher growth rate with a good quality diamond films can he obtained by applying an external magnetic field to the plasma jet.

Decentralized Control Design for Welding Mobile Manipulator

  • This paper presents a decentralized motion control method of welding mobile manipulators which use for welding in many industrial fields. Major requirements of welding robots are accuracy, robust, and reliability so that they can substitute for the welders in hazardous and worse environment. To do this, the manipulator has to take the torch tracking along a welding trajectory with a constant velocity and a constant heading angle, and the mobile-platform has to move to avoid the singularities of the manipulator. In this paper, we develop a kinematic model of the mobile-platform and the manipulator as two separate subsystems. With the idea that the manipulator can avoid the singularities by keeping its initial configuration in the welding process, the redundancy problem of system is solved by introducing the platform mobility to realize this idea. Two controllers for the mobile-platform and the manipulator were designed, respectively, and the relationships between two controllers are the velocities of two subsystems. Control laws are obtained based on the Lyapunov function to ensure the asymptotical stability of the system. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

A Study on the Effect of Welding Conditions on Fume Generation Rate in $CO_2$ Flux Cored Arc Welding ($CO_2$ FCAW에서 용접조건이 Fume발생량에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The use of flux cored arc welding(FCAW) process has grown dramatically since it has been developed because of the remarkable operating characteristics and the resulting weld properties. The feature that distinguishes the FCAW process from other arc welding processes is the enclosure of fluxing ingredients within a continuously fed tubular electrode. The benefits of FCAW process are the increased productivity due to continuous wire feeding, the metallurgical effects derived from the reactions with flux, and the shapes of weld bead formed by slag. However, FCAW process causes the problem in working environment because it generates much more fume than other welding processes. Recently, the welding fume became a hot issue in the field after some welders were diagnosed as manganese toxcosis and siderosis. This study was started to investigate the characteristics of welding fume and utilize the results from the investigation to protect the welders from welding fume. As a first step, the effect of welding conditions on the fume generation rate(FGR) were investigated during FCAW process with $CO_2$ shielding. The considered welding conditions were welding current, arc voltage, travel speed, contact tube to work distance, and torch angle. The results showed that FGR was affected by all of these factors.
