  • Although the TBM method is mainly adopted in overseas market including the Europe, etc, the method scarcely adopted in domestic market. For highly enhancing applications of the TBM method for railway, It is needed to select the optimal cross-section considering design elements of civil engineering and aerodynamic effects. Also, it is needed to establish plan of proper section as well as reviewing aerodynamic effects and consideration about civil engineering elements such as length of tunnel, speed of railway, height of whole lines and size of utility tunnel, etc. Even though it should be recently considered high-speed railway tunnels and required to be standard establishments in aerodynamic reviews, it is being applied to be criteria of inconsistent pneumatic analysis owing to be not related with domestic standards. In this study, therefore, we are willing to establishment of domestic and foreign aerodynamic standards and investigate correlation between optimal cross-section and aerodynamic effects of TBM railway tunnels.

  • The first TBM introduced in Korea was the gripper TBM, which was applied to the Gudeok Waterway Tunnel in 1985. In the initial stage of the introduction of the gripper TBM, many applications were mainly focused on waterway tunnels (Tunnel Mechanized Construction Design, 2008). Currently, the construction range of gripper TBM in Korea is widely applied to not only waterway tunnels, but also subways, railway tunnels, and TBM+NATM expansion. Overseas, gripper TBM is generally applied, and even when NATM tunnel is applied, it is applied as an exploration tunnel because of the excellent advance rate of gripper TBM and used as an evacuation tunnel after completion. Due to the fast excavation speed, the application of the gripper TBM in the rock section of weathered rock or higher can minimize the environmental and civil complaints caused by creating a large number of work areas when planning long tunnels or mountain tunnels. In this study, the work process of the general gripper TBM was analyzed by analyzing the construction cycle and the gripper TBM with a diameter of 2.6~5.0 m, which was applied the most in Korea. Downtime was investigated and analyzed.

  • The Incheon Metro Line 1 Geomdan Extension Phase 1 is the first project in South Korea where both a roadheader and TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) are being used together. The shield TBM tunnel section is 1,057 m long, and is mostly composed of rock, including the section beneath the Airport Railroad and the Gyeongin Ara Waterway. A 7.8 m earth pressure balance shield TBM was used for tunnel excavation. The average monthly advance rate for both the North and South tracks is 239.1 m, with a maximum monthly advance rate of 334.5 m. This technical article comprehensively evaluates the productivity of the shield TBM, focusing on the TBM excavation performance. Above all, it aims to provide useful reference material for the successful execution of shield TBM tunnel construction.

해외에서는 급속한 시공을 위하여 TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine)의 적용 사례가 증가하고 있다.

  • In this study, we carried out an experimental shield TBM excavation model test using a down-scale device in soft clay, to understand tunnel-face stability properties in relation to changes in slurry pressure. We performed five tests according to tunnel depth (0.5D, 0.75D, 1.0D, 1.25D, 1.5D), and compared theoretical tunnel-face pressure with model test results. The range in theoretical tunnel-face slurry pressure ($P_{min}{\leq}P_{slurry\;pressure}{\leq}P_{max}$), which is determined by earth pressure and water level, was very similar to the model test result. This result was due to the more isotropic condition of the soft clay ground, than of rocky ground.

  • Railway projects have been consistently increasing in Korea. In relation to this trend, the mechanized tunneling using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is preferably applied for mining urban areas and passing under rivers. The TBM tunneling under difficult grounds like mixed faces with high water pressure could require ground improvements for stable TBM advance or safe cutter head intervention (CHI). In this study, pre-grouting works for CHI in Daegok-Sosa railway project are presented in terms of the grouting zone design, the executions and the results, the lessons learned from the experience. It should be mentioned that the grouting from inside TBM was carried out several times and turned out to be inefficient in the project. Therefore, grouting experiences from the surface are highlighted in this study. Jet grouting was implemented on CHI points on land, while permeation grouting off shore in the Han River, which mostly allow to access the cutter head of TBM in free air with stable faces. The results of CHI works have been analyzed and the lesson learned are suggested.

  • When planning gripper TBM, which is highly applicable to urban areas, the excavation characteristics are not considered. In addition the excavation stability and constructability are degraded by installing reinforcements in the adjacent construction site considering the relaxation load theory of the pre-existing NATM. In this study, a rationalization plan for the support was proposed considering the excavation characteristics of gripper TBM when planning reinforcements for adjacent pre-existing construction. The effect of excavation on the surrounding ground was analyzed by conducting three-dimensional stability analyses considering the construction stage for each excavation phase. In NATM, relaxation phenomenon is concentrated in tunnel face due to non-supporting time occurring simultaneously with excavation, but gripper TBM supports the ground around the tunnel face through the cutter head and skin plate, simultaneously causing ground relaxation behind the skin plate. Considering these excavation characteristics, problems in reinforcement planning for adjacent construction at the study site were pointed out. A performance improvement plan for a reasonable supporting system was proposed.
