Glycoprotein from the water extract of dried root barks of slippery Elm was investigated for its anticancer immunostimulating activity, The glycoprotein contained molecular weight 15,000 to 500,000 Da, total carbohydrates 55.8 to 72.1%), total uronic acid 30.0 to 30.5%, and total proteins 5.0 to 6.1%. The anticancer immunostimulating activities were examined for both in vitro bioassays such as immune cell proliferation assay, mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR), direct mitogenicity, T-dependent antibody production, and in vivo bioassays such as septic shock test and anticancer activity test in B16 melanoma transplanted mouse model. In vivo assay, the glycoprotein at the concentration of 3 mg/kg showed the best result that median survival time increased to about 140% in contrast to control groups.

This study conducted infrared (IR) thermography tests using pipe and plate specimens with artificial wall-thinning defects to find an optimal condition for IR thermography test on the wall-thinned nuclear piping components. In the experiment halogen lamp was used to heat the specimens. The distance between the specimen and the lamp and the intensity of halogen lamp were regarded as experimental parameter. When the distance was set to 1~2 m and the lamp intensity was above 60 % of full power, a single scanning of IR thermography detected all artificial wall-thinning defects, whose minimum dimension was $2{\Theta}=90^{\circ}$, d/t=0.5, and $L/D_o=0.25$, within the pipe of 500 mm in length. Regardless of the distance between the specimen and the lamp, the image of wall-thinning defect in IR thermography became distinctive as the intensity of halogen lamp increased. The detectability of IR thermography was similar for both plate and pipe specimens, but the optimal test condition for IR thermography depended on the type of specimen.
Grazer-induced colony formation was examined using a green alga Scenedesmus dimorphus (T$\ddot{u}$rpin) K$\ddot{u}$tzing. Algae were cultured in a medium with or without filtered water taken from cultures of Daphnia magna Straus (300 ind./L) or Moina macrocopa Straus (500 ind./L). The exposure to zooplankton filtered water (ZFW)promoted colony formation in S. dimorphus, with the magnitude of this response being directly proportional to the relative volume of ZFW that was added to the culture medium. The number of cells/colony and mean particle biovolume of S. dimorphus increased between 24 and 72 hours after exposure to ZFW, most likely due to the influence of chemicals released from D. magna or M. macrocopa, and possily as a defense mechanism against zooplankton grazing.
Objective : To study effects of Astragali radix on relieving neutropenia caused by cyclophosphamide. Method : We administered Astragali radixextracts for 7 days before injecting cyclophosphamide 200mg/kg to mice subcutaneously to cause neutropenia. The control group wasn't administered Astragali radix. One test group was administered Astragali radix extracts 500mg/kg and the other was administered 1000mg/kg. We observed WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, RBC, GOT, GPT, BUN, and creatine. Result : WBC, RBC, lymphocyte, neutrophil, and platelet improved more in mice administered Astragali radix extracts. Moreover, the 1000mg/kg group was more affected than the 500mg/kg group generally. GOT, GPT, BUN, and creatine weren't changed significantly compared with the control group. Conclusion : It is shown that Astragali radix extracts can relieve neutropenia induced by cyclophosphamide and we conclude that Astragali radix will be useful for cancer treatment.
Phthalate esters have possible effects on the endocrine system. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the most commonly wed phthalic acid esters (PAEs). It is extensively wed as a plasticizer in elastomers, as a solvent for printing inks and resins, and as a textile lubricating agent. It is also present in the formulations of various cosmetic products. DBP has been identified as a reproductive toxicant in several animal species and also know as a endocrine disruptor. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of DBP on developmental immune Junction wing rat pups as experimental animals. Timed-bred pregnant SD rats were orally dosed with 0, 250, 500, or 750 mg DBP/kg body weight once a day from gestational day (GD) 5 to 18 and postpartum day (PD) 3 to 18. On PD22, the dams and their pups were euthanized and examined for alteration in parameters associated to immune function. The results showed no significant changes in body weight, thymus weight, thymus and spleen cellularities, the polyclonal activation respones of splenocyte with ConA and LPS, and also the distribution of arterial blood cells and thymocyto subsets in both rat dam and pups. However DBP exposure on rat dam resulted in increases of liver weights of dam and their pups except 750 mg DBP/kg, and body and spleen weights in pups except 750 mg DBP/kg. On the other hands, distribution rates of CD8+ T cells at 500 mg DBP/kg and B cells at 750 mg DBP/kg among splenocyte subsets were significantly increased in rat pups, unlike dams. Reasons of these distribution alterations of CD8+ T cells and B cells in rat pups are under study.

