This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ginseng and Schizandra chinensis on the quality characteristics of kimchi stored for 40 days at $4^{\circ}C$ after kimchi was fermented for 1 day at $25^{\circ}C$. pH and reducing sugar of GS(Kimchi added with extract powder of fine ginseng root and Schizandra chinensis juice) were the highest in the early part of storage but pH and reducing sugar of G(Kimchi added with extract powder of fine ginseng root) were the highest from 11th storage day. Acidity and $CO_2$ content of GS were the highest during storage period. The $CO_2$ content of GS was the highest significantly and the $CO_2$ content of C(Control) was the lowest significantly. When the hardness was measured, G was the hardest and there were no significant difference between C and GS. Total cells and lactic acid bacteria were increased rapidly at initial fermentation and GS was the highest of 3 samples from 6th storage day. The result of sensory evaluation showed that G was lower in sourness and higher in hardness than C and GS. Ginseng flavor had no significant differences between G and GS. And G was higher than GS in bitter taste. Consumer Acceptance test showed that consumer prefered C and GS to G. Considering all results, it can be concluded that addition of Schizandra chinensis juice to kimchi decreases the bitter taste of ginseng and increasing consumer preference.

The purpose of this study was to get insights and data from home economics teachers for the development of an in-service educational program on practical problem focused home economics program, which was planned to be held from January 21st and to 29th, 2008. For this, focus group interview, one of qualitative research methods, was used. One session of pilot and three sessions of main focus group interview in which total of 18 from October 31st, 2007 to November 14, 2007. Home economics teachers that participated were carried out. Participants requested the followings contents of an in-service educational program regarding the practical problem focused home economics curriculum. First, most of participants strongly desired to participate in an in-service educational program when a program provided. The participants wanted to be a professional, who is able to explain logically with philosophical background and knowledge about the practical problem focused home economics curriculum. Second, participants requested the followings regarding practical problem focused home economics curriculum for the contents of an in-service educational program: philosophy of home economics, setting a perspective on each content areas, development of practical problem, watching a sample class unit, developing teaching materials and motivation stimulating questions, designing of instruction and lesson plans, class presentation and peer evaluation, constructing paper and pencil test items, and feedback from expects on the practical problem focused home economics curriculum. Third, participants wanted an in-service educational program to be a combination of theory and practice, and at least 50% of it allotted to practice. Participants thought that both peer participants and experts from university would evaluate them whether they achieved the objectives of the in-service educational program if an in-service program has to evaluate participants. Participants would evaluate an in-service educational program excellent when they become empowered to teach other home economics teachers the theoretical aspects of the practical problem focused home economics curriculum and the practical aspects as well. Based on the results of this study a framework of the 30 hours practical problem focused home economics curriculum was proposed.

In short, the result of this study are as follows: In this study, first of all, the students could explain significant concepts, knowledge, and principles for the planning of family life; they could interpret and apply them; they have perspectives on them; they could empathize them; and they could have self-knowledge. The students could also accomplish high achievements for important concepts related to the field of family life planning. In conclusion, this study showed that the developed instruction was very effective for the students to achieve fruitful results, accelerating the learners' persistent understanding. Second, the learners had high satisfaction on the instruction of Family Life Planning based on backward design with the average score of 3.68 out of the perfect score 4. The students could be satisfied with the developed instruction since they could have high interest in the class thanks to diverse learning materials, and they could take an active part in the learning tasks based on group activities and questions. Also they could apply the contents that they learned through task performances to new situation and context. Therefore, this study proved that the developed instruction enhanced the learners' satisfaction on class.
This study was conducted to test the Cd accumulation and Cd-tolerance of Pisotithus tinctorius(Pt). Pt was isolated from Pinus thunbergii forest in Muan, Chonnam Province in 1997. Pt was cultured on MMN medium supplemented with $CdSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ at the final concentration of 0, 0.2, 0.5, 2, and $10{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ for 40 days. Growth rate and tolerance index of the fungus were measured every week, while Cd concentration, superoxide dismutase(SOD), and glutathione reductase(GR) of the fungus were analyzed at the end of the culturing, Pt showed growth reduction in vitro at $2{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Cd in the medium and almost stopped growth at $10{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Cd. Tolerance index of Pt decreased with increasing Cd concentration. Cd concentration of Pt was the highest at $10{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Cd. Activities of SOD did not show significant difference between Cd concentrations, but GR of Pt increased at $0.5{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Cd, and decreased at $2{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Cd. Consequently Pt could be called Cd accumulator with a tolerance mechanism to Cd. Their tolerance to Cd were expressed through the higher production of antioxidants such as GR. Pt may be used for revegetation and decontamination of soil polluted by heavy metals.

