  • In this paper, various influence factors on the impact-echo test which is an effective method in characterizing defects such as such as the delamination in the concrete structures were studied. The side to thickness ratio(a/h), the relative position of impacting and sensing points over the delamination that have great effects on the flexural and impact-echo(thickness) modes were investigated and examined by the parametric finite element analysis. As a result, the flexural modes dominate in the case of a/h > 2 and the thickness mode was more evident when a/h < 2. With regard to the relative position of impact source and sensing point to the defect, the flexural modes dominate even when either the loading or sensing point was over the delamination defect. However, the thickness mode prevails when both the impacting and sensing points are over the solid region beyond the delamination area.

  • The aim of this study is to compare measurements of abdominal muscle thickness using ultrasonography imaging (USI) to those using a special transducer head device, during five different trunk stabilization exercises, ultimately to determine which exercise led to the greatest muscle thickness. Thirty eight healthy subjects participated in this cross-sectional study. The five types of trunk stabilization - i.e., a sit-up on the supine, an upper and lower extremity raise with quadruped on the prone, a leg raise in sitting on the ball, trunk rolling on the ball, and balance using sling on the prone position - were each performed with an abdominal draw. The thickness of the abdominal muscle - including the transverse abdominal (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) - was measured by USI with a special transducer head device, at rest and then at contraction in each position. Data were analyzed using one-way repeated ANOVA with the level of significance set at ${\alpha}$=.05. The results were as follows: 1) the TrA thickness was statistically significant (p<.05), whereas the IO and EO thicknesses were not (p>.05); 2) among the five types of trunk stabilization, TrA thickness significantly increased with the balance using a sling in the prone position, (p<.05), whereas no significant difference was noted for the four types of trunk stabilization (p>.05); 3) reliability data showed that there was a high degree of consistency among the measurements taken using the special transducer head device (ICC=.92). In conclusion, the balance using a sling in the prone position was more effective than any of the four other types of trunk stabilization in increasing TrA thickness in healthy subjects.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the thickness of corn flakes produced by pressurized steam chamber (PSC) on rumen fermentation characteristics and nutrient degradability in Hanwoo and Holstein cows. Corn flakes were treated by PSC, in three groups based on corn flake thickness: < 2.5 mm (T1), 2.5-3.0 mm (T2), and > 3.0 mm (T3). Corn flake thickness significantly influenced pH (p < 0.01) and propionate concentration (p < 0.05) and slightly but not significantly influenced acetate, butyrate, and total-volatile fatty acids (T-VFA) concentrations. The dry matter (DM) degradability increased significantly with a reduction in corn flake thickness (p < 0.01), being significantly greater in T1 and T2 than T3 groups (p < 0.01) and similar between T1 and T2 groups throughout whole incubation time. Also, starch degradability was the lowest in T3 groups than others (p < 0.01). Thus, the present results showed that considering the production efficiency and economic feasibility, the optimal thickness of corn flakes produced in a PSC is recommended to be 2.5-3.0 mm.

  • The incidence of cardiovascular disease increases rapidly after 40's. The thickness of the epicardial adipose tissue was measured to analyze the risk factors affecting the thickness change. We present the cut off value for the epicardial adipose tissue thickness for high impacted variables. For the study, 547 patients underwent echocardiography, epicardial adipose tissue thickness, body mass index, abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and diabetes mellitus were used as analytical variables. As a result, multiple regression analysis of age group showed that diabetes mellitus was highly influential in all age group, so we could predict the cut off value for the epicardial adipose tissue thickness for diabetes mellitus. As a result of ROC curve analysis, cut off value of 7.44 mm was obtained with sensitivity of 79.6% and specificity of 60.6% for diab etes variab le. Logistic regression analysis b ased on this value showed that the risk for diab etes increased 6 times with each increase in the thickness of the epicardial adipose tissue. Among the various obesity indexes, epicardial adipose tissue is used as an important index especially to prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we suggest that the use of echocardiography as a routine screening method for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, which is rapidly increasing in patients over 40's age, will enable more effective monitoring. Radiation is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium.

  • This study attempted to investigate the effect of panel thickness on the horizontal density distribution (HDD) of medium density fiberboard (MDF) in a destructive way. Full size MDF panels with five different thicknesses such as 2 mm, 4.5 mm, 9 mm, 18 mm and 30 mm were cut into two different specimen sizes, i.e., $500{\times}500\;mm$ and $120{\times}120\;mm$ to measure the HDD. In general, the overall density of MDF panel diminished as the thickness increased, showing the highest density for the thinnest MDF panels. The HDD variation was significant for the samples of smaller specimen size ($120{\times}120\;mm$). MDF panel thickness significantly influenced to the HDD, which increased as the thickness decreased. In addition, the thinner panels showed much wider range in the HDD than those of thicker panels. The coefficient of variation (COV) of HDD also followed a similar trend to the panel density as the thickness increased. In summary, MDF panel thickness had a significant impact on the HDD within a panel. The sample size also showed a considerable effect to the HDD of MDF panels.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of the subacromial bursoscopy with glenohumeral air infusion technique for detection of the full thickness tear which we used to think as a partial thickness tear, because it was hidden by bursal tissue. Materials and methods : We chose 65 cases and divided them into 2 groups. The group I was 18 cases with partial thickness rotator cuff tears on glenohumeral arthroscopic evaluation, and the group 2 was 37 cases with full thickness rotator cuff tears which were repaired. We inflated the glenohumeral Joint with 50-100ml of air and observed air bubble leakage simultaneously on bursoscopy. Results : In group I, we could detect air leakage in 3 cases and found that it was full thickness tear. In group II, 2 cases revealed too much air leakage proved that it was incomplete repair and was in need of additional suture. Conclusion : Air infusion technique is though to be a valuable method in differentiation between the partial and full thickness tear and for evaluation of the security of the repair.

