  • The high voltage electron microscope (HVEM) newly installed in KBSI is an advanced transmission electron microscope capable of atomic resolution (${\leq}1.2{\AA}$ point-to-point resolution) together with high titling function (${\pm}60^{\circ}$), which are suitable to do 3-dimensional atomic imaging of a specimen. In addition, the instrument can be controlled by remote operation system, named as 'FasTEM' for the HVEM, which is favorable to overcome some environmental obstacles resulting from the direct operation. The FasTEM remote operation system has been established between the headquarter of KBSI in Daejeon and the Seoul branch. The server system in the headquarter has been connected with a portable client console system in the Seoul branch using an advanced internet resource, 'KOREN' of 155 Mbps grade. Most of the HVEM functions essential to do remote operation are available on the portable client console. The experiment to acquire the high resolution image of [001] Au has been achieved by excellent transmission of control signals and communication with the HVEM. Real-time reaction like direct operation, such as controls of the illumination and projection parameters, acquisition and adjustment of each detector signal, and electrical steering of each motor-driven system has been realized in remote site. It is positively anticipated that the first remote operation of HVEM in conjunction with IT infraengineering plays a important role in constructing the network based e-Science Grid in Korea for national user s facilities.

  • We produced $(Co_{93}Cr_{7})-P-Ni$ thin films for longitudinal magnetic recording media using OC magnetron sputtering system The variation of magnetic properties of $(Co_{93}Cr_{7})-P-Ni$ pseudo-ternary system with the composition was examined. We obtained the coercivity up to 1500 Oe. The coercivity iocrease could be ascribed to in-plane anisotropy enhaocement, grain size decrease, magnetic decoupling between particles. TEM micrographs showed that the grains were well-decoupled by the addition of phosphorous.

  • The variation of microorganisms (activated slude, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aureobasidium pullulans) caused by the biosorption of $Pb^{2+}$ was observed by TEM and microscope. By the TEM observation of S. cerevisiae, the plasmolysis and lysis of cell wall or cell membrane were occurred by the penetration of $Pb^{2+}$ into the inner cellular region. However, in the case of A. pullulans, the plasmolysis and lysis of cell wall or cell membrane were not occurred because of the prevention of $Pb^{2+}$ penetration by the extracelluar polymeric substances (EPS). A flocculation of microorganisms, in the case of A. pullulans, was observed by the $Pb^{2+}$ accumulation after 3~4 h and the color was changed from white to black after 1 day. The flocculation of activated sludge was improved by the accumulation $Pb^{2+}$ after 1 h, however, the floc was broken up and the settling efficiency decreased after 1 day.

  • Objectives: 21 sepiolite substances produced in China were investigated for the presence of asbestos in their materials. Materials and methods: In order to identify asbestos in sepiolite substances, test materials were analyzed using a transmission electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (TEM-EDS) for confirming their shape and components (atomic %). Results: Five of 21 sepiolte substances were asbestos-containing materials. Two chrysotile containing sepiolite proved to be asbestoscontaining materials, as did two chrysotile mixed with tremolite containing sepiolite. 16 sepiolite substances did not contain asbestos materials. Conclusions: When importing sepiolite substances, they must be analyzed to determine if there is asbestos in their materials.

  • Hematite iron oxide (${\alpha}$-$Fe_2O_3$) nanowalls were fabricated on aluminum substrate by a facile solvent-assisted hydrothermal oxidation process. The XRD and EDS patterns indicate that the sample has a rhombohedral phase of hematite $Fe_2O_3$. FE-SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, SA-ED were employed to characterize the resulting materials. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms was used to study a BET surface area. Their capability of catalytic degradation of titan yellow GR azo dye with air oxygen in aqueous solution over $Fe_2O_3$ catalysts was studied. The result indicates that the as-prepared product has a high catalytic activity, because it has a larger surface area. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms of adsorption dye on the catalysts surface were investigated and the decomposition of titan yellow GR follows pseudo-first order kinetic.

  • We have synthesized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using chicken feathers (poultry waste) and Bacillus subtilis RSE163. Disulfide reductase and keratinase produced by Bacillus subtilis during the degradation of chicken feather has been used to reduce Au3+ from HAuCl4 precursor to produce gold nanoparticles. The synthesized biogenic GNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and zeta potential measurements. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the presence of protein capping on synthesized GNPs, imparting multifunctionality to the GNP surface. Furthermore, the nontoxic nature of biogenic GNPs was insured by interaction with Escherichia coli (ATCC11103), where TEM images and enhancement of growth rate of E. coli in log phase signified their nontoxic nature. The results indicate that the synthesis of biocompatible GNPs using poultry waste may find potential applications in drug delivery and sensing.

  • Nanosized hollow silica was prepared by $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ method in the presence of aluminum isopropoxide. The mixture of polyelectrolytes such as poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate)(PSS) and polyacrylic acid(PAA) were used as templates. Tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS) and aluminum isopropoxide were used as precursors for silica and alumina, respectively. The function of aluminum isopropoxide is to increase the porosity of silica shell. The characterizations of hollow silica were examined by TEM(transmission electron microscopy), TGA(thermogravimetric analysis), BET(Brunauer Emmett Teller), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), and FT-IR spectrum. It was found that the shell thickness of hollow silica was around 8 nm and the core diameter was around 20 nm by TEM.

  • This paper reports a change of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) properties by post-treatment process after growth of CNTs. CNTs were treated by thermal method and solution method, and then investigated in detail using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), high resolution transmission scanning electron microscopy(HR-TEM), RAMAN spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR). FT-IR spectra showed that the amount of hydroxyl generated on surface of CNTs were changed with post-treatment condition. FE-SEM and TEM images were shown CNTs diameter and density variations were dependent with their treatment conditions. RAMAN spectroscopy was shown that carbon nanotubes structure vary with treatment conditions.
