  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of dietary germanium supplementation on the meat quality of duck. Ducks raised for 42 days were slaughtered and the ground meats were stored at 3$^{\circ}C$ for 12 days under 1200 lux. Experimental treatments were divided into 3 kinds of meat from ducks fed germanium as follows; 1) Control(natural water + commercial feed), 2) T1(1~10 days: natural water + commercial feed, 11-42 days: natural water + commercial feed supplemented with 1 % germanium), 3) T2(1~10 days: germanium submersion water + commercial feed, 11~42 days: natural water + commercial feed supplemented with 1 % germanium). The pH of duck meat was not different among the treatments(p>0.05). The germanium treatments exhibited significantly higher crude fat content in both breast and thigh meat(p<0.05). In the fatty acid composition, T2 contained more unsaturated fatty acid than control or Tl. TPA(textural profile analysis) value such as hardness, gumminess, chewiness and adhesiveness decreased in meat from duck fed supplemental germanium. Cholesterol contents of duck meat decreased in dietary supplemental germanium treatment compared to control, but were not significantly different among them(p>0.05). Dietary germanium supplementation affected on lipid oxidation of meat during storage. TBARS of meat from duck fed germanium was lower than that of control(po.05). The CIE L*, b* and h$\^$0/ values of germanium treatments were significantly(p.o5) higher than those of control. Also a* value showed more stable in germanium diet treatment during storage. Therefore, dietary supplemental germanium to duck resulted in light brownish color formation, improvement tenderness and retardation of lipid oxidation of meat during refrigerated storage.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of corn silage and roughage feeding systems on milk yield and milk compositions. The experimental design was allotted into 3 treatments according to the feeding systems of rice straw(rice straw+concentrate: T1), corn silage(corn silage + concentrate: T2) and TMR treatment(Total mixed rate : roughage + concentrate: T3). This research was carried out from Oct. 1988 to Mar. 1999 at Kimcheon Kyungbook. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The milk yield increased upon T2(31.9$\pm$3.2kg) > T3(29.6$\pm$3.8kg) > T1 treatment(22.5$\pm$2.0kg)(P<0.05), but cows with T2 and T3 produced the highest at third parity while T1 at forth parity. 2. The milk fat percentage was the highest at T3 treatment(3.79$\pm$0.31%), and on the other hand T1 treatment appeared the lowest percentage. Cow at 2nd parity produced the highest milk fat contend over the other parity. 3. There was no significant difference in protein content between treatments and parity, but T2 and T3 were higher than T1 4. Treatment did not affact content of SNF even though T2 and T3 of the SNF revealed to higher than T1. T5 was T3(12.51$\pm$0.57%)>T1(11.71$\pm$0.62%)>T2 treatment(11.52$\pm$0.55%). These were not significant. 5. Somatic cell counts were the highest at T1(39.6 ${\times}$ $10^4$cell/ml), but T2 treatment was the lowest as 28.7 ${\times}$ $10^4$ cell/ml. These results indicates that com silage(T2) and TMR treatment(T3) could be recommended

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary addition of herbal probiotics on the Hanwoo steers' physiochemical property. A total of 50 Hanwoo steers (5 treatment groups${\times}$10 heads) were used. The crude fat content of beef has been found significant high in T2 and T3 group, and the Con 2 group had the highest heating loss (p<0.05). The water-holding capacity ranged from 56.73% through 60.16%, and the treatment group was generally higher than the control group. In particular, the T3 group showed significantly high water-holding capacity (p<0.05). The cholesterol content ranged from 41.64mg/100g through 47.33mg/100g. In the overall and the Con 2 group had significantly high cholesterol content (p<0.05). Furthermore, the oleic acid and MUFA had significant high T2 and T3 group in the fatty acid composition (p<0.05), but the amino acid content made no difference between the treatment groups.

  • Three haptophyte algae, Isochrysis galbana, Prymnesium parvum and P. patelliferum were offered to the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus as food. Growth rate of larvae, egg production, mortality and comsumption rates of T. japonicus were measured for each of the haptophyte species offered. The growth rate of larvae, egg production and algal ingestion of T. japonicus fed on P. parvum and P. patelliferum were much lower than those fed on I. galbana and corresponding high mortality rates were also observed during the experimental period. The harmful effects observed during the present study indicate that bloom-forming haptophyte algae, P. parvum and P. patelliferum are not suitable feed species for culture of copepod, T. japonicus.

