  • T-box transcription factor 2 (Tbr2) is a member of the T-box family of transcription factors and it plays an important role in brain development, progenitor cell proliferation, and the modulation of differentiation and function in immune cells, such as CD8+ T cells and natural killer cells. This study aims to elucidate the involvement of Tbr2 in the pathophysiological events following pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus in mice. Status epilepticus resulted in prominent neuronal cell death in discrete brain regions, such as CA3, the hilus, and the piriform cortex. Interestingly, when the immunoreactivity of Tbr2 was examined two days after status epilepticus, it was transiently increased in CA3 and in the piriform cortex. Tbr2-positive cells in CA3 and the piriform cortex were double-labeled with CD11b, a marker of microglia and a subset of white blood cells, such as monocytes, CD8+ T cells, and natural killer cells. Moreover, the double-labeled cells with Tbr2 and CD11b showed amoeboid morphology, and this data indicates that Tbr2-expressing cells may be reactive microglia or infiltrating white blood cells. Furthermore, clustered Tbr2-positive cells were observed in the platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1)-positive blood vessels near the CA3 area, which suggests that Tbr2-positive cells may be infiltrating the white blood cells. Based on this data, this study is the first to indicate the involvement of Tbr2 in neuropathophysiology in status epilepticus.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of books selected for 'The Big Read' community reading initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2006 to 2017 and its relation with 'One Book, One City' community reading campaign in the U.S.A. An analysis of 1,407 TBR programs and 745 participating communities, and 56 books from TBR Library shows that TBR expands and complements 'One Book' reading campaigns, and confirms the sustenance of this innovative model. TBR Libray books were selected with TBR's own criteria, but their features are generally very similar to those of 1,102 books selected for 'One Book' programs. They often reflect some interests in such universal values as coming of age, justice, integrity, etc. and diverse cultural experiences and life. The outcomes of 'One Book' and TBR cannot be qualitatively measured, but their sustainable value of communication through one selected book has been well proved.

  • Lab-scale trickling bioreactor(TBR) containing the biofilm of Pseudomonas cepacia G4 was developed for the treatment of trichloroethylene(TCE) in a waste gas stream. The effect of phenol feeding on the efficiency of TCE biodegadation in TBR was investigated with the change of inlet phenol concentration from 0 to 4.71 ppm. When 0.94 ppm of phenol was supplied, the best performance of TBR was maintained with the TCE removal efficiency of 58.1%. These results showed that the appropriate supply of phenol could stimulate TCE removal efficiency in TBR.

  • Continuous $H_2$ production from CO and water was studied in a trickle bed reactor(TBR) using Rhodopspedomonas palustris P4. To achieve high cell density, R. palustris P4 were cultivated by a fed-batch culture mode under chemoheterotrophic and aerobic condition, and final cell concentration was 13 g/L. TBR could provide sufficient residence time for CO to contact with cell suspension circulating TBR. The maximum CO uptake rate was found to be 16 mmol/L/hr at gas retention time of 50 min and CO partial pressure of 0.4 atm. In our correlation of the experimental data with mathematical model of TBR, the TBR operation with P4 was found to be lie in an intermediate state between mass transfer limitation and kinetic limitation. Due to the high cell density as well as hydrogen production activity in this study, TBR operation showed a superior performance to other previous reports on microbial hydrogen production.

  • A two-stage continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR)/trickling biofilter reactor (TBR) system was developed for the degradation of gas-phase trichloroethlene (TCE) using Methylosinus trichoporium OB3b. Mrthylosinus trichosporium OB3b was immobilized on activated carbons in TBR and the microbial growth reactor of a CSTR was coupled for the reactivation of the deactivated cells during TCE degradation. The effect of operation variables on TCE conversion and degradation rate were studied. At inlet TCE concentrations ranging from 10 to 80 $\mu$mol/L, TCE degradation rate was increased up to 525 mg TCE/Lㆍday with 75% conversion. The TCE degradation rates were also increased with increse in broth recycle flow rate, gas flow rate and dilution rate. When the temperature of TBR was changed from 3$0^{\circ}C$ to 15$^{\circ}C$, TCE degradation rate and TCE conversion were increased due to the enhanced TCE transfer from gas-phase. The two-stage reactor system was found to be stable and has been operated for more than 270 days.

