Relationship Between the Number of Livestock and the Area of Forage Crop of Saemangeum Crop-livestock Complex (새만금 경축순환농업단지의 적정 가축 사육두수와 조사료 재배면적의 관계 분석)

  • The suitable area of forage crop field was calculated under the assumption that all of the liquied manure would be used to nutrient of crops at the Saemangeum crop-livestock complex. At first, Korean cattle and dairy cattle were selected and swine was excluded becausr of high pollution availability. When forage crop was calculated from nutrient amounts of manure of livestocks and standard applicable fertilizer quantity to the selected forage crops, 232ha (278ha including infrastructure part) was determined to be appropriate in case of 2500 heads of Korean cattle and 300 heads of dairy cattle were raised. From the result by that calculated ares (232ha) to forage crop feeding could be possible to the Korean cattle and dairy cattle feeding using TDN index, more than 217ha of forage crop fields would be satisfied nutritionally.

Varietal Variation in Biomass Production and Total Digestible Nutrients of Maize Grown under Lowland Condition

  • This study was carried out to select the excellent silage maize varieties customized for paddy cultivation that is vulnerable to lodging and waterlogging in the central and region. Ten varieties (Kwangpyeongok, P3394, etc.) were sown with 3 replicates in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do. It was sown twice in April and June of each year in 2020-2021 and harvested during the yellow ripe stage suitable for silage. The number of days to flowering stage in lowland condition increased up to 11 days compared to that in upland condition. In April seedling, varieties that showed a relatively small decrease in biomass production and total digestible nutrients (TDN) under lowland condition compared to upland condition were Gangdaok and Kwangpyeongok in 2020, and Dacheongok, Gangdaok and Kwangpyeongok in 2021. Kwangpyeongok, Gangdaok, and Sinhwangok showed relatively higher biomass production and TDN than the other varieties under lowland compared to upland in both 2020 and 2021. Our results suggest that Kwangpyeongok and Gangdaok are suitable silage maize varieties for lowland cultivation in the central region of Korea.

Effect of Extension of Grazing Duration in Late Autumn on Grass Growth in Following Spring (만추 방목기간의 연장이 이듬해 봄 목초의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of extension of grazing duration in late autumn on grass growth in following spring, in order to improve the rate of self-sufficiency for roughage feed. Plant height, total biomass and litter production of herbage were increased when the grazing was finished early in late autumn. The proportions of clover and litter, and amounts of animal intake were decreased, with extended grazing duration in late autumn. But when the grazing was finished late in autumn, the contents of crude protein (CP, %) of herbage were increased, contents of acid detergent fiber (ADF, %), neutral detergent fiber (NDF, %) and crude ash (%) were decreased in pasture after grazing, therefore the contents of total digestible nutrients (TDN, %) and relative feed value (RFV) of herbage were improved. The early end grazing showed that plant height, total biomass and litter production of herbage in following spring were higher than those in late end grazing. However, increased yields were not significantly different among end grazing treatments (0.12-0.15 tonha), except for the final end grazing in late autumn (0.01 tonha). With extended grazing duration in late autumn, the contents of CP of herbage in following spring were increased, contents of ADF, were decreased, and RFV were improved. Effects of Seeding Rates on Growth, Forage Yield and Feed Value of Cassia mimosoides var. nomame (파종량 차이에 따른 차풀의 생육, 사초수량 및 사료가치 변화)

  • Cassia mimosoides var. nomame was grown at five seeding rates (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg/ha) from March 31 to September 21, 1998 at Cheju to determine influence of seeding rate on agronomic characters, and forage yield and quality. Days to flowering increased from 126 to 129 days as seeding rate increased from 10 to 50 kg/ha. The plant height increased from 86 to 99 cm as seeding rate was increased from 10 to 30 kg/hac and then decreased to 93 cm at a rate of 50 kglha. With increasing seeding rate, stem diameter quadratically decreased and the number of branches and green leaves per plant linearly decreased but the number of withering leaves per plant linearly increased. As seeding rate increased &om 10 to 30 kg/ha, fresh forage, dry matter, crude protein, and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield increased 'from 30.7 to 49.1, 7.5 to 12.2, 0.90 to 1.57 and 4.09 to 7.09 MTha, respectively, and then decreased with further increased seeding rates. Crude protein, ether extract, nitrogen free extract, and TDN wntent increased 12.1 to 14.2% 2.2 to 2.9%, 35.1 to 39.2%, 54.8 to 60.3% respectively, but crude fiber wntent decreased 39.8 .to 33.3% and crude ash declined 4.9 to 3.8% as seeding rate increased from 10 to 50 kgiha. The optimum seeding rate to obtain the highest TDN yield was estimated to be 36kglha. (Key words : Cassia mimosoides var. nomame, Seeding rate, Forage yield, Forage quality)