  • The effects of different mineral supplementations on the milk yield of free-ranging Somali camels were investigated in two phases in a semi-arid region of northern Kenya during the dry and wet seasons in 2002 and 2003. In phase 1, twelve (12) lactating camels were selected at random to form four (4) groups each consisting of three camels. The first group served as the control and as a result received no mineral supplementation. In addition to the control diet the other groups received oral doses of minerals as follows over a 60-day period: T1 (P), T2 (High Cu low Co) and T3 (Low Cu high Co). The daily milk yield and blood mineral profiles were measured during the wet and dry seasons. The mean daily milk yield increased from 3.4 L/d to $4.3{\pm}0.3L/d$ and 5.2 L/d in the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Fifteen (15) lactating camels were selected at random to form five groups each consisting of three replicates. The control group did not receive any mineral supplement. The other four groups in addition to the control diet, received the following treatments: T4 (Common Salt), T5 (High Co), T6 (High Co+P) and T7 (Low Co+P). Mineral supplement T6 produced significantly higher milk yield ($5.4{\pm}0.5$ and $6.5{\pm}0.7L/d$) during the dry and wet seasons. Both T6 and T7 had significantly higher milk yield than T4 and T5. During both phases, the blood Ca and P level significantly increased in camels receiving T1, 6 and 7. Animals that received only the trace mineral supplements had lower blood P compared to the ones receiving supplementary P and also the control. Supplementation of lactating camels with Co and P significantly (p<0.05) increased milk yield). Effect of common salt, commonly given by farmers, on milk yield was insignificant. It was concluded that mineral supplementation to lactating camels was beneficial, and that mineral supplements should include P and Co. Further research is required to establish P and Co requirements of lactating camels.

  • Fifteen cases of Korean hemorrhagic fever who were admitted Chungnam National University Hospital from October 1981 to December 1981 were analysed on the evaluation of metabolic.changes of the thyroid hormones, and thyroid function status in each clinical phase. 1. Serum $T_3,\;T_4$ concentratron, $FT_4I\;and\;T_4/TBG$ ratio were significantly lower (p<0.001, p<0.005, p<0.005, p<0.001, respectively) than control group in oliguric and early diuretic phase of Korean hemorrhagic fever. With the recovery of illness, abnormal thyroid hormones and thyroid function indices tend to become normal range. But Serum $FT_4$, TSH and TBG concentration were within normal range in all phase of KHF. Thus in Korean hemorrhagic fever, euthyroidism is probably maintained by normal or elevated serum $FT_4$ 2. $T_4/T_3\;and\;rT_3/T_3$ rato (p<0.005, p<0.005) were increased in oliguric and early diuretic phase of KHF. These results might be explained by decreased peripheral conversion of $T_4\;to\;T_3$ in oliguric and early diuretic phase.

  • This study was to investigated the effects of adding of medicinal herbal (cinnamon, licorice and Bokbunja) to ground beef during storage by examining surface color, water holding capacity, cooking loss, increased rate of thickness, decreased rate of diameter, pH, VBN (volatile basic nitrogen) content and TBARS (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) values of the beef under cold ($4{\pm}1$) storage conditions for 9 days. Four types of ground beef were prepared by adding the follow: 10% water (control), 10% cinnamon extracts (T-1), 10% licorice extracts (T-2), and 10% Bokbunja extracts (T-3). The $L^*$ (Lightness) and $a^*$ (Redness) values of the beef significantly decreased (p<0.05) whereas no significant changes were shown in the $b^*$ (Yellowness) value during storage, and which were not influenced by the additions of herbal extracts. Water holding capacity was significantly increased during cold storage (p<0.05), and was not influenced by the addition of the extracts. The cooking loss of the control, T-2 and T-3 were significantly decreased during cold storage (p<0.05), and T-1 had no significant changes in cooking loss. There were no significant changes in the thickness and diameter during cold storage, and which were not influenced by the addition of the extracts. The pH of the control decreased until 6 days of storage, but increased at 9 days, and the pH levels of T-1, T-2 and T-3 decreased during cold storage. VBN content was increased during cold storage and the VBN contents of the samples containing herbal extracts were lower than that of the control. In addition, the TBARS values of the ground beef containing the extracts were lower than that of the control.

  • Geriatric illness is increasing with aged population ratio due to a prolonged average life span. Research studies with therapeutic approach using oriental herbs have been attempted, but the very few studies of oriental herbal tea as a healthy drink have done as a health care. This study was performed to identify the effects of oriental herbal tea on the physiological function and behavioral change of elders at geriatric facility. A quasi-experimental design using a nonequivalent control group, pre-post test was used. Total 38 of elderly population (20 of experimental group and 18 of control group) was recruited. 100mL of a type of oriental herbal tea developed for this study was given to each subject 3 times a day for 30 days (from May to June 2013). The health scan analyzer and questionnaire for behavioral change were used to measure dependent variables. The data was analyzed by SPSS/WIN 18.0. After drinking the oriental herbal tea, more significant improvement on blood circulation (t=-4.466, p<.001), liver function (t=-2.855, p=.007), brain function (t=-2.545, p=.015), bone density (t=-6.125, p<.001), blood sugar (t=-4.180, p=<.001) and emotional factor (t=2.389, p=.023) as the sub-variable of behavioral change were found in the experimental group than control group. This study shows that oriental herbal tea can be effective on the physiological function and emotional relief of the elders. Therefore the tea can be utilized as an effective intervention for the health of elders in geriatric facility.
