Microstructure of glass-ceramics obtained by heat treating silicate glass containing 50 wt% electric arc furnace dust (EAF dust) and nucleation agents were observed. The crystallization temperature, $T_c$ of glassy specimen measured around $850^{\circ}C$ from different thermal analysis, so the heat treatment condition to obtain glass-ceramic specimen was selected as $950^{\circ}C/15 hr$. The nucleation agent, $TiO_2$ showed the superior effect on enhancing franklinite crystal growth which has stronger mechanical properties and more durable chemical resistance than willemite phase. Some specimens containing $TiO_2$ had the augite crystal phase and increasing $TiO_2$ amount decreased a fraction of willemite and increased a franklinite. Especially, the specimen with 5 wt% $TiO_2$ showed no willemite crystal phase and $1{\sim}2\;{\mu}m$ franklinite crystals dispersed uniformly in glassy matrix. Also, the specimens containing 5 wt% $TiO_2$ mixed with $Fe_2O_3$ showed a dendrite-shaped franklinite crystals caused by coalescence of small crystallites.
Activated carbon fibers were prepared from stabilized PAN fibers by physical and chemical activation to compare their characteristics. In this study, stabilized PAN fibers were activated by physical activation with steam and CO$_2$, and by chemical activation with KOH. The fabricated activated carbon fibers were evaluated and compared such as specific surface area, pore size distribution, pore volume, and amount of iodine adsorption. In the steam activation, a specific surface area of 1635 m$^2$/g was obtained after heat treatment at 990$^{\circ}C$. Otherwise, in the CO$_2$ activation, produced activated carbon fibers had been a specific surface area of 671 m$^2$/g after heat treatment at 990$^{\circ}C$. In chemical activation using KOH, a specific surface area of 3179 m$^2$/g was obtained with a KOH/ stabilized PAN fiber ratio of 1.5 : 1 at 900$^{\circ}C$. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms for fabricated activated carbon fibers showed type I and transformation from type I and II in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (B.D.D.T) classification. Increasing specific surface area Increased the amount of iodine adsorption in both activation methods. Because the ionic radius of iodine was smaller than the interior micropore size of activated carbon fibers.

High strength and fracture toughness of Al-Li-Cu alloy(2090 Al alloy) have been achieved by the improvement of melting and casting, extrusion and heat treatment techniques. To establish the sucessful process for semi-industrial scale ingot(20Kg) the following areas have been investigated: (1) Improvement of melting and casting techniques for ingot by introducing atmospheric modifications, vacuum and rotary degassing, and deslagging. (2) The effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties (3) Mechanical characterization by tensile test, fracture toughness test and fatigue crack propagation test. High mechanical properties were found to be intimately related with ingot soundness. Tensile strength of final products varied from 534MPa to 566MPa in peak aged condition while elongation/ductility ranged from 9.0% to 11.9%. From the fracture toughness test with using compact tensile specimen, plane strain fracture toughness($K_{Ic}$) appeared to be 39MPa${\surd}$m in peak aged condition and 23MPa${\surd}$ m in underaged condition. When load ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 were given ${\Delta}K_{th}$ was 6.0MPa${\surd}$ m, 5.3MPa${\surd}$ m and 4.3MPa${\surd}$ m respectively.

This study has been performed to investigate the effect of Al addition on High Temperature Gas Nitriding (HTGN) in 13%Cr-0.16%C stainless steel with different Al contents of 0.54%, 1.76% and 2.36%, respectively. HTGN treatment was carried out at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, 5 hrs and 10 hrs. Nitrogen-permeated surface layers showed round type carbides of $Cr_{23}C_6$ and needle type nitrides of AlN in the matrix of martensite, representing 600~700 Hv. And the thickness of the surface layer increased with increasing Al content and HTGN treatment time. The inner region that was not permeated nitrogen showed chromium carbides in the mixed phase of martensite and ferrite for the 0.53% Al alloyed steel, however chromium carbides in the matrix of ferrite single phase were shown for the steels with the addition of 1.76%Al and 2.36%Al, representing the hardness of ~200 Hv. During nitrogen permeation from surface to the interior, substitutional elements of Cr, Al and Si moved toward the surface and interstitial element of carbon also moved from interior to the surface. This movement of alloying elements leads high concentration of these elements at the outmost surface, subsequently the lowest peak of substitutional elements were shown in the vicinity of near surface. After showing the lowest peak, the high concentration region of Al and C were formed due to the continuous movement of Al toward the surface. The long discontinuous precipitates of $Cr_{23}C_6$ and AlN were formed along the outmost surface owing to the high concentration of these alloying elements.