Forage Yield and Quality of Summer Grain Legumes and Forage Grasses in Cheju Island

  • Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.), mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilcz.], cowpea [V. unguiculata (L.) Walp.], adzuki bean [V. angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi], maize [Zea mays L.], sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], sorghum $\times$ sudangrass [So bicolor intraspecific hybrid], and Japanese millet [Echinochloa crusgalli var. frumentacea (Link) W.F. Wight] were grown at two planting dates (18 June and 15 July) at Cheju in 1997 to select the best forage legumes adapted to Cheju Island for grass-legume forage rotation. Averaged across planting dates and cultivars, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yields were 5,646, 1,056, and 3,637 kg/ha for soybean, 4,458, 676, and 2,661 kg/ha for mungbean, 3,289, 553, and 2,055 kg/ha for cowpea, 3,931, 674, and 2,489 kg/ha for adzuki bean, 12,695, 969, and 7,642 kg/ha for maize, 17,071, 1,260, and 8,857 kg/ha for sorghum, 16,355, 1,163, and 8,543 kg/ha for sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid, and 8,288, 929, and 4,091 kg/ha for Japanese millet. Soybean was higher in CP, ether extract (EE), and TON content but was lower in nitrogen free extract content compared with the three other legumes. The legumes had much higher CP (13.7 to 21.9%), EE (2.42 to 6.23%), and TDN (58.7 to 69.9%) content but lower in crude fiber (CF) content (17.3 to 25.3%) than did the grasses tested except maize which had relatively lower CF content but higher TDN content. These results suggest that soybean could be the best forage legume for grass-legume forage rotation in the Cheju region.

Development of mechanized system model for the production of winter cereal wrap silage in the fallow paddy field(2) - Cost analysis of mechanized wrap silge production - (답리작 맥류 랩-사일리지의 기계화 시스템 모델 개발(2) - 기계화 모델을 이용한 랩-사일리지의 생산비 분석 -)

  • In order to solve the shortage of roughage supply for dairy farm in Korea, winter cereal forage production after harvesting of rice in the fallow paddy field is studied. This study consist of two parts. One is the model development of the mechanized production which was already reported at the preview paper. This is the 2nd parts of the study. Also, the mechanized production model for cereal forage production in winter was reported in the previous study. In this paper, coverage area and mechanized wrap silge production cost are analyzed and compared to the other available feeds in Korea. Results of the research are summarized as follows; The coverage area for the winter cereal wrap silage production system in Korea is estimated to be 33.7 ha in case of working with a tractor and a set of implements. If two or three tractors are available, the coverage area is estimated to be 68.0 and 101.3 ha, respectively. The break even point (BEP) of the farming size is analyzed as 10 ha and its production(operating) cost is estimated to be 317 to 443 won/TDN-kg at the BEP point. The cost is lowered to 182 won/TDN-kg at 100ha-working, and is much lower compared with prices of imported feeds of 360∼600 won/TDN-kg. Therefore, winter cereal wrap silage model is judged to be feasible and desirable for a large scale production of forage in winter fallow paddy field.

Rate Effects of Swine Manure Fermented with Sawdust on Productivity and Nutritive Value of Silage Corn

  • This study was carried out to determine a fertilization rate for productivity and nutritive value improvement of silage corn, using two kinds of composts, and to examine the potential possibility of utilization as an organic fertilizer. The experiment was conducted on the field plot at Gongiam, Kwangju, Kyunggi-Do for 3 years, from 1996 to 1998, and arranged in split-plot design with three replications. The main plots were two kinds of composts such as swine manure fermented with sawdust (SMFWS) and swine manure fermented without sawdust (SMF). Subplots were the nitrogen fertilization rates (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400kgN/ha/year). The dry matter (DM) yield increased as the nitrogen fertilization rate increased up to a rate of 300 kg N/ha, but decreased at rate of 400 kg N/ha. Dry matter yield in SMFWS treatment was higher than that of SMF treatment, but there was no significant difference between SMFWS and SMF treatments. Net energy for lactation (NEI) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) in corn increased as the fertilization rate of SMFWS and SMF increased, and crude protein (CP) content increased by the fertilization of SMFWS and SMF. No difference of CP, NEI and TDN was found between SMFWS and SMF treatments.