Purpose: Pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergy in pollinosis patients caused by raw fruits and vegetables and is the most common food allergy in adults. However, there has been no nationwide study on PFAS in Korea. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of PFAS in Korea. Methods: Twenty-two investigators participated in this study, in which patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and/or bronchial asthma with pollen allergy were enrolled. The questionnaires included demographic characteristics, a list of fruits and vegetables, and clinical manifestations of food allergy. Pollen allergy was diagnosed by skin prick test and/or measurement of the serum level of specific IgE. Results: A total of 648 pollinosis patients were enrolled. The prevalence of PFAS was 41.7% (n = 270). PFAS patients exhibited cutaneous (43.0%), respiratory (20.0%), cardiovascular (3.7%) or neurologic symptoms (4.8%) in addition to oropharyngeal symptoms. Anaphylaxis was noted in 8.9% of the PFAS patients. Seventy types of foods were linked to PFAS; e.g., peach (48.5%), apple (46.7%), kiwi (30.4%), peanut (17.4%), plum (16.3%), chestnut (14.8%), pineapple (13.7%), walnut (14.1%), Korean melon (12.6%), tomato (11.9%), melon (11.5%) and apricot (10.7%). Korean foods such as taro/taro stem (8.9%), ginseong (8.2%), perilla leaf (4.4%), bellflower root (4.4%), crown daisy (3.0%), deodeok (3.3%), kudzu root (3.0%) and lotus root (2.6%) were also linked to PFAS. Conclusions: This was the first nationwide study of PFAS in Korea. The prevalence of PFAS was 41.7%, and 8.9% of the PFAS patients had anaphylaxis. These results will provide clinically useful information to physicians.
The construction procedures and artificial turf maintenance program on golf course definitely influence on the distortion of its environment. Soil microbial communities in soil profile were affected directly by those practises on turf areas. In Jeju island, the environmental impact assessment has been required to apply the first quality class granular activated carbon(GAC), which has a high absorbent character to agricultural chemicals, on the soil profiles of golf green system to reduce the pesticide leaching to ground water. This research was carried out to analyze the changes of microbial communities and chemical properties on soil profiles where GAC had been applied at the construction stage at two golf courses in Jeju. The changes of soil microbial population and chemical properties associated with construction methods of soil profile and agrochemical management program were analyzed by monthly at the surface and sub-soil profiles during April through October, 2007. The total numbers of bacteria and fungi, soil moisture content, soil physio-chemical properties were measured on greens and fairways of the both golf courses with different GAC treatment on the green and fairway soil profiles. The results showed that GAC had positive effects on the water holding capacity, pH and EC, however, it did not improved the holding capacity of available nutrients ${NO_3}^-,{NH_4}^+$, and phosphorus by its sorption phenomenon. In microbial count test, the total numbers of bacteria and fungi showed a great variation during sampling dates. That may directly relate to the agrochemical application, however, the ratio of total bacterial number versus total fungus number showed a constant value on a sub-soil of 15~30cm depth. Thus, the construction method of GAC in soil profile, and application of fertilizer and pesticide, both impacted on the changes of microbial population. It's means that the construction method of soil profile and turf management using agro-materials might greatly affect on the turfgrass culture and the environment of golf course.

Nowadays there are many sun protection cosmetics including organic or inorganic UV filter as an active ingredient. Chemically stable inorganic sunsEreen agents, usually metal oxides, we widely employed in high SPF products. Titanium dioxide is one of the most frequently used inorganic UV filters. It has been used as pigments for a long period of cosmetic history. With the development of micronization techniques, it becomes possible to incorporate titanium dioxide in sunscreen formulations without whitening effect and it becomes an important research topic. However, there are very few works related to quantitations of titanium dioxide in sunscreen products. In this research, we analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide in sunscreen cosmetics by adapting redof titration, reduction of Ti(IV) to Ti(III) and reoxidation to Ti(IV). After calcification of other organic ingredients of cosmetics, titanium dioxide is dissolved by hot sulfuric acid. The dissolved Ti(IV) is reduced to the Ti(III) by adding aluminum metals. The reduced Ti(III) is titrated against a standard oxidizing agent, Fe(III) (ammonium iron(III) sulfate), with potassium thiocyanate as an indicator In order to test accuracy and applicability of the proposed method, we analyzed the amounts of titanium dioxide in four types of sunscreen cosmetics, such as cream, make-up base, foundation and powder, after adding known amounts of titanium dioxide $(1{\sim}25w/w%)$. The percent recoveries of the titanium dioxide in four types of formulations were in the range between 96 and 105%. We also analyzed 7 commercial cosmetic products labeled titanium dioxide as an ingredient and compared the results with those of obtained from ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry), one of the most powerful atomic analysis techniques. The results showed that the titrated amounts were well coincided with the analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide by ICP-AES. Although instrumental analytical methods, ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry) and ICP-AES, are the best for the analysis of titanium, it is hard to adopt because of their high prices for small cosmetic companies. It was found that the volumetric method presented here gat e quantitative and reliable results with routine lab-wares and chemicals.
Race and ethnicity are important factors which influence the elderIy's residential adjustment behaviors, although it is unclear whether this reflects influences unrelated to race and ethnlcity. Culturally, the norm of family supportoften obseved among various minority ethnic groups is likely to provide flexible family suppof for the elderIy. Economically, the life-long hardship ofminority groups is likely to force them to maintain extended family living arrangements simply to reduce expenses via economies of scale. Thecontroversy about the economic need versus the cultural prescription forextended living arrangements remains unresoIved because it fails to articulatethe meaning of family supports among many disadvantaged groups. This study aims to test previous economic and cultural arguments, byexamining ethnic differences iu the eiderIy's responsiveness to their health andeconomic problems. Two hypotheses about cultural influences on the elderly's resideutiai adjustment are examined. First, do elderly minorities receive famiiysupporis for longer periods when they are poor if economic and health status\ulcorner Second, do elderiy minorities receive family supports more often when their health status declines\ulcorner Using the Longitudinal Suvey on Aging from 1984 to 1990. this study employs Markovian multi-state life tables, and discrete and contonuous competing hazard analyses for the transition in living arrangements. The main results provide substantial evidence against the cultural resource thesis. Elderly minorities experience more frequent transition between living alone and living with relatives than white elderly persons when group differences in the extent of mortality and insititutionalization are controlled. The shorter timf of living alone among elderly monorities stems from their greater likehood of joining relatives as well as greater mortality and attrition rates than elderly whites. Coresidence of elderly whites with their relatives is more likely to occur in response to their needs for health care than of elderly whites. it implies that instability. not flezibility. characterrizes elderly minorities living arrangements.