The slope gradient of the Korean Peninsula was analyzed by using DEM(DTED level 1). The Peninsula has high percentages of gentle slopes. But low plains and very steep slope regions are scarcely distributed in the Peninsula. Altitude lower than 150m areas are composed of plains and undulated plains. The steepest and most rugged topographies are observed in the range of altitude from 500m to 1,000m areas. The areas of altitude greater than 1,000m show plateau landscapes. By overlapping digital geology maps and the gradient grade maps, We revealed the characteristics of slope regions by geological districts. High latitude with steep slope are well developed in the geological districts of granitic gneiss(ARgr) and gneiss($PR_1$) of the Pre-Cambrian, sandstone of the Paleozoic era(P-T), and sedimentary rocks of the Mesozoic era($J_2$). Low altitude with gentle slope areas are representative in the districts of granite of the Mesozoic era($Jgr_1$), the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Mesozoic era($K_1$, $K_2$) and the Cenozoic strata(N). Basalt extruded the Quaternary($Q_1$) are observed in the areas of very gentle slope but greater than 1,000m altitude.
In order to investigate the anticancer activity of an anti-yeast substance (AYS), a proteoglycan produced by Rhanella aquatilis AY2000, the cytotoxicity of the AYS against cancer cells was determined in vitro. The AYS was not cytotoxic to the human Jurkat T cell or the mouse sarcoma 180 cell, but was cytotoxic to the human colon cancer TH20 cell. The AYS was increasingly cytotoxic against human colon cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner at range from 62.5 to 500 ${\mu}g/ml$. Anticancer activity by combination of the AYS and an anticancer agent was also determined. The anticancer agent combined with the AYS was shown to possess greater synergistic anticancer activity against human colon cancer cells, as compared with the anticancer agent alone.

Construction of an artificial wetland for the growth of Sphagnum palustre with emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, and Zizania latifolia) was firstly tried and the growth of those plant components according to various environmental combinations has been monitored for three years. Above-ground dry weight of Z. latifolia ($1,500g/m^2$) was higher than T. angustifolia ($900g/m^2$) and P. australis ($500g/m^2$) under most environmental conditions. In overall, planted emergent macrophytes seemed to prefer polishing sand without moss peat as a substrate and relatively deep water-depth condition (20cm) rather than shallow water-depth (5cm). Despite of high calcium content in inflow water (> 15ppm) into the constructed wetland, S. palustre populations have survived in most experimental plots during the monitoring period. Substrate layer including moss peat with high surface-area might play a role as an ion-filter. After three years, relatively thicker litter-layer in Z. latifolia plots due to vigorous growth appeared to heavily depress S. palustre by physical compressing and complete shading processes. Most of all, for the continuous growth of S. palustre, physio-chemical characteristics of water and substrate must be carefully managed. In addition, companion emergent species should be also cautiously selected not to depress S. palustre by much litter production. We suggest P. australis and T. angustifolia as companion species rather than Z. latifolia.
Isolates of the different species groups of Trichoderma from the mushroom culture beds were identified according to Rifai's classification and influence of antibiotics produced by them against the oyster mushroom was examined. Trichoderma islolates were identified as Trichoderma hamatum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma koningii. Among the Trichoderma isolates, fungistatic action of Trichoderma viride was found to be most remarkable. Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus sajor-caju were the most susceptable of the edible mushrooms tested, followed by Lentinus edodes, Flammulina velutipes and Auricularia auricula. A needle-shaped crystal gained from the chloroform extract of the culture filtrate of Trichoderma viride repressed distinctively the mycelial growth of the oyster mushroom. The grade of repression of the crystal at 500ppm and 1/10 aequous solution of the chloroform extract against the oyster mushroom, seemed equal to that of cycloheximide at $100{\sim}200ppm$.

Although the multi-scale map database should be constructed for the web map services and location-based services, much part of generation process is based on the manual editing. In this study, the map generalization methodology for automatic construction of multi-scale database from the primary data is proposed. Moreover, the generalization methodology is applied to the real map data and the prototype of multi-scale map dataset is generated. Among the generalization operators, selection/elimination, simplification and amalgamation/aggregation is applied in organized manner. The algorithm and parameters for generalization is determined experimentally considering T$\ddot{o}$pfer's radical law, minimum drawable object of map and visual aspect. The target scale level is five(1:1,000, 1:5,000, 1:25,000, 1:100,000, 1:500,000) and for the target data, new address data and digital topographic map is used.