Comparison of forage yield and growth characteristic of two forage rice cultivars (cv. Mogyang and cv. Mogwoo) in a reclaimed rice field

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the difference between roughage productivity and feed value by using two domestic forage rice cultivars in a mid-west reclaimed rice field in Korea. During the growing period, Na+ content in soil showed no significant difference between the two cultivars; however, the K+ content in the soil was significantly lower than that in which the Mogwo was grown. The tiller number was 45.5 to 58.8, which was higher than that of Mogyeong, and the leaf number was higher than that of Mogyeong. The dry matter yield per 10 a was 1,338 kg for Moggyang and 1,532 kg for Mogwoo. At the harvest time, the crude protein yield per 10 a produced 108 kg of Mogyang and 170 kg of Mogwoo, and the total digestion nutrient (TDN) yield per 10 a also produced about 617 kg of Mogyang and 880 kg of Mogwoo. To sum up the above results, Mogwo, which has many tiller numbers and leaf numbers, has a high dry matter production, a relatively low neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acidic detergent fiber (ADF), and a high crude protein yield and TDN yield, and it was better when cultivating the forage rice cultivars in reclaimed land.

Moisture Concentration Variation of Silages Produced on Commercial Farms in the South-Central USA

  • Preservation of forage crops as silage offers opportunity to avoid the high risk of rain-damaged hay in the humid south-central USA. Recent developments with baled silage or baleage make silage a less expensive option than typical chopped silage. Silage has been important in the region primarily for dairy production, but baleage has become an option for the more extensive beef cattle industry in the region. Silage samples submitted to the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center Forage Quality Lab from 2006 through 2013 were assessed for dry matter (DM) and forage nutritive characteristics of chopped silage and baleage of the different forage types from commercial farms primarily in Louisiana and Mississippi. Of the 1,308 silage samples submitted, 1,065 were annual ryegrass (AR) with small grains (SG), the warm-season annual (WA) grasses, sorghums and pearl millet, and the warm-season perennial (WP) grasses, bermudagrass and bahiagrass, providing the remaining samples. Concentration of DM was used to indicate an effective ensiling opportunity, and AR silage was more frequently within the target DM range than was the WA forage group. The AR samples also indicated a high-quality forage with average crude protein (CP) of 130 g/kg and total digestible nutrient (TDN) near 600 g/kg. The cooler winter weather at harvest apparently complicated harvest of SG silage with chopped SG silage lower in both CP and TDN (104 and 553 g/kg, respectively) than either AR silage or baleage of SG (137 and 624 g/kg for CP and TDN, respectively). The hot, humid summer weather along with large stems and large forage quantities of the WA grasses and the inherently higher fiber concentration of WP grasses at harvest stage indicate that preservation of these forage types as silage will be challenging, although successful commercial silage samples of each forage type and preservation approach were included among samples of silages produced in the region.

Evaluation of Agronomic Characteristics, Forage Production and Quality of Corn Hybrids for Silage at Paddy Field in Southern Region of Korea (남부지방 논에서 사일리지용 옥수수 품종의 생육특성, 생산성 및 품질 비교)

  • This experiment was carried out to know adaptability and forage production and quality of corn hybrid for silage at paddy field from 2007 to 2008 at JullaNamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES). Among agronomic characteristics, 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid was somewhat strong for waterlogging and good stay green, lodging, disease and insect resistance. The fresh yield and total digestible nutrients (TDN) of 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid were the highest among corn hybrids. Dry yield of 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid was increased to 50.5%, 13.6% due to waterlogging tolerance than those 'P3156' and 'P32P75' hybrids, respectively. The result of this study indicated that 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid could be recommended as having good characters according to production, waterlogging tolerance, stay green at paddy field in southern region of Korea.