This study was carried out to investigate the optimum cultivation distance for high yielding cultivation of the new variety of Gomchwi in highland and lowland. The test material was used 'Sammany' variety and the area was cultivated with a highland of 750 m above sea level and a lowland of 20 m above sea level. The planting distance was 5 treatments of $20{\times}20cm$, $20{\times}30cm$, $30{\times}30cm$, $35{\times}40cm$ and $40{\times}40cm$, and the plant was cultivated at 35% shading net in the open field. The annual growth of 'Sammany' variety was higher in the highland than in the lowland, but the number of leaves was higher in the lowland than that in the highland. The leaf number per plant was the highest in the $40{\times}40cm$ plot and the more the planting distance was, the more tendency was. However, the leaf weight per plant was higher in the highland than in the lowland. The number of leaves per 10a were higher in the lowland than that of highland and the tendency was more as the planting distance was narrower. Yields were slightly higher in the highland than that of lowland and the highest treatment plot was 2,983 kg/10a in $20{\times}20cm$. In the second year, the growth was high in the highland, and the highland was high in the leaf number and leaf weight and the same tendency in the yields. Among the planting distances, Yields in both areas were the highest in the $20{\times}20cm$ treatment, with 3,369 kg/10a in lowland and 7,257 kg/10a in highland. The growth of the third year was slightly better in the highland than that of the lowland but the difference was not significant. However, the number of leaves and leaf weight per plant were higher in the lowland than that of highland. And, in terms of leaf number and yield per 10a, it was also higher in the lowland than that in the highland. The narrower the planting distance was increased yields, and the highest yield was 6,051 kg/10a in $20{\times}20cm$. The lowland was high in yield until the third year, but the highland was the highest in the second year and decreased slightly in the third year. The narrower the planting distance in the both areas, the higher the yield, and the leaf size tended to be small.
To investigate the effect of pyroligneous acid liquor (PAL) on the maturity of pig manure compost, PAL was treated to the compost piles. The treatments included applications of 100 and 300 times diluted PAL in addition to the control. The compost piles were stirred in three times at the 1st, 10th, and 25th day of composting. Temperature in the compost pile of control treatment increased from 28 to $60^{\circ}C$ within 10 days and remained nearly at the level until 30th day, then it began to decrease. On the other hand, temperature of the PAL-100 and PAL-300 treatments reached 65 to $70^{\circ}C$ within 8 days and became stabilized until 30th day, then the temperature decreased to about $28^{\circ}C$. However, the temperature of control was stabilized approximately at the 40th day. Initially, the pH of control treatment dropped from 8.2 to slightly above pH 8.0 during 4th day, but that of the PAL-100 treatment declined to 7.8. Among treatments, pH value of PAL-100 treatment was the lowest, which was about 7.3 after becoming stabilization. Also the germination index (GI) was increased at all treatments. The C/N ratio range of PAL-100 treatment was better balanced than others and was at 24.3. Moreover the round paper chromatogram of extracted solution of compost of PAL-100 treatment was the sharpest and clearest among treatments. The GI values of control, PAL-100, and PAL-300 in 60 days of composting were about 108, 120, and 118 in germination test using chinese cabbage, respectively. It can be concluded that the addition of diluted PAL solution is effective in composting of pig manure.
