Crystallographic Relationships of (Ba, Sr) $TiO_3$Thin Film Prepared by Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition on (111) Textured Pt Electrode

  • The crystallographic orientations of $Ba_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Ti $O_3$(BST) thin film deposited by a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on (111) textured Pt electrode were studied with a transmission electron microscopy. The fully crystallized BST thin film (50nm) has (100) and (110) preferred orientations. A high resolution transmission electron microscopy study has revealed the crystallographic orientation relationships between BST thin film and Pt electrode. These relationships explained the preferred orientation of BST film on (111) textured Pt electrode. With these results, we could represent the atomic arrangement at the BST/Pt interface.e.e.

TEM/AES Analysis of AlGaAs/gaAs Quantum Well Structures Grown by LP-MOCVD (저압MOCVD법에 의하여 성장한 AlGaAs/GaAs. 양자우물구조의 TEM/AES분석)

  • Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and anger electron microscopy(AES) studies of GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs(x=0.58) quantum wells grown by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(LP-MOCVD) are carried out. Isolated quantum well structure having the well width as small as 15 \ulcornerand multiquantum well structure, which consisted of 51 alternating layers with each thickness of 10\ulcorner were suscessfully grown. TEM analyses have shown that their interfaces were almost completely coherent without any structural disorder, alloy clustering and crystal defect. AES depth resolution have shown the compositional periodicity of superlattice structure.

Comparative study on the specimen thickness measurement using EELS and CBED methods

  • Two thickness measurement methods using an electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and 10a convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) were compared in an Fe-18Mn-0.7C alloy. The thin foil specimen was firstly tilted to satisfy 10a two-beam condition. Low loss spectra of EELS and CBED patterns were acquired in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and TEM-CBED modes under the two-beam condition. The log-ratio method was used for measuring the thin foil thickness. Kossel-Möllenstedt (K-M) fringe of the $13{\ba{1}}$ diffracted disk of austenite was analyzed to evaluate the thickness. The results prove the good coherency between both methods in the thickness range of 72 ~ 113 nm with a difference of less than 5%.

Current Status of Liquid-cell Transmission Electron Microscopy (액상 투과전자현미경 분석기법 소개 및 최신 연구동향)

  • Even though, nanoscale materials of various shapes and compositions have been synthesized in the liquid, their underlying growth and transformation mechanisms are not well understood due to a lack of analytical methods. The advent of liquid cell for transmission electron microscope (TEM) enables the direct imaging of chemical reactions that occur in liquids with nanometer resolution of the electron microscope (EM). Here, the technical development of liquid cell TEM equipment and their applications to the study of nanomaterials analysis in liquid are discussed. Also new findings discovered through liquid cell TEM studies such as nucleation & growth, coalescence process and transformation are discussed.

Structural Characterization of CoCrFeMnNi High Entropy Alloy Oxynitride Thin Film Grown by Sputtering (스퍼터링 방법으로 성장한 코발트크롬철망간니켈 고엔트로피 질산화물 박막의 구조특성)

  • This study investigates the microstructural properties of CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) oxynitride thin film. The HEA oxynitride thin film is grown by the magnetron sputtering method using nitrogen and oxygen gases. The grown CoCrFeMnNi HEA film shows a microstructure with nanocrystalline regions of 5~20 nm in the amorphous region, which is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). From the TEM electron diffraction pattern analysis crystal structure is determined to be a face centered cubic (FCC) structure with a lattice constant of 0.491 nm, which is larger than that of CoCrFeMnNi HEA. The HEA oxynitride film shows a single phase in which constituting elements are distributed homogeneously as confirmed by element mapping using a Cs-corrected scanning TEM (STEM). Mechanical properties of the CoCrFeMnNi HEA oxynitride thin film are addressed by a nano indentation method, and a hardness of 8.13 GPa and a Young's modulus of 157.3 GPa are obtained. The observed high hardness value is thought to be the result of hardening due to the nanocrystalline microstructure.

  • Whiskers of SiC were grown from the mixture of silica and graphite powders by Acheson method(direct heating method). The structrua, morphological and chemical characterizations have been performed by X-ray diffractometer(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS). The growth mechanism of SiC whiskers is also discussed.

Deformation Behavior in Compatible Polymer Blends (고분자블렌드에서의 변형거동)

  • Deformation behavior of compatible polymer blends was studied using scanning electron, optical, and transmission electron microscopies. Four different compatible systems were employed and charaterized in this investigation : polystyrene(PS) and polyphenylene oxide(PPO), polystyrene(PS) and polyvinlmethylether(PVME), polystyrene(PS) and poly $\alpha$-methylstyrene(P$\alpha$MS). Individual craze and shear deformation zone microstructures were examined by transmission microscopy (TEM). For TEM observations, specimens deformed in-situ on a TEM grid were utilized. Quantiative analysis of these crazes and shear deformation zones was obtained from the nicrodensitometry of the TEM negatives in the manner developed by Lauterwasser and Kramer. Microdensitometry resulys showed that the fibril extension ratio decreased as the PPO content increased in the PS/PPO blends, and finally, for 100% PPO, only shear deformation zones were observed. For the PS/PVME blends, the ribril extension ratio also decreased as the VME content increased. For the PS/P$\alpha$MS blends, the fibril extension ratio increased as the P$\alpha$MS content increased, For the PPO/P$\alpha$MS blends, the fibril extension ratio increased as the P$\alpha$MS content increased.

Cell Wall Structure of Various Tropical Plant Waste Fibers

  • A comparative study of the structure and organization of the primary and secondary walls in different types of tropical plant waste fibers was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thickness of each layer was also measured using Image Analyzer. TEM micrographs haveconfirmed that cell wall structure of all six types of tropical plant waste fibers (empty fruit bunch, oil palm frond, oil palm trunk, coir, banana stem and pineapple leaf) has the same ultrastructure with wood fibre. The fibers consisted of middle lamella, primary and thick secondary wall with different thickness for different types of fibers. The secondary wall was differentiated into a $S_1$ layer, a unique multi-lamellae $S_2$ layer, and $S_3$ layer.

  • In this study, the characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from diesel and biodiesel fuel combustion was experimentally investigated. The experiment was performed in a single cylinder common-rail compression ignition engine. The fuels were injected at -5 CAD (Crank angle degree) ATDC (After top dead center) with 80 MPa injection pressure. Size distribution of PM was measured by scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and morphology of PM was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). PM from biodiesel shows lower emission level and smaller primary particles.

TDEAT single source를 사용한 TiN막의 특성평가

  • TiN 박막은 저온(<$500^{\circ}C$), 저압(1Torr)에서 Tetrakis(diethylamido)titanium[TDEAT, Ti(NEt2)4]single precursor를 사용하여 증착하였다. 증차고딘 박막은 SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy)으로 surface morphology와 step coverage를 측정하였고, TEM(Transmission Electron Microscopy)분석결과 microcrystalline의 TiN을 확인하였다. XPS(X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy)분석결과에 따르면 $200-500^{\circ}C$구간에서는 $\beta$-hydogen elimination에 의한 반응이 일어나고 $600-700^{\circ}C$구간에서는 thermal decomposition에 의한 반응이 일어나고 있음을 알 수 있다. Carbon과 oxygen의 농도는 AES(Auger Electron Spectroscopy)를 사용하여 측정하였으며 온도가 감소할수록 carbon의 농도가 감소하는 경향을 보여주고 있다.
