Zr alloy specimens were coated with Cr-Al alloy to enhance their resistance to oxidation. The coated samples were oxidized at 1200 ℃ in a steam environment for 300 s and showed extremely low oxidation when compared to uncoated Zr alloy specimens. The microstructure and elemental distribution of the oxides formed on the surface of Cr-Al alloys have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A very thin protective layer of Cr2O3 formed on the outer surface of the Cr-Al alloy, and a thin Al2O3 layer was also observed in the Cr-Al alloy matrix, near the surface. Our results suggest that these two oxide layers near the surface confers excellent oxidation resistance to the Cr-Al alloy. Even after exposure to a high temperature of 1200 ℃, inter-diffusion between the Cr-Al alloy and the Zr alloy occurred in very few regions near the interface. Analysis of the inter-diffusion layer by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) measurement confirmed its identity as Cr2Zr.

A simple solid state incorporation method was employed in order to incorporate Pd nanocatalyst into a Nafion film for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) via the reduction of palladium (II) bis (acetylacetonate), $Pd(acac)_2$. It was sublimed, penetrated into Nafion film and then reduced to Pd nanoparticles simultaneously in a glass reactor of N2 atmosphere at $180^{\circ}C$ for 1, 3 and 5 min. This reaction was took place without any reducing agent and any solvent. The morphology of the Pd nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Pd distribution was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). And 23% modification of tensile strength of Pd/Nafion composite film was measured by universal testing machine and I-V curve was estimated by using a unit cell with $5{\times}5cm^2$ active area.

In this research, the Ir supported $TiO_2$ (P25) catalyst was prepared by precipitation method for oxygen evolution reaction. The $Ir/TiO_2$ catalyst was synthesised by reduction reaction using reducing agent. Physiochemical characterizations of synthesized $Ir/TiO_2$ catalyst was studied by means of SEM, EDS mapping, TEM and XRD. The Electrochemical characterizations were tested by using the technique of CV and LSV by RDE and Potentiostat. Physicochemical properties were characterized with XRD where Iridium metal morphology and Ir(111) and Ir(222) peaks were founded. $Ir0.2Ru0.8O_2$ exhibited higher OER activity than $Ir0.5Ru0.5O_2$ followed by $Ir/TiO_2$ and $IrO_2$.
Synthesis of carbon nanomaterials on a metal substrate by an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was illustrated. Two stainless steel plates coated with $Ni(NO_3){_2}$ were folded with each other and used as a catalytic metal substrate. Carbon nanotubes and nanofibers with diameters of 20 - 60nm were found on the substrate. From the TEM-EDS analyses, most of the nanomaterials turned out to be Nicatalyzed. Carbon nanotubes were formed on the substrate in the region ranging from about 1,400K to 900K. The formation mechanisms of nanotubes and nanofibers were similar. The synthesis temperature of the nanofibers was lower than that of the nanotubes. The higher synthesis temperature of nanotubes might enhance the activity of the catalyst metal and produce more condensed carbons. The accumulated graphite layers led to form compartments to release the compressive stress in the layers. The growth of carbon nanotubes was bamboo-shaped showing compartments in the inside hollow. The distances between those compartments represented the growth rate that depended on the synthesis temperature.

Strong metal-support interaction effect is an important issue in determining the catalytic activity for heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, we report the catalytic activity of $Au/TiO_2$, $Au/Al_2O_3$, and $Au/Al_2O_3-CeO_2$ nanocatalysts under CO oxidation fabricated by arc plasma deposition (APD), which is a facile dry process with no organic materials involved. These catalytic materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and $N_2$-physisorption. Catalytic activity of the materials has measured by CO oxidation using oxygen, as a model reaction, in a micro-flow reactor at atmospheric pressure. Using APD, the catalyst nanoparticles were well dispersed on metal oxide powder with an average particle size (3~10 nm). As for catalytic reactivity, the result shows $Au/Al_2O_3-CeO_2$ nanocatalyst has the highest catalytic activity among three samples in CO oxidation, and $Au/TiO_2$, and $Au/Al_2O_3$ in sequence. We discuss the effects of structure and metal-oxide interactions of the catalysts on catalytic activity.