Methods: 10% TBR extract solution was aqua-punctured into the bilateral loci of Shin-su(BL23), every other day for 18 days, and the amount of leucocytes, erythrocytes, thrombocytes, hematocrit, hemoglobin, serum BUN and creatinine levels were measured and renal mercury level and histopathological findings were studied as well. The experimental groups were into nonmaI group, control group, sample I group, sample II group and sample III group. Results: 1. There were not any significant changes of leucocytes, erythrocytes and serum creatinine level in the TBR aqua-acupuncture group, saline aqua-acupuncture group and TBR aqua-acupuncture group respectively as compared with control group. 2. It showed a significant increase of hematocrit and hemoglobin level in the TBR aqua-acupuncture group on the 8th experimental day as compared with the control group. 3. It showed a significant increase of platelet in the TBR aqua-acupuncture group on the 8th experimental day, whereas significant decreases on the 18th experimental day as compared with the control group. 4. It showed a significant decrease of serum BUN level in the TBR aqua-acupuncture group on the 8th and 18th experimental day as compared with the control group. 5. It showed a significant decrease of renal mercury level in the TBR aqua-acupuncture group on compared with the control group. 6. In the histopathological findings, TBR aqua-acupuncture group showed slight atrophy of the renal tubules, mitosis and regeneration of tubular lining cells with visible nuclei, whereas the control group showed acute tubular necrosis, especially severe necrosis of tubular epithelial cells. Conclusions: Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma aqua-acupuncture on injured kidneys Induced by HgCl2 Intoxication in Rats increases hematocrit, hemoglobin and platelet level, and decreases BUN, renal mercury level. This suggests that Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma aqua-acupuncture helps to recover kidney from HgCl2 intoxication.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of various quantitative indices for the differentiation of benign from malignant primary soft tissue tumors by FDG-PET. A series of 32 patients with a variety of histologically or clinically confirmed benign (20) or malignant (12) soft tissue lesions were evaluated with emission whole body (5min/bed position) PET after injection of [$^{18}F$]FDG. Regional 20min transmission scan for the attenuation correction and calculation of SUV was performed in 16 patients (10 benign, 6malignant) followed by dynamic acquisition for 56min. Postinjection transmission scan for the attenuation correction and calculation of SUV was executed in the other 16 patients (10 benign, 6 malignant). The following indices were obtained. the peak and average SUV (pSUV, aSUV) of lesions, tumor-to-background ratio acquired at images of 51 min p.i. ($TBR_{51}$), tumor-to-background ratio of areas under time-activity curves ($TBR_{area}$) and the ratio between the activities of tumor ROI at 51 min p. i. and at the time which background ROI reaches maximum activity on the time-activity curves ($T_{51}/T_{max}$). The pSUV, aSUV, $TBR_{51}$, and $TBR_{area}$ in malignant lesions were significantly higher than those in benign lesions. We set the cut-off values of pSUV, aSUV, $TBR_{51},\;TBR_{area}$ and $T_{51}/T_{max}$ for the differentiation of benign and malignant lesions at 3.5, 2.8, 5.1, 4.3 and 1.55, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 91.7%, 80.0%, 84.4% by pSUV and aSUV, 83.3%, 85.0%, 84.4% by $TBR_{51}$, 83.3%, 100%, 93.8% by $TBR_{area}$ and 66.7%, 70.0%, 68.8% by $T_{51}/T_{max}$. The time-activity curves did not give additional information compared to SUV or TBR. The one false negative was a case with low-grade fibrosarcoma and all four false positives were cases with inflammatory change on histology. The visual, analysis of FDG-PET also detected the metastatic lesions in malignant cases with comparable accuracy In conclusion, all pSUV, aSUV, $TBR_{51}$, and $TBR_{area}$ are useful metabolic semi-quantitative indices with good accuracy for the differentiation of benign from malignant soft-tissue lesions.

  • A parallel reactor system which is consisted of two trickle bed reactors (TBR) was developed for the biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in waste gas stream. The reactor were packed with porous ceramic materials and Burkholderia cepacia G4 was inoculated to form biofilms. Each reactor was operated alternatively in TCE degradation or reactivation mode, and the effect of switching time on TBR performance was investigated. The MO (monooxygenase) activity during the TCE transformation decreased below 10 % within 24 hr, but could be recovered to the initial high level within 10 hr after supplying the reactivation medium supplemented with phenol as a carbon source. This shows that the parallel TBR system has a great potential for the long-term stable treatment of TCE.