Sources of energy and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) have been used to meet nutrient requirements for high producing dairy cows. However studies for manipulation the levels of energy and RUP in diets have been mainly achieved using dairy cows at early-lactation period. The objective of this study thus, was to investigate the effects of different energy and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) levels on dry matter intake and milk yield in Holstein cows at mid-lactation period. Basal diet was prepared as TMR to meet nutrient requirements for dairy cows at mid-lactation according to NRC recommendation. Cows of control group (Con) were fed only basal diets while ground corn (0.5 kg/d), heat-treated soybean meal (0.5 kg/d), and their mixture (0.25 kg of each supplements/d) were added to diets for cows of treatment groups (T1, T2, and T3 respectively) to modulate the level of energy and RUP contents in diets. Addition of energy or RUP source in basal TMR did not affect in total DMI while TMR intake tended to be higher in Con compared to T3. Cows fed T3 diets tended to show increased milk yield and MUN content than those of Con. Cows for T2 as well as T3 had lower ADG (P<0.05) compared with those of Con. We concluded that the addition of RUP source in diets for dairy cows on mid-lactation period might cause the decrement of DMI and ADG.
Precursor gels with the composition of $xZrO_2{\cdot}(100-x)SiO_2$ systems (x=10, 20 and 30 mol%) were prepared by the sol-gel method. Kinetic parameters, such as activation energy, Avrami's exponent, n, and dimensionality crystal growth value, m, have been simultaneously calculated from the DTA data using Kissinger and Matusita equations. The crystallite size dependence on tetragonal to monoclinic transformation of $ZrO_2$ was investigated using XRD, in relation to the fracture toughness. The crystallization of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ occurred through 3-dimensional diffusion controlled growth(n=m=2) and the activation energy for crystallization was calculated using Kissinger and Matusita equations, as about $310{\sim}325{\pm}10kJ/mol$. The growth of $t-ZrO_2$, in proportion to the cube of radius, increased with increasing heating temperature and heat-treatment time. It was suggested that the diffusion of Zr4+ions by Ostwald ripening was rate-limiting process for the growth of $t-ZrO_2$ crystallite size. The fracture toughness of $xZrO_2{\cdot}(100-x)SiO_2$ systems glass ceramics increased with increasing crystallite size of $t-ZrO_2$. The fracture toughness of $30ZrO_2{\cdot}70SiO_2$ system glass ceramics heated at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 5 h was $4.84Mpam^{1/2}$ at a critical crystaliite size of 40 nm.
Sarcoplasmic reticulum subfractions were isolated from rabbit sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles using ultracentrifugation in a continuous sucrose gradient (12.5% 50%) after French pressure treatment. And proteins in sarcoplasmic reticulum were detected by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and glycoproteins were identified through the reaction with 1251-concanavalin A.The electrophoresis showed that sarcoplasmic reticulum contained predominantly $Ca^2$+-AThase and calsequestrin along with high affinity calcium binding protein, intrinsic glycoprotein 160 Kd, 94 Kd, 80 Kd, 38 Kd, 34 Kd and 24 Kd proteins. Among these, the protein of about 80 Kd which has been known as one of heat shock proteins was especially enriched in the terminal cistemae of sarcoplasmic reticulum. Meanwhile, autoradiogram of 125 I-concanavalin A bound to the stained gels showed the distribution of glycoproteins which included 160 Kd glycoprotein, 94 Kd glycoprotein, calsequestrin and intrinsic glycoprotein Among these, the protein of about 160 Kd was especially enriched in longitudial sarcoplasmic reticulum and T-tubule, and the protein of about 94 Kd which has been known as one of glucose-regulated proteins was also enriched in T-tubule and sharply reduced in terminal cistemae.

Hierarchically porous carbon materials with high nitrogen functionalities are extensively studied as high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbon textile (N-PCT) with hierarchical pore structures is prepared as an electrode material for supercapacitors from a waste cotton T-shirt (WCT). Porous carbon textile (PCT) is first prepared from WCT by two-step heat treatment of stabilization and carbonization. The PCT is then nitrogen-doped with urea at various concentrations. The obtained N-PCT is found to have multi-modal pore structures with a high specific surface area of 1,299 m2 g-1 and large total pore volume of 1.01 cm3 g-1. The N-PCT-based electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance in a 3-electrode system, such as a specific capacitance of 235 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, excellent cycling stability of 100 % at 5 A g-1 after 1,000 cycles, and a power density of 2,500 W kg-1 at an energy density of 3.593 Wh kg-1. Thus, the prepared N-PCT can be used as an electrode material for supercapacitors.
This study analyzed the qualitative characteristics and antioxidant effect of Artemisia by experimenting its medicinal effect and functionality. Moisture content increased in proportion to heating time and decreased in reverse proportion to temperature and time. In the contents of mineral compounds, P was shown in the order of roasting temperature $230^{\circ}C$ > $80^{\circ}C$ > $110^{\circ}C$, and blanching condition was 0.50% in one and two minute treatment and 0.38% in five minute treatment. The contents of Ca didn't have significant differences according to the types of treatment. The contents of Fe were higher than general vegetables with 0.54~1.02 mg/100 g. The contents of phenolic compounds were highest in the control plot, followed by one minute blanching and roasting at $110^{\circ}C$ was the lowest. The intensity of electron donating ability was decreased in 14 minute blanching at $230^{\circ}C$. Based on the result of the study, roasting at low temperature and blanching which is Korean traditional method are desirable when cooking with Artemisia.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the microstructural changes in alloy ribbons of Al-Fe-Mo-Si quarternary system at $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, and to study the coarsening mechanism of fine precipitates. Using the hot stage in TEM, in situ microstructural changes in Al-4Fe-0.5Mo-1.5Si alloy ribbon and Al-8Fe-2Mo-1.5Si alloy ribbon have been examined successively up to 60 hours at $450^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. Cell structure in zone B of Al-4Fe-0.5Mo-1.5Si alloy ribbon was observed to collapse even in 10 minutes by in-situ heating at $450^{\circ}C$ and the size of precipitates in zone B increased twice in 60 hours. The precipitates in zone A of Al-4Fe-0.5Mo-1.5Si alloy ribbon showed slower coarsening rate than those in zone B by in-situ heating at $450^{\circ}C$. The precipitates in zone A of Al-8Fe-2Mo-1.5Si alloy ribbon increased 50% by in-situ heating at $500^{\circ}C$ in 50 hours compared to the initial precipitates while any microstructual change in zone B was not observed by in-situ heating at $500^{\circ}C$ up to 50 hours. Only the precipitates in zone A of Al-4Fe-0.5Mo-1.5Si alloy ribbon satisfied $r^3{\propto}t$ relationship of coarsening mechanism.