  • This paper analyzed the phenomenon of drain induced barrier lowering(DIBL) for the ratio of channel length vs. thickness of asymmetric double gate(DG) MOSFET. DIBL, the important secondary effect, is occurred for short channel MOSFET in which drain voltage influences on potential barrier height of source, and significantly affects on transistor characteristics such as threshold voltage movement. The series potential distribution is derived from Poisson's equation to analyze DIBL, and threshold voltage is defined by top gate voltage of asymmetric DGMOSFET in case the off current is 10-7 A/m. Since asymmetric DGMOSFET has the advantage that channel length and channel thickness can significantly minimize, and short channel effects reduce, DIBL is investigated for the ratio of channel length vs. thickness in this study. As a results, DIBL is greatly influenced by the ratio of channel length vs. thickness. We also know DIBL is greatly changed for bottom gate voltage, top/bottom gate oxide thickness and channel doping concentration.

  • We aims to perform comparative analysis on the dose area and image qualities varying on the slice thickness when using Automatic Exposure Controller (AEC) and manual exposure; thus, it wants to suggest a measure to reduce exposure dose by setting the optimal examination condition for each slice thickness. The method was to set the thickness as Thin, Normal, and Heavy adult and evaluate the dose area, spatial resolution, low contrast resolution, Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) according to each slice thickness by using the AEC and the manual exposure controller. The dose area according to each slice thickness all increased both when using the AEC and the manual exposure. However, the manual exposure showed lower dose area product than the AEC. Spatial resolutions and low contrast resolutions were all observed to be higher than the evaluation standard. Also, the SNR and CNR of each thickness all increased when using the AEC. When using the manual exposure, SNR and CNR increased in all cases other than the Heavy Adult. Consequently, the Thin and Normal Adult showed dose reduction about 2 times when using the manual exposure controller, while ensuring the image quality. Heavy adult was able to maintain good image quality by using AEC.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of modified motor developmental intervention on the SCM muscle thickness and the range of motion (ROM) of neck in subjects with congenital muscular torticollis. METHODS: Thirteen subjects who had congenital muscular torticollis were participated in this study and they were offered the modified motor developmental interventions for 8 weeks by pediatric physical therapist. SCM thickness of affected and non-affected side and ROM of neck rotation were collected between before and after intervention. SCM thickness was measured by using Ultrasound Unit (IU 22, Ultrasound system, Philips, Netherlands) and ROM of neck was measured by using the goniometer (Arthrodial protractor, North coast, USA). Data were represented as means ${\pm}SD$. Paired t-test was used to determine the effect of interventions on the SCM muscle thickness and neck ROM. RESULTS: SCM thickness of affected side was significantly decreased after the modified motor developmental interventions and that of non-affected side was generally increased but it was not significantly difference between pre and post interventions. ROM of neck rotation and lateral flexion was significantly increased after interventions. CONCLUSION: These results suggested that the modified motor developmental interventions could improve the recovery of SCM muscle thickness and neck ROM.

  • The structural and functional disorder of a detrusor induces a bladder hypertrophy and degenerates a bladder muscle gradually by preventing normal urination. Thus, the thickness of the bladder wall has been increased in proportion to the degree of bladder outlet obstruction. In this study, the mechanical characteristics of the detrusor is analyzed for the physical properties and the thickness changes of the bladder muscle using a mathematically analytic method. In order to obtain the mechanical property of the bladder muscle, the tensile test of porcine bladder tissue is performed because its property is similar to that of human. The result of tensile test is applied to the mathematically model as Mooney Rivlin coefficients which represent the hyperelastic material. The model of the bladder is defined as the spherical shape with the initial volume of 50ml. The principal stress and strain according to the thickness are analyzed. Also, computer simulations for three types of the material property for the model of the bladder are performed based on the fact that the stiffness of the bladder is weakened as the progress of the benign prostatic hyperplasia. As a result, the principal stress is 341kPa at the initial thickness of 2.2mm, and is 249kPa at 6.5mm. As the bladder wall thickness increases, the principal stress decreases. The principal stress and strain decrease as the stiffness of the bladder decreases under the same thinkness.