Rock wool, a kind of asbestos substitutes, was analyzed for its physicochemical properties. After fivers of rock wool were instilled into rat lungs, These pathological changes were evaluated. In addition, the fibers in the lungs were counted and characterized after the lungs were treated for electron microscopical analysis. The lungs of rats showed pathological lesions such as granulomatous changes, but these lesions disappeared at 28 days groups after instilled rats. The rock wool fibers in the lungs decreased more 50 % after 28 days instilled into rat lungs. And rock wool showed early change in fiber compositions after 3 days compare with chrysotile showed after 7 days instilled into rat lungs. This study showed that the durability of rock wool in the lungs is more milder than chrysotile.

This work reports the electrical characteristics of and temperature distribution in chalcogenide phase change memory (PCM) devices that have a self-aligned structure. GST (Ge-Sb-Te) chalcogenide alloy films were formed in a self-aligned manner by interdiffusion between sputter-deposited Ge and $Sb_2Te_3$ films during thermal annealing. A transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) analysis demonstrated that the local composition of the GST alloy differed significantly and that a $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ intermediate layer was formed near the $Ge/Sb_2Te_3$ interface. The programming current and threshold switching voltage of the PCM device were much smaller than those of a control device; this implies that a phase transition occurred only in the $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ intermediate layer and not in the entire thickness of the GST alloy. It was confirmed by computer simulation, that the localized phase transition and heat loss suppression of the GST alloy promoted a temperature rise in the PCM device.

This paper reports the microstructure and electrochemical properties of Si-Al-Fe ternary amorphous alloys prepared by rapid solidification as an anode for lithium secondary batteries. The microstructure was analyzed using XRD and HR-TEM with EDS mapping. In accordance with DSC analysis, annealing was performed to crystallize the active nano-Si in the amorphous alloy. Thus, nano-Si forms (~80 nm) embedded in the matrix alloy, such as $Fe_2Al_3Si_3$, $FeSi_2$, and $Fe_{0.42}Si_{2.67}$, were successfully synthesized. The electrode based on the Si-Al-Fe ternary alloy delivered an initial discharge capacity of approximately $700mAh^{g-1}$, and exhibited a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.0~99.6% from the $2^{nd}$ to $70^{th}$ cycles.
We report the precipitation of ZnO nanocrystals, Ag-clusters, and Ag nanoparticles in Ag/Er/Yb doped borate glasses by furnace annealing and $CO_2$ laser annealing. The XRD analysis revealed the precipitation of ZnO and Ag phases. The absorption spectra, the TEM and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) revealed the incorporation of Er and Yb ions into ZnO nanocrystals formed by a laser technique and showed the surface plasmon band of Ag nanoparticles. The down-converted blue emission intensity of $Er^{3+}$ ions obtained under 365 nm excitation was enhanced by more than a hundred times in the glass treated by furnace annealing, mainly due to the energy transfer from Ag-clusters. Moreover, we discussed the contribution of Ag nanoparticles and defects to emission characteristics in the glasses treated by two annealing techniques. Up-conversion emissions of the $Er^{3+}$ ions under 980 nm excitation were enhanced due to the incorporation of $Er^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ions into ZnO nanocrystals after thermal treatments.

This study investigated the feasibility of synthesizing GNPs using synchrotron radiation X-ray for use as a radiosensitizer in radiotherapy, and examined the morphology of the GNPs. Different concentration ratios of 4-mM gold precursor aqueous solution and 4-mM $NaHCO_3$ were mixed. This gold precursor aqueous solution was continuously irradiated with synchrotron radiation in the 4B X-ray microdiffraction beamline of Pohang Light Source (PLS)-II in Korea. The SEM, EDS, TEM, and XRD spectra of the GNPs synthesized using the synchrotron radiation were investigated. The GNPs synthesized using the synchrotron radiation were nanocrystals predominantly in the (111) direction of the face-centered cubic structure. We found that the shape of the gold nanoparticles was icosahedron at the molar concentrations of 0.25 mM:0.25 mM and 0.5 mM:0.5 mM mixed with 4 mM $HAuCl_4{\cdot}3H_2O$ and 4 mM $NaHCO_3$ solutions.
